Abstract: Social networking sites and online communities are used by billions of people globally. It is important to understand the participation in these collaborative platforms and the roles different participants play. In this study, we examine the roles both local and global opinion leaders play and their influence on the community using content related to Covid mental health from Reddit. We employed social network analysis to identify opinion leaders based on their network position and connections, and we used sentiment analysis and econometric models to examine their impact on online health community participation. Our study reveals that global opinion leaders have more influence on thread participation than local opinion leaders. In addition, negative emotions expressed encourage more participants' involvement in online health community discussion. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations today need internal reporting channels to report illegal/unethical misconduct. For this purpose, organizations set up one or more - often digital - internal reporting channels. Persons/Employees who want to report misconduct, so-called whistleblowers, expose themselves to reprisals and therefore need trustworthy reporting channels which ensure ´Digital Trust´. Blockchain, a technology that overcomes the need for trust due to its properties of immutability and integrity of data, could be promising as underlying technology for a digital reporting channel which is recognized as trustworthy. In our research, we explored multiple perspectives relevant to a trustworthy digital reporting system. Applying design science research, we evaluated the current state of the art of (digital) reporting channels and developed a prototypical blockchain-based reporting solution called “Integrity@Inside”. Abstract: Digitalization is rapidly changing markets and workplaces with digital technologies intrinsically embedded in organizational processes. Inherent complexities in digital technologies require organizations and individuals to adjust and adapt to technologies and work practices to meet organizational goals. Adaptations enable continued use, avoiding IS non-adoption, but can be detrimental to efficiency and performance. The double-sided nature of adaptations motivates this research to examine the emergence of adaptations in digitized care processes in Telemedicine. Digital technologies are increasingly used in Telemedicine, blurring spatial and temporal boundaries of care and interactions. Adaptive Structuration Theory is used to analyze the adaptation mechanisms and the triggers for adaptations. A qualitative field study is conducted in two public hospitals in India. Findings show that users adapt technology, tasks, and roles and enact role multiplexities, resulting in new structures. The study contributes to the literature on changing work practices in Telemedicine that alter spatial organization of care and interactions. Collapse

Abstract: We use the lens of the intrinsic/extrinsic motivation theory to holistically model the effects of intangible awards on member contribution in virtual communities. Using multiple studies on Yelp, we validate that the influence of award stimuli on contribution outcomes become significantly moderated by the aspect of contribution (quantity versus quality) and the novelty of stimuli (time and repetition of awards) to interestingly form divergent (downward versus upward) yet theoretically explicable curvilinear trajectories of contribution. This study contributes to IS literature on virtual communities and social-cognitive literature on work motivation and offers insights to community managers to design better incentive systems. Abstract: eHealth research has been marked by the last two decades of scholarship spurred by technological advances and the potential of health promotion and behavior change.The study examined the state of eHealth scholarship across social, behavioral and information technologies through a systematic, machine-based learning approach of the last 19 years across 811 articles. The study analyzes topics that were published using latent Dirichlet allocation of studies from 2002 to 2021; it also raises ethical challenges for researchers related to those in prior health initiatives by the CDC and in current scholarship. Results show the common topics, terms, and linguistic attributes within the state of eHealth scholarship and disparities in other areas based on topics published. Suggestions are offered for interdisciplinary collaboration to facilitate the growth and the optimal, practical use of eHealth and directions for the future. Collapse

Abstract: Online health communities (OHCs) represent a popular and valuable resource for those seeking health information, support, or advice. They have the potential to reduce dependency on traditional health information channels, increase health literacy and empower a broader range of individuals in relation to their health management decisions. Successful communities are characterized by high levels of trust in user-generated contributions, which is reflected in increased engagement and expressed through knowledge adoption and knowledge contribution. However, research shows that the majority of OHCs are composed of passive participants who do not contribute via posts, thereby threatening the sustainability of many communities and their potential for empowerment. Despite this fact, the relationship between trust and engagement, specifically the trust antecedents that influence engagement in the OHC community context has not been adequately explained in past research. In this study, we leverage social capital behavior and social exchange theory frameworks in order to provide a more granular trust-based elucidation of the factors that influence individuals’ engagement in OHCs. We collected data from 410 Brazilian participants of Facebook OHCs and tested the research model using partial least squares. The results confirm two new constructs—online community responsiveness and community support—as trust antecedents that influence engagement in OHCs, resulting in knowledge adoption and knowledge contribution responses. These findings contribute to the trust and engagement literatures and to social media research knowledge. From a practitioner perspective, the study findings can serve as an important guide for moderators and managers seeking to develop trusted and impactful OHCs. Collapse

