Abstract: The amount of crowdfunding research that investigates funding success factors has been increasing. The existing research shows inconsistent evidence regarding how a prosocial project description affects funding success and largely ignores the issue of alignment/misalignment among different factors in affecting funding success. We suggest that funders’ prosocial motivation can be an important factor for this inconsistent evidence. We integrate the elaboration likelihood model and language expectancy theory and demonstrate distinct decision-making patterns from high and low prosocial motivation funders. Through three experiments, we provide evidence for alignment/misalignment effects among funders’ prosocial motivation, prosocial project descriptions, and platform types (donation-based vs. reward-based). While there are no differences for participants with high prosocial motivation across conditions, we find that participants with low prosocial motivation are more willing to contribute to a project that has alignment between the different factors, namely to a project that has a high prosocial description on a donation-based platform, or to a project that has a low prosocial description on a reward-based platform. This research sheds light on the crowdfunding and prosocial motivation literature. Collapse

Abstract: This study advances the IS literature by investigating the effects of visualization on promoting sustainability knowledge and pro-environmental behaviors. Specifically, drawing on the visualization literature, we explain how the key visualization features, expectancy illustration, and interactivity affect individuals' understanding of the impact of their behaviors on the environment, encouraging pro-environmental behaviors. Additionally, we draw on the pedagogy literature to explicate that the effects of visualization on learning outcomes and pro-environmental practices can be explained through individuals' psychological responses in their course of interpreting the visualization. Collectively, this study presents our endeavor in understanding the roles of visualization in ecological discourse by integrating the visualization literature and sustainability research. Moreover, by unboxing individuals' psychological processes in interpreting visualization, we offer a fresh perspective to understanding the promises and challenges of using visualization for knowledge acquisition. Abstract: This study investigates the impact of emotions conveyed in crowdfunding campaigns on the commitment of backers. Based on language expectancy theory and research on emotional psychology, we propose the effect of emotions depends on campaign category membership and varies between social and commercial crowdfunding campaigns. Empirical analyses of 12,862 Indiegogo campaigns using EmoRoBERTa, a pre-trained neural network algorithm specifically designed to identify emotions, reveal that gratitude and optimism have opposite effects on crowdfunding participation for social and commercial entrepreneurs. In particular, optimism is positively associated with backer participation in social and negatively in commercial campaigns. Counterintuitively, gratitude is positively associated with backer participation in commercial but negatively in social campaigns. Contrasting our analysis, we further examine the link between a factual, neutral tone and crowdfunding participation. Interestingly, a neutral tone has a positive relationship with crowdfunding participation in commercial campaigns. The association reverses for social campaigns. Collapse

Abstract: Despite their astounding growth in recent years, online gig platforms face key challenges to increase gig workers' working commitment. This study aims to examine the impact of a fundamental organizational design element payout frequency, which refers to the intervals at which workers access the funds they have earned. Drawing on expectancy theory, we argue that a higher payout frequency enhances both the quantity and quality of gig work. To investigate this, we analyze proprietary data from a quasi-natural experiment that involved an unexpected reduction in the payout cycle for gig workers in a specific geographic region. By employing propensity score matching and a difference-in-differences approach, we demonstrate that a shorter payout cycle led to an increase in the effort among the impacted gig workers and also resulted in improved work quality. These findings contribute to our understanding of effectively motivating and managing gig workers, ultimately influencing customer engagement on platforms. Collapse

Abstract: The online charitable crowdfunding platform has emerged as a powerful tool for raising funds from large crowds to support non-profit activities. Following a patronage model, fundraisers on the platform are forced to use compelling stories to capture the attention of individual donors. As such, conceptualizing a persuasive request narrative for projects posted on the platform becomes one of the most pressing issues. Project writing guidelines, as an important platform design, are widely adopted to help fundraisers. Unfortunately, their role in the market has not been well examined. To fill this research gap, we leverage a unique dataset from a leading donation-based crowdfunding platform in the United States and make full use of its policy change opportunity on writing guidelines to thoroughly investigate its impacts and the underlying mechanism on donors’ contributions. Our empirical results show that the more constraints the guidelines impose on writing, the more likely they are to weaken the persuasiveness of narratives. We specifically focus on three aspects of narrative complexity and find that writing guidelines have a negative impact on linguistic complexity, which in turn diminishes donors’ contribution behavior. Nevertheless, they have positive impacts on both content and structural complexity, with the difference being that increased content complexity weakens donors’ contributions, while higher structural complexity is more likely to attract donations. Moreover, we examine the heterogeneous effects of writing guidelines on fundraisers with varied involvements. These findings deepen our understanding of writing guid ance design in online platforms and have implications for charitable crowdfunding platforms and fundraisers. Collapse

