Abstract: Recent successful cybersecurity attacks have exploited trust to compromise organizational information systems. Scholars and practitioners agree that the issue originates from the organizational perimeter security approach, within which perimeter trust is assumed. To improve the situation, building security principles on the idea that trust is not inherent but earned has been proposed, coined as Zero Trust. However, the current discussions spearheaded by technology-minded practitioners have focused mostly on trust at the network security and architecture levels, largely omitting the organizational aspects of security. To address this gap, we build on socio-technical approach and maturity models to develop a novel artifact with security experts, addressing the need for organizational Zero Trust through the Extended Zero Trust Maturity Model. Our research contributes to discussions on holistic information security management by extending the principles of Zero Trust from technical into socio-technical approach and responds to calls to reconsider foundational assumptions of IS security. Abstract: Performance impacts of investments in information technologies (ITs) are difficult to evaluate. External investors are further constrained by their lack of visibility into the firm’s intangible, complementary actions and capabilities, creating an information asymmetry between them and the firm’s executives. Building on signaling theory and the research on senior executives’ trades in a firm’s stock, this paper addresses the following question: How are the stock trades by a firm’s senior executives before a major IT investment by the firm associated with the future value to the firm from that IT investment? The results based on data on 2,898 publicly announced IT investments from 926 firms during 2002–2016 suggest that (1) the purchasing of a firm’s stock by its senior executives before a firm’s IT investment is associated with the investment’s longterm effect on firm value; (2) such stock purchases by a firm’s senior executives are associated with a stronger positive (negative) relationship between the IT’s newness and the long-term abnormal returns to firms emphasizing a revenue enhancement (cost reduction) IT strategy; (3) for firms pursuing a hybrid strategy, purchases by CIOs but not purchases by CEOs or the newness of IT are associated with firm value, and (4) purchases made by CIOs provide greater information about the IT investment’s impact on firm value than purchases made by CEOs. We further improve our predictive model’s accuracy from 75% for a model including the fit between IT newness and IT strategy to 80% and 91% when considering purchases by CEOs or CIOs, respectively, and 92% when considering purchases by both executives. Abstract: There have been significant changes in how human resources (HR) are managed in the last decade. Electronic Human Resource Management (e-HRM) systems are implemented to support the HR organization digitally. However, eHRM projects fail frequently. This requires attention as e-HRM systems are essential for organizations to drive the digitalization of HR and thereby ensure competitiveness. The reasons for project failure are unclearly defined project drivers and improperly handled challenges. Furthermore, the consequences of eHRM are often not well understood and communicated. Therefore, we assume a lack of comprehensive understanding of drivers, challenges, and consequences of e-HRM concerning the organization and the individual. Thus, we analyze the last ten years of e-HRM research and use a structured way to identify eleven drivers, twelve challenges, and twenty consequences of e-HRM. We cluster these findings in an e-HRM synthesis and contribute to e-HRM research by providing avenues for future research on e-HRM success. Collapse

Abstract: There is both widespread interest in encouraging entrepreneurship and universal recognition that the vast majority of these founders will fail, which raises an important unanswered question: What happens to ex-founders when they apply for jobs? Whereas existing research has identified many factors that facilitate movement out of an established organization and into entrepreneurship, far less attention has been devoted to understanding what transpires during the return journey—most notably, how employers evaluate entrepreneurial experience at the point of hire. We propose that employers penalize job candidates with a history of founding a new venture because they believe them to be worse fits and less committed employees than comparable candidates without founding experience. We further predict that the discount for having been an entrepreneur will diminish when other stereotypes about the candidate, particularly those based on gender, will contradict the negative beliefs about ex-founders. We test our proposition using a résumé-based audit and an experimental survey. The audit reveals that founding significantly reduces the likelihood that an employer interviews a male candidate, but there is no comparable penalty for female ex-founders. The experimental survey confirms the gendered nature of the founding penalty and provides evidence that it results from employers’ concerns that founders are less committed and worse organizational fits than nonfounders. Critically, the survey also indicates that these concerns are mitigated for women, helping to explain why they suffer no equivalent founding penalty. Collapse

