Abstract: Control is necessary for aligning the actions of management (i.e., controllers) and subordinates (i.e., controlees) around common goals. The enactment of control often fails in practice; however, as controlee perceptions may not match those of controllers, leading to a myriad of possible outcomes. Through an interpretive case study of two inter-organisational IT projects, we reveal how controlees' appraisals and responses to controls are context-dependent and play out across multiple levels (e.g., personal, professional, project and organisational contexts). We build on a coping perspective of IS controls to theorise the ‘coping strategies’ that controlees pursued relevant to these contexts and the ‘coping routes’ followed when combining different consecutive coping strategies. We find the process need not end with the selection of a single strategy but can potentially continue as both the controller and controlees make ongoing readjustments. While Behavioural Control Theory traditionally assumes the presence of a single control hierarchy, interorganisational IT projects are multi-level entities that amalgamate different structures and cultures. Our study moves beyond the existing assumptions of Behavioural Control Theory to discuss how a controller's choice of activities shapes the salience of different contexts in controlee appraisals. Abstract: Our research uses a novel perspective of control balancing and stakeholder orientation to explore an information system (IS) phenomenon called enterprise IS diffusion. Employing a case-based, grounded theory approach, we analyze four large-scale IS implementation projects in a Canadian government organization. Our findings offer a synergistic approach to IS diffusion by integrating a dynamic control configuration perspective with stakeholder engagement, stakeholder sensitivity, and the impact of shifting stakeholder orientations on IS diffusion stages.We draw from control, control balancing, and stakeholder theories. Moreover, we refer to the IS implementation and IS diffusion literature to develop our argument. In doing so, this research develops a new and vital con struct—stakeholder orientation—for IS implementation projects. We also identify the existence of four distinct stakeholder orientations, a combination of stakeholder engagement with stakeholder sensitivity in large ISD projects: (a) strategic, (b) responsibility, (c) best interest, and (d) economic cost.Through analysis and synthesis, we establish vital relationships among shifting control configurations, stakeholder engagement, stakeholder sensitivity, and IS diffusion stages, where maintaining an optimal stakeholder orientation, facilitated by appropriate control configuration, leads to a successful IS diffusion outcome. Abstract: The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of trust, when balanced with risk and benefit, on consumer intention to adopt mobile payment systems. A research model is created to assess intent based on perceived trust, along with three antecedents – privacy, security, and familiarity – and packaged with an extended valence framework that takes into account the opposing notions of perceived risk and perceived benefit. Following a pilot study of 76 participants, data is collected from a survey of 234 respondents and is analyzed using consistent Partial Least Squares (PLSc). Results indicate that perceived benefit and perceived trust are the most important influences on the intention to use mobile payment systems, and that the perceived risk of using mobile payment systems has little or no impact on intention to use. The risk result is explained by motivational avoidance theory and institutional dependence. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines the enactment of formal controls in information system development (ISD). Specifically, we investigate process guidance and goal importance as enactments of behavior control and outcome control, respectively. We hypothesize the direct and interaction performance relationships of these control enactments, arguing process guidance exhibits a curvilinear (inverted U-shape) and goal importance exhibits a positive linear relationship with performance. Our finding of a U-shaped interaction relationship indicates that when goal importance is high, higher performance is achieved by either low or high process guidance. Our work bolsters the growing idea that control enactment is a salient consideration in ISD. Collapse

Abstract: Extant research on the control of IS development projects is largely oriented around control choices and en actments from the perspective of managers, thereby neglecting employees’ legitimacy perceptions. Little is known about how such perceptions affect employees’ intentions to comply with controls. To address this shortcoming, we conducted a factorial survey with 258 IS developers nested in 19 organizations. Our multilevel analysis shows that all four considered legitimacy dimensions are primarily a function of control mode and style, and to a lesser extent of control degree. Moreover, legitimacy operating on fairness and autonomy is an important lever for increasing compliance intentions. Collapse

