Abstract: Little or no prior work has examined how information technology enables the development of a design centered digital ecosystem. To examine this research question, we employ a capabilities lens and identify the pathways through which IT drives the development of a design centric smart tourism ecosystem. We analyzed archival data and data collected from interviews conducted in Spain, a country which has embarked on smart destinations projects and topped the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Competitiveness Index. From our analysis, we delineate and identify specific IT-enabled capabilities important for a country implementing smart tourism projects. We find that many of the IT resources available help develop key capabilities necessary for creating a design centric smart tourism ecosystem. Collapse

Abstract: In this conceptual paper, we attempt to answer the question: How do firms develop frugal IT capabilities in a resource-constrained ecosystem? Frugal firms can successfully overcome severe infrastructure, financial, social, and technological constraints. "Frugal IT Innovation” is a special case of frugal innovation where IT/IS play a pivotal, core role in enabling capabilities to overcome challenges of resourceconstrained business environments. It is centered on development of products/services with a sharp focus on affordability, simplicity, and sustainability. Taking a digital ecodynamics perspective, we focus on the co-evolution of firm-level capabilities, the frugal ecosystem, and underlying IT systems to uncover how a dynamic, higher-order, "frugal IT innovation capability” (FITIC) drives firm performance. Due to unique ecosystem conditions, we assess firm performance by including social and environmental measures in addition to financial measures. The paper discusses ecosystem-wide implications and contributes to advancement of both theoretical and practice-based knowledge in this domain. Collapse

Abstract: Service-oriented paradigm is emerging as a promising solution to handle enterprise information systems (IS) complexity, interoperability, and evolution issues. However, the shift from a conventional IS architecture to a service-oriented one is not an easy task. Various approaches have been proposed in the literature and most of them deal with either business strategic service design or a technical level IS transformation and migration. There is a need for approaches forming the link between these two levels and designing the information level transformations. In the paper, the concepts of information service and information services system (ISS) are promoted and three different ways to design information services and ISS are proposed taking into account enterprise legacy IS evolution. Abstract: This research investigates the determinants of the performance of small and medium sized manufacturers on business-to-business electronic marketplaces (B2B EMs). Based on the resource-based view, the framework proposed suggests that a manufacturing firm's performance on a B2B EM is determined by EM enabling capabilities, namely the online marketing capability, flexible manufacturing capability and content management capability. Further, the framework posits that these EM enabling capabilities are in turn determined by the firm's IT capability. Data from 358 online manufacturers participating in a B2B EM is collected and analyzed. The results confirm our hypotheses that the online marketing capability, flexible manufacturing capability and content management capability fully mediate the impact of the IT capability on the firm's online performance. Furthermore, the online marketing capability is found to be a stronger factor in influencing the manufacturer's online performance than the others. Collapse

Abstract: In this conceptual paper, we examine IT-enabled frugal innovation from the lens of absorptive capacity theory (ACAP). The practice of frugal innovation in emerging economies is rooted in low cost approaches, constrained resources, and flexible improvisation. As frugal innovation is an emergent phenomenon, there is little theoretical development and empirical investigation with respect to the enabling role of IT. We address this gap by examining the conceptual underpinnings of frugal innovation and its antecedents, such as IT leveraging capability, dynamic knowledge capabilities, and organizational learning. We develop a research model and provide testable propositions. This paper contributes to ACAP literature by providing a look inside the “black box” of the relationships between three different types of learning (according to ACAP) and their effects on the underlying dimensions of frugal innovation. Furthermore, based on our findings, implications for theory and practice are provided along with guidance for future empirical research. Collapse

Abstract: Several studies reveal the option to disguise a disability in online interaction, but none sufficiently analyzes the various factors contributing to a disguise. The primary aim of this paper is to quantify the impact of social psychological factors like stigma consciousness (i.e. expectation of prejudice and discrimination in social interaction) and self-consciousness on the disguise of the real self in online environments among people with physical disabilities. This paper uses data from an online survey with 130 participants to construct a conceptual model related to these factors. Findings reveal that stigma consciousness positively impacts the disguise of the real self. While the body and a physical disability may not be present in the online environment, it plays an important role in how people with disabilities present themselves when they expect stigmatization. Abstract: In turbulent environments, business agility, which is the ability of firms to sense environmental changes and respond to them timely, is an important antecedent of long-term firm success. We introduce business agility as a construct consisting of sensing and responding dimensions reflected by market, network, and operational agility. Here, we explicate the underlying capabilities, drivers, and indicators. By proposing a measurement framework, we address several calls for an operationalization of business agility. Moreover, we validate our conceptualization by applying the business agility measurement framework to the 10 largest banks in North-America. As a result, we find first evidence of a relationship between business agility and a firm’s capability to successfully master environments of higher dynamism. The presented conceptualization is meant to be a foundational building block for research on business agility and the enabling role of IT as an important research topic at the intersection of accounting and IS value research. Abstract: Information technology (IT) can play a key role as a necessary, but not sufficient, source of value. Contemporary research on the strategic role of IT is more and more taking the increasing dynamic and volatile business environment with its increasing intensity of market competition, demand for shortening time to market and pressure of first mover advantage into account. Following this approach, the strategic value of IT can be regarded as an enabler of organizational change. In order to be able to produce value to firms, especially in turbulent environments, IT has not only to adapt itself to a firm’s continuously changing competitive environment, IT has furthermore to enable the adaptation of firms core competences. This study investigates IT’s ability to enable these adaptations by introducing and validating a concept of adaptive IT capability which measures the extent that IT enables the adaptations of firms core competences. The result of this study is a validated research instrument that can be utilized in future research to investigate its antecedent enabling capabilities (upstream factors) as well its effect on organizations and their performance (downstream factors). Abstract: The net-enabled business innovation cycle (NEBIC) model describes a path by which firms employ dynamic capabilities to leverage net-enablement. Some firms strategically aspire to follow this path in a more gradual fashion striving for business process improvements (incremental strategy) while others aspire to exploit rapidly net-enablement to achieve business innovation (leapfrogging strategy) that offers completely new market opportunities. Study results suggest that firms adopt accelerated leapfrogging strategies when faced with more severe external competitive pressures. This combined with strong leadership, a propensity to embrace internal user involvement, IT maturity, and an accommodating firm structure, as indicated by path accelerators, result in higher aspirations for business innovation. Firms shying away from leapfrogging strategies tend to protect existing customers and employees from more radical changes. These firms sometimes lacked the internal capability to enact more aggressive strategies and thus had to acquire the necessary capabilities before aspiring for business innovation. Collapse
