Abstract: Low-code development platforms (LCDPs) offer organizations the potential to reassign time-intensive software development tasks from professional to citizen developers, freeing up resources for professionals while empowering domain experts. However, while software can be rapidly built through citizen development (CDD), organizations must look beyond implementation and consider whether software built by individuals with limited technical backgrounds is scalable and durable. In this study, we investigate the scalability of CDD in organizations by conducting a multivocal literature review, integrating both the current phenomenon (CDD) as well as related, established research streams like end-user development. We identify four dimensions affecting CDD scalability and four temporal stages of CDD maturity, and present these as a CDD scaling framework. Moreover, we identify three overarching themes in scaling CDD. Finally, we present an integrated research agenda based on the CDD scaling framework and overarching themes. Collapse

Abstract: This study develops a conceptual model of organizational IT assimilation maturity based on constructs in the IS literature, qualitative data analysis of three exploratory case studies, and general morphological analysis (GMA). We inductively extract four dimensions of IT assimilation – business processes, information architecture, IT processes, and end-users – and characterize different maturity levels for each dimension. Applying Zwicky’s GMA on the combinatorially large space of IT assimilation configurations, we prune the space to a more limited number of internally consistent and empirically feasible IT assimilation maturity profiles. Abstract: The advantages of low-code platforms include the ability to better manage corporate processes. These processes can quickly become customized and business critical. Consequently, governance of low-code development platforms gains increasing importance in the IT sector. This paper contributes to the design of a governance for low-code platforms using the example of Microsoft PowerPlatform through the action-designresearch-paradigm within a consumer goods corporation. The paper shows both the relationship between IT governance and low-code platforms and what challenges this poses, as well as the importance of governance of low-code platforms in relation to the field of end-user computing. This work aims at developing governance for low-code platforms, and evaluates it using several methods. Based on the results of the naturalistic evaluation, design principles for the development of a governance for low-code platforms are derived. The principles summarize suggestions for designing such governance, providing evidence-based design knowledge for developing governance of lowcode platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Review papers are essential for knowledge development in Information Systems. While some are cited twice a day, others accumulate single digit citations over a decade. The magnitude of these differences prompts us to analyze what distinguishes those reviews that have proven to be integral to scientific progress from those that might be considered less impactful. Our results highlight differences between reviews aimed at describing, un­ derstanding, explaining, and theory testing. Beyond the control variables, they demonstrate the importance of methodological transparency and the development of research agendas. These insights inform all stakeholders involved in the development and publication of review papers. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems (IS) research has continued to consistently evolve with the transitions in the IS discipline over time. There has been a general interest in the IS discipline over time as researchers have examined various aspects such as the intellectual core, diversity, and impact of IS research. On the basis of 2962 articles published in six leading IS journals between 2003 and 2017, topic modeling using latent semantic indexing was applied to author-supplied keywords. Topics such as IS development, IT adoption, and IS usage had endured over time; topics such as e-commerce and IT outsourcing had gained momentum and then waned over time; and topics such as social media, design science, and online communities have gained momentum in recent times. Results suggest that IS research has evolved considerably over time and generally included new frontiers while serving its core strength and identity. Collapse

Abstract: Recent phenomena such as IT consumerization, bring your own device, and shadow IT describe employees who introduce new technologies into their organizations rather than resist technological change. We research the underlying mechanism that drives employees to introduce new private technology into their working environment. In our study, we intentionally separate the impact that organizational IS performance and private technology use have on satisfaction with organizational IS and consider satisfaction’s dynamics as a fundamental aspect in our research model. As a theoretical contribution, we suggest that familiarity with superior private technological alternatives for organizational IS decreases satisfaction with organizational IS and, thus, fosters behavioral change. In our empirical study, we found interaction effects that indicate that innovative employees, in contrast to non-innovative employees, reach a higher satisfaction level in situations with high organizational IS performance. Furthermore, we found that non-inert employees, in contrast to inert employees, become dissatisfied with organizational IS when they experience well-performing IS in their private environments. Abstract: Nonmalicious, end-user computing and information security deviant behavior (NECISDB) (e.g., pasting or sticking computer passwords on office desks, downloading unauthorized software onto work computer) are a major concern to organizations. This study used Social Cognitive Theory, in particular, a simplified version of its core -the triadic reciprocal determinism -to investigate effects of relevant socioorganizational and personal cognitive factors (e.g., organizational facilitators, observational learning/modeling, and self-efficacy) on employee engagement in NECISDB. Survey data was collected from 411 professionals in two European Union countries. Relevant hypotheses were formulated and tested. Results reveal that self-efficacy and its joint effect with self-regulation have negative effects on NECISDB engagement intentions. Although observational learning/modeling does not influence NECISDB intentions directly, it does have an indirect effect through self-efficacy. Organizational facilitators, e.g., awareness training and its joint effect with observational learning/modeling did not influence NECISDB intentions. Intentions are positively linked to self-reported engagement in NECISDB. Collapse

Abstract: Although software development teams increasingly use Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), a minimal amount is known regarding the impact of PaaS on software development. We explored the impact of PaaS on software development through a grounded-theory study, conducting 48 interviews in 16 teams. The data turned our attention to the affordances, or potentials for action, that PaaS provides to software development teams. Two key affordances emerging from our data analysis were self-organizing and triggering continuous feedback. Actualizing these affordances helped accelerate the collective learning processes that underlie software development, thus supporting software development teams in their quest for agility. Our emerging theory explains how, why, and when these affordances arise. The key contribution of our paper lies in unveiling how the use of cloud computing technology can transform technology-mediated collective learning activities by helping to remove barriers to rapid feedback. Our findings also imply that organizations can leverage PaaS to facilitate the transition to agile and continuous software development practices, in particular in conjunction with cross-functional team designs. Abstract: Research on Shadow IT is facing a conceptual dilemma in cases where previously “covert” systems developed by business entities (individual users, business workgroups, or business units) are integrated in the organizational IT management. These systems become visible, are therefore not “in the shadows” anymore, and subsequently do not fit to existing definitions of Shadow IT. Practice shows that some information systems share characteristics of Shadow IT, but are created openly in alignment with the IT department. This paper therefore proposes the term “Business-managed IT” to describe “overt” information systems developed or managed by business entities. We distinguish Business-managed IT from Shadow IT by illustrating case vignettes. Accordingly, our contribution is to suggest a concept and its delineation against other concepts. In this way, IS researchers interested in IT originated from or maintained by business entities can construct theories with a wider scope of application that are at the same time more specific to practical problems. In addition, value-laden terminology is complemented by a vocabulary that values potentially innovative developments by business entities more adequately. From a practical point of view, the distinction can be used to discuss the distribution of task responsibilities for information systems. Collapse

Abstract: Research in the IS field has been focusing on investigating the adverse effects of ICT usage such as technostress. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated mechanisms for the alleviation of this phenomenon. This study contributes to the technostress literature by adopting a mindfulness perspective that has not been investigated before. In this paper, we aim to explore the role of IT mindfulness as a buffer to technostress stressors as well as a mechanism that can mitigate the negative consequences arising from extended ICT usage within organizational settings. By following a survey based approach and exploring a sample of 440 working individuals, our SEM analysis revealed that IT mindfulness constitutes a potential further mechanism that can effectively reduce technostress conditions, enhance user satisfaction while utilizing ICT’s for work tasks and improve task performance. Further research is proposed into expanding the proposed model, exploring the influence of IT mindfulness on additional organizational outcomes. Collapse
