Abstract: Digitalization permeates entire companies. Rethinking information systems (IS) success models developed in the 1980/1990s becomes obvious. But how does one define such a new model and implement it? Taking an SAP S/4HANA migration as our use case, the new triple "E" rating on hand focuses on the IS success of digital technologies by balancing efficiency, effectiveness, and experience criteria. Six takeaways emerge from our case study that should drive future discussion: (1) Evaluate digital technologies by adopting a simple but comprehensive approach including criteria beyond efficiency.(2) Consider diverse IS success perspectives consciously but never lose focus on the enduser. (3) A triad of efficiency, effectiveness, and experience encompasses the challenges of digital technologies. (4) Separate efficiency and effectiveness criteria, however, consider trade-offs between them. (5) The experience category highlights digital awareness and socio-technical changes. (6) Tailor your triple "E" rating individually to your project. Collapse

Abstract: Although significant research has examined the effect of enterprise information systems on the behavior and careers of employees, the majority of this work has been devoted to the study of blue- and gray-collar workers, with little attention paid to the transformative effect information technology may have on high-status professionals. In this paper, we begin to bridge this gap by examining how highly skilled professionals react to the increasing presence of enterprise systems within their organizations. Specifically, we investigate how the implementation of enterprise systems—in the form of electronic health records—affects the decision of physicians to continue practicing at their current hospital. Results suggest that when enterprise systems create complementarities for professionals, their duration of practice at the organization increases significantly. However, when technologies are disruptive and force professionals to alter their routines, there is a pronounced exodus from the organization. Interestingly, these effects are strongly moderated by individual and organizational characteristics, such as the degree of firm-specific human capital, local competition, and the prevalence of past disruptions, but are not associated with accelerated retirement or the strategic poaching of talent by competing organizations. Abstract: Although multidisciplinary by nature, the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS) has established itself as the leading international conference in business intelligence (BI), business analytics (BA) and, more recently, big data research. Given a large number of academic and industry conferences in these areas, it is worth reflecting on and learning from the long tradition of BI and BA research at HICSS. In this paper, we analyze the 28-year history of HICSS’ longest-running minitrack on BI and BA in order to identify its main research themes and reflect on their evolution over time. Our insights provide research grounding for the current thinking about the big data phenomenon, which, contrary to many statements, is not new. We also illustrate a practical method of combining a semantic text-mining tool (Leximancer) and collaborative sensemaking. Reflecting on the method, we argue that technology itself—regardless of how sophisticated it might be—does not generate meaningful insights. Rather, we argue that domain experts co-construct these insights through an iterative collaborative sensemaking process in a given context, an important point that other researchers interested in semantic text-mining tools should consider. Abstract: This paper focuses on the process of maximizing the benefits from a business intelligence (BI) application. A general theoretical framework of analysis is formulated based on previous research into organizational deep structure and inertia. Our framework is applied to a case study of a U.K. retail bank which used an existing customer profitability BI application to transform its marketing strategy. We find that an organization’s ability to extract strategic BI benefits is influenced by its deep structure (core beliefs, organizational structures, control systems and distribution of power) and also by its ability to overcome the effects of the multiple inertia sources that the deep structure generates. Organizations should therefore carefully consider the effects of multidimensional organizational inertia and aim to manage inertia sources in respect to information from BI applications when links that embed the BI into an organization as a whole are developed and maintained. We also present generally applicable insights into enhancing the delivery of informative long-term BI decision support for organizations. Collapse

Abstract: We study the impact of Chief Executive Officer (CEO)’s IT knowledge on firm performance by leveraging the knowledge-based view and the influence of top management. We take an innovative approach by examining CEO’s conversation with financial analysts and investors in the earnings conference calls, which are considered as the biggest information event for listed companies. We measure CEO’s IT knowledge by counting the amount of IT discussions in the CEO’s answers to IT-related questions at the conference calls. The results show a positive relationship between CEO’s IT knowledge and firm performance. The findings will have clear and high contributions to the core IS literature of business value of IT by explicitly studying the role of top executives in IT success. Collapse

Abstract: Management support systems (MSS) help managers to perform their jobs more efficiently. With in-memory technology, a new IT enabler promises to support managers by benefits ranging from reducing time for MSS data entry and analysis to completing even new topics of analysis. Hence, the present situation is favorable for an MSS redesign applying in-memory apps. Such apps are fieldtested and ready-to-use, but from a business perspective they lack "impact." Based on findings from a literature review and results from a workshop with an expert focus group validated with one-on-one manager interviews, we propose four initial use situations in which in-memory apps contribute to greater MSS acceptance: (1) In-memory apps should accelerate the MSS response time for both check status and receive an alert. In doing so, they should focus on information from management accounting.(2) By delivering information more timely, in-memory apps should contribute to MSS standard reports and financial closing. (3) In-memory apps should accelerate MSS response time for both ad-hoc analysis and drill-down/drill-through analysis. (4) Leveraging in-memory apps, MSS ad-hoc analysis and drill down/drill-through analysis should become more flexible. Collapse

Collaboration technology promises to support managers in doing so. Hence, the present situation is favorable for a redesign of management support systems (MSS) incorporating collaboration technology. To examine such technology, we consider “analyst”- and “consumer”-type managers’ perspectives and cover collaboration technology for different devices. Based on findings from a literature review and arguments validated in structured manager interviews, we propose four initial design guidelines facilitating collaboration for managers: (1) Coordination: MSS should indicate the availability of other users, send read confirmations, and provide document sharing. (2) Communication: MSS should enable on-topic annotations and sending them to other users “at the push of a button.” (3) Cooperation: MSS should provide a comprehensive managerial selfservice search function. Abstract: Information Systems (IS) meant to help senior managers are known as Executive Information Systems (EIS). Despite a five-decade tradition of such IS, many executives still complain that they bear little relevance to managing a company and, even more, fail to accommodate their working style. The increasing acceptance of IS among today's executives and technological advances of the Internet era make the present moment favorable for redesigning EIS. Following the design science paradigm in IS research, this article provides six principles for such a redesign. To do so, we survey executives regarding their requirements and the IS they currently use. We then derive principles for a redesign to fill the gaps. They address diverse areas: a comprehensive information model, functions to better analyze and process information, easy-to-use IS handling, a more flexible IS architecture and data model, a proper information management, and fast prototype implementation. Finally a field test demonstrates and evaluates the utility of our proposal by means of a prototype. Collapse

Abstract: The increasing volatility of their companies' environment is a growing concern for executives. ISbased environmental scanning that complements the accounting information system domain can help to manage this challenge. A substantial body of knowledge on such information systems exists, but these concepts often go unused in practice. This article develops five design guidelines for environmental scanning systems that are more applicable than those outlined in previous research. In doing so, we first compile a set of requirements based on the principle of economic efficiency, and then use findings from the absorptive capacity theory to specify them. Challenging several implementations against these requirements in a multicase study generates findings that we synthesize into design guidelines. They address diverse areas: designing a more comprehensive model for information gathering, setting up a collective learning process for interpreting information, using IS to enable management techniques familiar to executives, designing processes for more interorganizational integration of environmental scanning systems, and accelerating prototyping.