Abstract: Complex IT projects pose particular challenges for the application of control, because of the dynamism and uncertainty involved. Prior studies suggest self-control can complement formal control within complex projects. However, how managers can enact controlee self-control remains an unsolved question. This paper proposes and investigates how enacted formal control unfolds during the course of an IT project and, in particular, how formal control enactment can promote or hinder controlee self-control. We demonstrate through case studies of a control in two wireless communication product development projects that an enabling control style can induce controlees to act to the benefit of both the controller and the controlee, while an authoritative control style encourages controlees’ self-interested behavior. We also show how controlees influence the enactment of control within complex projects and demonstrate the reinforcing effects of the controller’s enactment and controlee response on project outcomes. For practice, this research identifies preconditions necessary for inducing controlee self-control. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the increasing quantum of research on technostress, three particularly noteworthy gaps remain. First, though prior studies have described “technostress creators” through the five dimensions techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty in an aggregated way, they have not adequately considered how these technostress creators individually influence job outcomes. Second, though past organizational research suggests a curvilinear relationship between job stress and job outcomes, research has yet to examine whether the stress-performance dynamics for the technostress context follows the organizational stress literature. Third, even though the literature emphasizes information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled innovation in firms, research has not explored what influence the technostress creators have on ICT-enabled innovation in-depth. Grounding our arguments in the control theory of occupational stress and conservation of resources (COR) theory, we first theorize the linear and curvilinear relationships for each of the five technostress creators with ICT-enabled employee innovation and then test the hypothesized relationships via conducting a survey on organizational employees who regularly used ICTs for professional tasks. The results offer a nuanced understanding about the nature of individual technostress creators and their relationships with ICT-enabled employee innovation. On the practical front, our research paves the way for more meaningful technostress-management strategies in organizations. Collapse

Abstract: Although control modes have been studied extensively in traditional IS contexts, minimal attention has been directed toward understanding how different control modes operate in platform ecosystems. Drawing on the IS control and self-determination literatures, we examined the differential effects of formal and self-control on third-party developers’ continuance intentions and application quality on mobile software platforms. Two studies from a laboratory experiment (N=138) and a follow-up field survey with Android app developers (N=230) show that self-control is superior to formal control because it allows for higher perceived autonomy that in turn promotes continuance intentions and application quality. Abstract: How do stakeholders collaborate to build technology that helps marginalized populations who are difficult to reach? This study reports on an action research project that develops a mobile health application to help people living in India’s slums and rural areas to take better care of their health. In this project, we use lessons from project management control theory to manage stakeholders that come together in a social innovation collaboration. By investigating how control techniques evolved as the controller interacted with the controllees to build the entertaining, culturally-tailored health application, we extend control theory. First, enabling control styles are effective when the controller’s knowledge is limited. Second, control incongruence can be overcome with clan and self-controls. And third, controllee non-compliance with enacted controls and missing features can contribute to the project’s success. Collapse

Abstract: Offshoring of information systems (IS) projects has become a widespread global practice. While prior research suggests that controlling, and communicating with, offshore vendors represent key managerial challenges, the topic of how control is communicated, or transmitted, from client to vendor has been widely neglected. Our study focuses on control transmission in the critical relationship between client and offshore vendor managers, and its impact on the performance of IS offshoring projects. Drawing on a matched-pair survey with 172 client and vendor managers from 86 projects, our results provide several new insights to the IS literature: First, we find that both behaviour and outcome control have the capacity to be transmitted consistently in lateral IS offshore project relationships. Second, our results show that consistent transmission translates into a performance effect only for outcome control. Third, we find that high-performing offshore projects are characterized by both greater control transmission consistency and greater use of outcome control compared to low-performing projects. In sum, our study extends theory on IS project control by highlighting that effective control of IS offshoring projects is not only about selecting proper controls but also about ensuring that, as a controller, you get the control across to the controllee.