Abstract: Crowdfunding has become immensely popular today, allowing entrepreneurs to present innovative ideas to a broad audience of potential investors. However, due to the online nature of crowdfunding, investors have to use clues only available on the website to decide on whether to invest or not. Grounded in language expectancy theory (LET), we proposed and tested hypotheses suggesting that, when no knowledge of the entrepreneur is available, investors have to use language expectancy as a way to inform them on their investment decisions. Furthermore, we propose that communication content in entrepreneurial narratives such as vague communi cation and linguistics affect the quality of information leading to a violation of language expectancy. We also postulate that this will manifest in affect intensity and in two-sided persuasion. We separated the description and risks and challenges (R&C) sections from Kickstarter and performed discrete analyses with regressions to further test two-sidedness. Next, we sought to understand causal knowledge of the underlying target class by imple menting a Bayesian Network to find the conditional probability of the variables before attempting to find a nearoptimal probability of funding success using a genetic algorithm. We found robust support for our hypotheses and helped shed light on which information is received and interpreted by investors leading to a greater like lihood of funding success. Abstract: Online collaboration communities are increasingly taking on new roles beyond knowledge creation and exchange, especially the role of a skill-signaling channel for career-motivated community members. This paper examines the contingency effects of job-market conditions for career-motivated knowledge contributions in online collaboration communities. From the data of individual-level activities in a computer programming-related online Q&A community (Stack Overflow), merged with job-market data for software developers, we find robust evidence of a positive association between community members' career motivations and their knowledge contributions. More importantly, we find that this positive relationship is strengthened by job-market conditions: the number of vacancies in the job market, the expected salaries from these jobs, and the transparency in the flow of careerrelated information between the community and external recruiters. We contribute to the motivation literature in online collaboration communities by identifying and substantiating the role of contextual factors in mobilizing members' career motivation. Our study thus offers novel insight into how career motivation can be effectively utilized to motivate contributors in these communities. Our findings also point to a possible paradigm change by characterizing online collaboration communities as emerging institutions for career motivation and skill signaling. Collapse

Abstract: Sponsored reviews have become prevalent on e-commerce websites, third-party review platforms, and social media. To explore the interactive effect between sponsorship disclosure of positive reviews, emotional intensity, and tie strength on online review credibility and consumers’ purchase intention, this study proposed a moderated moderation model. In an online scenario-based experiment, we found that sponsorship disclosure of positive reviews negatively influences consumers’ purchase intention, and review credibility mediates the relationship. In addition, emotional intensity strengthens the negative effects of sponsorship disclosure of positive reviews on review credibility and purchase intention, while tie strength weakens the moderating effects of emotional intensity. Abstract: Task instructions are seeker-generated content aiming to disclose information and persuade solvers to participate in crowdsourcing contests. There are various writing strategies for task instructions, with different levels of informativeness and persuasiveness for solvers. This work examines how requirement-oriented and rewardoriented strategies affect solver participation. The empirical results reveal a U-shaped relationship between the usage of restrictive words and the number of participants. In contrast, an inverted U-shaped relationship is found between terminology usage and participation. Emphasizing intrinsic and extrinsic rewards through issuerelevant information statements and emotional appeals also proves to be effective in motivating solvers’ involvement. Collapse

Abstract: In response to the "Internet + Public Service" reformation, Chinese government organizations increasingly use e-participation platforms to interact with citizens, making how government respond to citizens' inquiry increasingly critical in citizen participation. This study is one of the few attempts to study the effect of language style of government response on citizen participation. Based on the language expectancy theory, we hypothesize that government response using appropriate formal and emotional language will change citizen e-participation behavior. Using text data from 11,194 users in a Chinese citizen inquiry forum, we found that emotional language has the positive impact on citizens' continuous participation significantly. And both emotional language and formal language can promote citizens' participation quality. Moreover, we identified the complementary effects of two languages on e-participation. This study has implications for both researchers and practitioners. Collapse
