Abstract: Flow, the holistic sensation people experience when they act with total involvement, is a known driver for desired work outcomes like task performance. However, the increasing ubiquity of IT at work can disrupt employees' flow. Thus, the impact of IT-mediated interruptions on flow warrants more attention in research and practice. We conducted a NeuroIS laboratory experiment focusing on a typical office work task-an invoice matching task (i.e., matching customer payments to invoices). We manipulated interruption frequency (low, high) and content relevance (irrelevant, relevant) to study the impact of interruptions on self-reported flow, its dimensions, and high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV; calculated from electrocardiography recordings) as a proxy for parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activation. We found that content relevance moderated the relationship between interruption frequency and self-reported flow and that these results vary along flow dimensions. Abstract: Techno-invasion refers to constant connectivity of being "always exposed" that blurs desired boundaries between work and personal life and represents an emerging phenomenon of scholarly investigation. As work-related use of information technology (IT) during non-work time leads to techno-invasion, a minimal amount is known about whether techno-invasion may engender employees' deviant behaviors, a behavior that violates organizational norms and may be intended to harm the organization, its members, or both. Drawn upon the self-regulation theory, this study examines this relationship by focusing on psychological processes. Based on time-lagged survey data collected from customer service teams from two financial service companies in China, our results show that (1) techno-invasion is associated with self-regulation impairment (i.e., the reduction of one's self-regulatory resources needed to control undesirable impulses), which in turn provokes employee's deviant behavior; (2) perceived team bottom-line mentality (i.e., mindset to prioritize the team bottom-line outcomes) reinforces the relationship between techno-invasion and self-regulation impairment; and (3) IT mindfulness (i.e., employees' focus in being creative using IT, and learning and discovering new and more efficient ways of using IT) negatively moderates the relationship between techno-invasion and self-regulation impairment, thus serving as a remedy to alleviate or prevent self-regulation impairment and employee's deviant behavior. We explain theoretically and test empirically the impact of techno-invasion on employees' deviant behavior, emphasizing the intermediate psychological processes and the boundary conditions that affect this relationship. Abstract: We report on the current state of type 2 diabetes clinical decision support systems (CDSS), identify gaps that contribute to the lack of CDSS success, and apply lessons learned from practice for developing and implementing a localized diabetes CDSS. A survey of the literature reveals mixed findings regarding the efficacy of the CDSS; they do not include patient-rich information -the patient experience data in the electronic health records. We believe that diabetes care can improve by guiding clinical decisions using published evidence, patient preferences, and clinical data augmented by the local patient experience and social determinants of health using natural language processing and machine learning techniques. Abstract: Organizations invest lots of effort and costs in reducing technostress, as it harms their employees' wellbeing and reduces their work performance. Therefore, it is imperative to mitigate technostress. We suppose each individual has a unique digital mindset, a malleable factor describing their specific ways of thinking and awareness, which guides how to react to techno-stressors. We build on the transactional model of stress and survey 151 employees to test the role of the digital mindset. Our results show that individuals with a strong digital mindset respond less strongly to techno-stressors with reduced job performance, reduced job satisfaction, and increased turnover intention. We contribute to research by carving out how individuals react to techno-stressors in line with their digital mindset, reflecting that digital mindset might buffer that techno-stressors have adverse impacts on individuals and organizations. Abstract: Technostress is common and has harmful consequences. Therefore, researchers have shown increasing interest in explaining technostress in the field of information systems (IS). While extant research merits in identifying the causes and consequences of technostress, it has not explained empirically why information technology (IT) users have different responses to similar potentially stressful IT events. Indeed, events such as smartphone failures can derive negative distress responses for some users and positive eustress responses for others. To address this gap in research, we conducted a qualitative study by interviewing users who had experienced smartphone failures. As a contribution, our findings uncover five distinct types of narratives for technostress responses and identify four perceptual dimensions that shape the corresponding responses. As such, we provide an initial answer to the call for understanding users’ different interpretations of potentially stressful IT events. Such knowledge can help promoting the favorable outcomes of IT use and minimizing the negative side effects. Collapse

Abstract: This paper focuses on telemedicine implementation, which can be used to extend modern medical knowledge to remote areas in developing countries. By examining doctor- patient interactions in the context of a telemedicine program in India, we posit how the behaviour of the actors interacting over virtual media is determined by interplay between two dominant institutional logics, namely logic of care and logic of choice. The paper draws on the tenets of institutional logics to extend the theoretical understanding about processes of engagement of actors with a new technology and explicates how the engagement evolves with the use of technology. Abstract: Mobile emergency response applications involving location-based alerts and physical response of networked members increasingly appear on smartphones to address a variety of emergencies. EMS (Emergency Medical Services) administrators, policy makers, and other decision makers need to determine when such systems present an effective addition to traditional Emergency Medical Services. We developed a software tool, the Emergency Response Community Effectiveness Modeler (ERCEM) that accepts parameters and compares the potential smartphone-initiated Samaritan/member response to traditional EMS response for a specific medical condition in a given geographic area. This study uses EMS data from the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) and analyses geographies based on Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) and Economic Research Service (ERS) urbanicity codes. To demonstrate ERCEM's capabilities, we input a full year of NEMSIS data documenting EMS response incidents across the USA. We conducted three experiments to explore anaphylaxis, hypoglycemia and opioid overdose events across different population density characteristics, with further permutations to consider a series of potential app adoption levels, Samaritan response behaviors, notification radii, etc. Our model emphasizes how medical condition, prescription adherence levels, community network membership, and population density are key factors in determining the effectiveness of Samaritan-based Emergency Response Communities (ERC). We show how the efficacy of deploying mHealth apps for emergency response by volunteers can be modelled and studied in comparison to EMS. A decision maker can utilize ERCEM to generate a detailed simulation of different emergency response scenarios to assess the efficacy of smartphone-based Samaritan response applications in varying geographic regions for a series of different conditions and treatments. Abstract: Even though IT use has numerous benefits for users and organizations, such as improved performance and greater productivity, an increasing number of users experience IT use as a source of stress, i.e. technostress. Since such technostress can result in decreased user well-being, it is important to understand what leads individuals to perceive it. Based on psychology research suggesting user personality as a cause of stress perceptions, this research uses the Theory of Personality to investigate how user personality influences technostress. In developing our research model, we focus on the dynamic, context-specific trait IT mindfulness and on the degree to which this trait determines the perception of technostress. This study contributes to technostress research by revealing that user personality in general and IT mindfulness in particular are determinants of technostress, which organizations should account for to prevent employees from perceiving technostress.