Abstract: ChatGPT' indicates approximately 416 million hits, while Google Scholar suggests 4710 articles, a number that is likely to rise fast. Generative AI is clearly here to stay, though there are already calls to curtail its use and some countries appear to be banning it. Interestingly, we already see the roll-out of generative AI detection software with tools like GPTZero. The plagiarism detection tool, iThenticate, is likely to follow up and embed generative AI detection as well. In order to reflect on this rapidly developing phenomenon, we conducted a sentiment and topic analysis of Twitter tweets about ChatGPT in academia. We analysed 12 400 tweets over a 3-month period from late 2022 to early 2023. 3680 tweets display a positive sentiment, 2612 display a negative one and 6109 display a neutral view. This pattern already exhibits a shift from the earlier reactions which were predominantly negative. Nevertheless, the topics discussed in these tweets are similar and can be subsumed within two major streams: research and publication. | WHY DOES IT MATTER TO ISJ READERS?Our focus in this editorial is on the practicalities of applying generative AI in the academic research community. The stakeholders of relevance here are authors, reviewers, editors and readers (scholars and practitioners) of ISJ, and also its publisher. All of these stakeholders have a commitment to and interest in the undertaking and publishing of academic research. Indeed, research and publication are the twin pillars on which a scholarly journal stands. Emerging articles comment on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of generative AI in the context of research (see for instance Dwivedi et al., 2023, for an extensive account). In academia, there is an ongoing debate on the various implications that the technology may have. | WHY IS GENERATIVE AI RELEVANT TO RESEARCH?The title of this editorial, viz.: "pickled eggs", should have given some pause for thought. As it happened the collaborators of one of the co-authors of this editorial used a generative AI assistant (Microsoft Office 365's transcription function) to convert an audio file (of an interview with a research subject) to text. In that interview, reference was made to "pico-x", the name of a software. The generative AI assistant duly rendered this as "pickled eggs", presumably the closest term in its vocabulary. Reading through the transcript, numerous errors appeared: personal, product or place names were routinely misspelled, but so too were more mundane expressions. Similar errors occurred in Chinese where an interviewee used the English letters EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) in the middle of what was otherwise a Chinese sentence. The generative AI assistant, which was set up to transcribe Chinese audio to Chinese text, correctly transcribed all the Chinese words into characters, but made an error with EDI, which it also converted Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates the design considerations for health information technologies (HITs) that are aimed at supporting lower socioeconomic status (SES) individuals in addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) needs. While emerging technologies offer new opportunities for improving quality of life outcomes, many lower SES individuals may be novice users of digital health technologies, including SDOH technologies. To address this gap, we conducted qualitative research using user-centered design tools during the development of an app designed to help individuals address SDOH needs. Our findings provide insight into the unique characteristics, needs, and preferences of lower SES digital novices, and highlight multiple aspects of their eHealth literacy. We discuss the implications of these findings for designing and implementing HITs for novice users. Collapse

Abstract: Online forums sponsored by Electronic Networks of Practice are commonly used to exchange information related to problem solving, but the quality of solutions posted on forums can vary widely. To assist knowledge seekers, most forums offer contextual cues that signal solution quality, such as endorsements by the question poster, experts, or other community members. However, the influence of these cues on information-filtering decisions, particularly when presented simultaneously, remains poorly understood. This study draws on signaling theory to develop hypotheses about how four cue dimensions-source, valence, format, and volume-shape information filtering on an online forum. Results from three choice-based conjoint studies show that some sources are more influential than others and that positive cues weigh more heavily on filtering decisions than negative cues. Results also show that cues tend to be more influential when they employ a more granular format and reflect the input of a larger number of individuals. Collapse
