Abstract: Although technologies spurred by the “Internet of things” are increasingly being introduced in homes, only a few studies have examined the adoption or diffusion of such household technologies. One particular area of interest in this context is electricity consumption, especially the introduction of smart metering technology (SMT) in households. Despite its growing prominence, SMT implementation has met with various challenges across the world, including limited adoption by consumers. Thus, this study empirically examines the antecedents of SMT adoption by potential consumers. Using a mixed-methods design, the study first unearths the SMT-specific antecedents, then develops a contextualized model by drawing on theories from motivational psychology and the antecedents identified earlier, and finally tests this model using a large-scale survey of German consumers. The results provide support for many of the hypotheses and highlight the importance of motivational factors and some household demographic, privacy, and innovation-related factors on consumers’ intention to adopt SMT. Abstract: The potential of information systems (IS) to enable environmental sustainability necessitates an understanding of how organisations can realise this potential. In this study, building on the absorptive capacity theory and following a multi-disciplinary and multi-method approach, we propose that developing IS-environmental absorptive capacity is a significant mechanism to deliver IS-enabled change that addresses environmental issues. We commenced with a literature review and exploratory interviews to define the IS-environmental absorptive capacity construct. We then developed a model that proposes that sustainable IS triggers, knowledge exposure and prior experience influence IS-environmental absorptive capacity, which in turn contributes to the level of environmentally sustainable IS assimilation as well as to the cost saving, operational performance and reputation of organisations. The model was first tested through an international survey of 148 senior IS managers. The findings support our model regarding the antecedents and value of IS-environmental absorptive capacity. A follow-up case study corroborated the survey results and provided additional insights into the nature and causes of IS-environmental absorptive capacity and its value. This study, in addition to presenting empirical evidence, defines and operationalises the IS-environmental absorptive capacity construct in a theoretically and operationally meaningful way. Collapse

Abstract: Games have become an integral part of our lives, which is why they are increasingly being used for other purposes than pure entertainment, such as learning, training, informing, or advertising. In information systems (IS) research, this type of games has also been discussed under the notion of serious games, which are aimed at engaging users to elicit behavior change through motivation. In this research-in-progress paper, we propose a research model on user engagement with serious games and draw on the example of eco-effective behaviors toward renewable energy. We present an experimental design with which we plan to test our model empirically and aim to manipulate the presence and absence of two salient game design elements: storytelling and secret item.
