Abstract: The term affordance appears with increasing frequency in the Information Systems (IS) literature. Nevertheless, those who study information technologies/information systems (IT/IS) via the affordance lens often have different views about its origin, meaning, and appropriate application in IS research. In turn, not spelling out the related assumptions and boundaries inherent in these diverse views may have hindered a wider and more cumulative adoption of the affordance lens in IS research. This paper offers a potential solution by (1) synthesizing the ecological psychology literature to suggest five key modules of the affordance concept relevant to IS research and (2) taking stock of IS research that has employed the affordance concept and classifying it according to its focus on three key affordance elements: IT artifact, user, and context. Finally, this paper presents a set of challenges, opportunities, and recommendations regarding how IS researchers can advance affordance-based research in the field. Collapse

Abstract: Online customer reviews (OCR) are an established source of competitive intelligence. Since OCR reflect per­ ceptions of past users about product features and performance, prospective customers of mobile apps often resort to OCR before they decide to download an app. In addition to the textual content of the OCR, potential users of the app often consult the star ratings provided by the reviewers. In this paper, we determine if the star rating of mobile payment apps suitably captures the appropriate customer perception reflected in the textual content of the OCR for the payment apps. We conduct a three-dimensional analysis of 146,914 reviews from two popular mobile payment apps and uncover the sentiment and emotions captured in the review text, and the reactions in the emojis. Our analysis shows that the consolidated sentiment and the happiness emotion obtained from the OCR of mobile payment apps impacts the star ratings more strongly, than other emotions embedded in the text, and reactions in the emojis. The findings also hold good during the Covid-19 pandemic. We propose a novel perception score that captures the nuances in the OCR more effectively and suggest how mobile app providers can use it to arrange the OCR for better compatibility with content. The results of this research will be useful for mobile app providers that depend on OCR for popularizing their apps and will provide them a novel metric based on content, that can leverage OCR better to influence future downloads. Abstract: Music is exerting powerful effects on people's mind and behavior in modern life. Music emotion recognition could provide unprecedented opportunities for many business applications, such as emotion-based music recommendation and music-based purchase behavior prediction. Unfortunately, the performances of existing music emotion recognition models are far from satisfaction, especially on fine-grained level. In this paper, we design a framework to integrate data from two sources, namely lyrics, and audios, to cast music to Plutchik's emotion wheel. We utilized DCNN and TextCNN to extract the multimodal feature representations of each utterance, and developed a stacking ensemble learning model to solve the challenge of extreme imbalance among features from different sources (lyrics and audios). Then, we proposed a LSTM-based classifier to accomplish training and predicting tasks of emotion recognition based on global features of the music clips. We conducted three experiments to test the effectiveness of our framework. Experiment results showed that our framework outperformed existing models. Moreover, our framework can be successfully extended to recognize emotion evolution on a fine-grained level. Collapse

Abstract: The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology expands the boundary of business practice, inducing the emergence and application of business intelligence (BI) that has promoted the transformation of information techniques to optimize business decision and operation. However, there is a lack of theoretical consensus and measurement of the technology embedded in BI at present. This study exploratively develops the SenseTransform-Drive (STD) conceptual model of BI based on dynamic capabilities theory and organizational evolutionary theory to explain the core BI capabilities. By using factoring analysis and structural equation modeling analysis, we extract the latent constructs and empirically verify the validity of the STD model and further examine the correlation and mode of interaction of the three core BI capabilities and the impact of BI application on firm performance in the real economy with a sample contextual to Chinese business practices. The study results show that there are direct and high-intensity cumulative positive effects among the structural components of the STD conceptual model and BI-related dynamic capabilities can enhance operating efficiency and firm performance. Abstract: To investigate how firms engage in forward-looking action, we examined the processes by which a pioneering firm actively influenced the future of its industry over five decades. From our longitudinal field study, we generated a process model of strategy making that helps to explain how firms work to shape the future in some preferred fashion. Specifically, we describe our findings on shaping-oriented forward-looking strategy making in terms of “artificial evolution” processes—interventions by which a firm’s leaders challenge the status quo and leverage the internal ecology of the organization to nudge the evolution of the business landscape toward a preferred direction. This is distinct from the more conventional and commonly invoked natural selection processes that describe how firms adapt to markets or unintentionally shape them. These findings on strategy making as akin to artificial evolution complement and extend the traditional view of strategic management, which has historically focused on processes anchored in models of search and adaptation. Our findings also shed light on an exceptional mode of strategy making—one that goes beyond concerns of firm survival and competitive advantage, and tackles societal grand challenges. By accounting for constructivist, forward-looking dimensions of strategic agency, our findings also contribute to the microfoundations of strategic decision making and to organization theories, more generally. Abstract: The emergence of big data analytics (BDA) has posed opportunities as well as multiple challenges to business practitioners, who have called for research on the behavioural factors underlying BDA adoption at the individual level. The purpose of this study is to extend the information systems (IS) research on storytelling and to explore the role and characteristics of deliberate storytelling in individual-level BDA adoption. This case study used the grounded theory approach to extract qualitative data from 24 interviews, field notes, and documentary data. The explicit contributions of the study to the literature include (a) increasing our understanding of the facilitating role of deliberate storytelling in individual-level BDA adoption, (b) identifying four deliberate storytelling patterns and seven underlying corporate stories disseminated by organizations to influence individual behaviour, and (c) defining the core characteristics of effective deliberate storytelling. This study has multiple implications for business practitioners and demonstrates how deliberate storytelling can be used as a facilitating mechanism in daily business practice. Collapse

Abstract: In this study, we examine the nature of Schumpeterian competition between entrants and incumbents. We argue that incumbents may respond to the threat of entry by either attacking the entrant or trying to learn from it, and that entrants, in turn, may react by either reciprocating the incumbent’s advances or retreating from it. Putting these competitive choices together, we develop a framework of four distinct potential scenarios of Schumpeterian competition. In particular, we emphasize a scenario we term creative divergence, wherein incumbents try to learn from entrants and build on their technologies, but their investments to do so cause entrants to retreat, resulting in diminishing returns to learning investments by incumbents. Exploratory analyses of the U.S. cardiovascular medical device industry find patterns consistent with the creative divergence scenario, with incumbent knowledge investments helping them to learn from entrants, but these learning benefits being undermined as entrants move away from incumbents. Abstract: Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are repositories of electronic medical histories of patients, maintained over time. Hospital operations and EMRs typically become interdependent, due to the inclusion of medical workflow- and administrative process support as core functionalities. Hence, it is profoundly challenging to effectively enable complex, multi-stakeholder clinical processes, enhance patient care, and align EMRs with hospital strategies, goals, and needs. In this study, we build upon co-evolutionary IS-alignment (COISA) theories and argue that current approaches to business-IT alignment in hospitals should be reconceptualised, particularly regarding modern EMR implementations. In this effort, we respond to the call for more empirical research on business-IT co-evolution. We unfold how COISA manifests during EMR implementations using a multiple case study method. This method allows us to get a rich understanding of the complex social phenomena that emerge during EMR implementations. Outcomes show that COISA manifests in all three cases, involving different stakeholder groups, but in different localities and intensities. These findings suggest that COISA is a suitable framework to describe and understand EMR implementations and that different configurations of interaction patterns can lead to comparable results. This understanding enables EMR practitioners to more effectively identify improvement areas in dealing with internal and external complexity. Collapse