Abstract: Drawing on organizational theory, agency theory, and research in strategic human resource management, this study explores how chain affiliation influences human resource (HR) investments using data from a nationally random survey of restaurant establishments. We propose that chain-affiliated units will make different investments in those areas of the HR system where chains establish superior organizational routines compared with nonaffiliated units. By contrast, we argue that in the absence of chain routines, ownership incentives will drive differences in human resource investments. Specifically, we find that franchisee-owned units focus more on cost reduction by underinvesting in human resource practices compared with company-owned units and independently owned units when organizational routines are not provided by the chain. We provide further support for our theoretical arguments using additional data on multiunit ownership and franchisor influence. Finally, we conduct supplemental analyses to explore the relationship between different human resource investments and two important organizational outcomes: employee turnover and customer satisfaction ratings from Yelp. Our results highlight the types of human resource practices that are important for service work and suggest that the provision of organizational routines can have important implications for the long-run success of chains and their units. Abstract: Realizing optimal value from digital HRM is a major challenge for most firms. This research adopts a practice lens to investigate how traditional HRM practice elements can constrain digital HRM practices. Findings from an interpretive case study suggest that constrained digital HRM practices emerge because employees and managers are embedded in sticky traditional work practices and not primarily because they are unwilling to adopt digital technologies. Conventional wisdom suggests that the quality of the digital HRM, meeting end-user performance expectations, and managing resistance to change can improve suboptimal digital practices. We propose that digital HRM transformation efforts should change outdated routines rather than focus only on technology improvements and individual behavioral change. The authors propose a model that explains stickiness in digital HRM practices and offers recommendations for HR practitioners to reduce stickiness. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the important roles that human resources (HR) for information technology (IT) professionals and information systems (IS) practices for all workers in an organization play in shaping returns on firms' IT investments. In particular, we consider how incentives, autonomy, and training for IT professionals can enable a firm to better leverage the value of its IT investments. We argue that well-trained, motivated, and empowered IT professionals can help firms make better strategic choices in allocating IT investments and implementing IT projects. We also demonstrate how this moderating relationship depends upon collaborative IS and autonomy-enhancing IS practices that affect other knowledge workers in the firm. We leverage archival data for 228 firms with 736 firm-year observations and document two key findings. We find (1) that empowering HR practices for IT professionals positively moderate the effect of IT investments on firm performance, and (2) that the alignment between empowering HR practices for IT professionals and firm-wide collaborative IS practices enhances the value that firms derive from IT investments. Our results suggest that the business value of IT investments is linked to the rewards and opportunities offered to IT professionals, who have a pivotal role in the effective deployment of IT in organizations. Abstract: The turnover of IT professionals is a perpetual challenge for non-IT organizations. Based on selfcategorization theory, this study proposes that IT employees' turnover may be mitigated by fostering their identification with non-IT organizations, which can be done by meeting various facilitative conditions. Guided by intergroup contact theory, we identify IT employees' perceived alignment between IT and the core business of an organization (business-IT alignment), the extent of boundaryspanning activities that IT employees engage in, and the closeness of the relationships between IT and non-IT employees as the drivers of their organizational identification. Using survey data collected from organizations in different industries, we obtained empirical evidence supporting the positive effects of the perceived business-IT alignment, the extent of boundary-spanning activities, and the relationship closeness between IT and non-IT employees on IT employees' organizational identification. Additionally, there was a three-way interaction effect among the three drivers such that the relationship closeness between IT and non-IT employees reduced the positive effect of the extent of boundary-spanning activities on IT employees' organizational identification when business-IT alignment was low. However, this negative moderating effect diminished when business-IT alignment increased. The findings of this research advance the literature and offer practical guidelines for non-IT organizations on how to enhance their IT employees' organizational identification and how to mitigate their turnover intentions. Abstract: Extensive efforts have been made by both academics and practitioners to understand inter firm competitive relationship. However, it has never been an easy task to fully character ize firms and assess their competitive relationship owing to the challenge of information heterogeneity. In this regard, we propose a novel IT artifact for firm profiling and inter firm competition assessment guided by Information System Design Theory (ISDT). We start by constructing a Heterogeneous Occupation Network (HON) using employees' oc cupation details and education attainments. Then we adopt a Methpath2Vecbased het erogeneous network embedding model to learn firms' latent profiles (embeddings). Using firm embeddings as input, we train multiple classifiers to assess the competitive relation ship among the firms. We demonstrate the utility of our IT artifact with extensive experi mental study and indepth discussions. Our study also reveals that employees' occupation and education information significantly contribute to the identification of the focal firm's potential competitors. Collapse

Abstract: The Information Systems research community has a complex relationship with theory and theorizing. As a community of scholars, our assumptions about theory and theorizing affect every aspect of our intellectual lives. Ideas about what theory is, who theorizes, where theory comes from, when we theorize, how theory is developed and changes, and why theory is (or isn't) important shapes the projects we do, the partnerships we have, the resources available to us, and phenomena that we find to be significant, interesting, and novel.Despite its prominent place in our thinking, it is often difficult to critically examine the assumptions we make about theory and theorizing. Our assumptions affect our priorities, decision, and actions. How we think about theory and its role in our individual and collective intellectual lives is a product of complex paths and multiple influences. Although we may try to stay mindful of how our assumptions shape our perspectives and ways of thinking, from time to time we need to look beyond them. Collapse
