Abstract: Immersive Virtual Reality (later VR) has its potential in enabling learning experiences. Several studies adopt experiential learning as a key concept to understand the outcomes of VR. This study consists of two parts -the first part conducts a systematic literature review on VR experiential learning and suggests seven main dimensions for the concept identified by the existing literature: engagement, sociability, contextual information, physical sensation, interactivity, cognitions, and presence. The second part adopts a value co-creation and co-destruction approach to empirically test the construction underlying VR experiential learning. The findings indicate 33 value cocreation and 19 value co-destruction constructs contributing to the seven dimensions. The suggested seven value construct dimensions combined with our own empirical findings and the theory of experiential learning, our research results build understanding about the experiential learning in the VR context and further encourages future VR learning research to test and validate these propositions. Abstract: The relevance of data literacy has increased substantially over the past three decades. When trained well, data-literate employees at all levels can make data-driven decisions, improving the overall performance of their organization. Utilizing Transformative Learning Theory (TLT) and Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), this paper proposes a systematic data education framework for increasing data literacy across organizations. Focusing on the needs and experiences of non-expert end-users, this model proposes the following four learning strategies in data literacy training design: experiential data training, critical incident reflection, rational open discourse, and autonomous experimentation. To inform this model and further investigate barriers to data literacy in organizations, interviews were conducted with individuals from two different data analytics units in the U.S. Department of Defense. This research provides key insight and practical suggestions for developing and improving data literacy training programs. Collapse

Abstract: While prior research on gig work environments studied necessary technical skills for information systems development (ISD) professionals and how they can be developed, the improvement of non-technical skills (NTS) has been rarely explored. However, to successfully engage in the gig work economy, the need for strong NTS is increasing. Based on an experiential learning theory (ELT) perspective, we explore how ISD professionals engaging in the gig economy develop NTS by following grounded theory methodology. Our results are threefold: first, we identify crucial NTS for gig workers. Second, we uncover how these NTS are developed in different phases of adapting to working on gig economy platforms. Third, we reveal several strategies for thriving in the gig economy. Based on our findings we develop a process model of non-technical skill development and discuss this model in relation to implications for gig economy literature and practice. Collapse

Abstract: This study aimed to identify and explain the mechanism underlying decision-making behaviors adaptive to AI advice. We develop a new theoretical framework by drawing on the anchoring effect and the literature on experiential learning. We focus on two factors: (1) the difference between individuals’ initial estimates and AI advice and (2) the existence of a second anchor (i.e., previous-year credit scores). We conducted two longitudinal experiments in the corporate credit rating context, where correct answers exist stochastically. We found that individuals exhibit some paradoxical behaviors. With greater differences and no second anchor, individuals are more likely to make adjustment efforts, but their initial estimates remain strong anchors. Yet, in multiple-anchor contexts individuals tend to diminish dependence on their initial estimates. We also found that the accuracy of individuals was dependent on their debiasing efforts. Collapse

Abstract: In an era of globalization, it is commonly assumed that multicultural experiences foster leadership effectiveness. However, little research has systematically tested this assumption. We develop a theoretical perspective that articulates how and when multicultural experiences increase leadership effectiveness. We hypothesize that broad multicultural experiences increase individuals’ leadership effectiveness by developing their communication competence. Because communication competence is particularly important for leading teams that are more multinational, we further hypothesize that individuals with broader multicultural experiences are particularly effective when leading more versus less multinational teams. Four studies test our theory using mixed methods (field survey, archival panel, field experiments) and diverse populations (corporate managers, soccer managers, hackathon leaders) in different countries (Australia, Britain, China, America). In Study 1, corporate managers with broader multicultural experiences were rated as more effective leaders, an effect mediated by communication competence. Analyzing a 25-year archival panel of English Premier League soccer managers, Study 2 replicates the positive effect of broad multicultural experiences using a team performance measure of leadership effectiveness. Importantly, this effect was moderated by team national diversity: soccer managers with broader multicultural experiences were particularly effective when leading teams with greater national diversity. Study 3 (digital health hackathon) and Study 4 (COVID-19 policy hackathon) replicate these effects in two field experiments, in which individuals with varying levels of multicultural experiences were randomly assigned to lead hackathon teams that naturally varied in national diversity. Overall, our research suggests that broad multicultural experiences help leaders communicate more competently and lead more effectively, especially when leading multinational teams. Collapse

Abstract: In an increasingly complex and dynamic world, young executives need certain soft skills to be forearmed for the challenges of their job. The need for training of these personal skills in higher education is recognized among the business and information systems engineering (BISE) society. Yet, existing approaches often integrate the development of soft skills implicitly, usually without quantitively measuring the impact on students. However, an initial literature review identified a demand for an explicit and systematic integration of personal skills in basic lectures. We present an approach that systematically integrates the training of personal skills in a basic BISE lecture for first-semester students. To exemplify this approach, we describe the integration of the selfleadership strategy self-observation in a lecture on process modeling. Our research project follows the Design Science Research methodology. The outlook previews the completion of the first design cycle by describing the planned evaluation and further research ideas. Abstract: Despite participating in a growing number of tournaments, but can e-sports players continuously learn and improve? This question is deeply connected with experiential learning theory since players could acquire experience through repetitive participation but with increasingly smaller marginal returns. Observational learning is touted as a complementary learning mechanism by drawing on external sources of knowledge (or others) to accelerate learning progress. This study hence advances a dynamic and integrated research model that scrutinizes the moderating influence of peer-and rivalbased observational learning on the relationship between experiential learning and team performance. Analyzing data gathered on 8,410 teams and 29,078 players in e-Sports games, we reveal that peer-based observational learning attenuates the negative effect of experiential learning on players' incremental absorptive capacity, whereas rival-based observational learning reinforces the negative relationship between experiential learning and players' incremental absorptive capacity. Players' incremental absorptive capacity, in turn, enhances team performance. Collapse

Abstract: Online configuration tool kits present attractive opportunities for creating customized offers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relevance of both the TAM (Technology Acceptance Model) and the experiential learning theory to understand how configuration contributes to provide value for end users. The qualitative survey shows that the TAM needs to be adapted to the case of configurators by measuring both perceived usefulness (PU) of the configured product and PU and ease of use of the configurator itself. The study shows the relevance of experiential learning theory as an antecedent of the TAM. A model summarizing our observations is proposed and discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Whether, and to what extent, employees learn from their failure experiences remains an unresolved issue for practitioners and scholars alike. On the one hand, failure provides individuals with opportunities for learning, whereas on the other hand, failure can also trigger defensive reactions that stifle learning. The present study expands experiential learning theories by incorporating the social context, thus offering a more comprehensive understanding of employee learning from failure. Specifically, we propose that team contexts that are psychologically safe and exhibit a well-developed transactive memory system provide important socioemotional and informational resources, enabling individual employees to seize the learning opportunities inherent in failure. Analysis of archival data on individual failure and subsequent performance in the domain of workplace creativity from 218 employees working in 42 teams supports our hypotheses. Employees are more likely to learn from their failure experiences if they work in teams with medium-to-high levels of psychological safety. Under these conditions, individual learning from failure is further stimulated by a well-developed transactive memory system. Our results also demonstrate the behavioral pathway linking failure experiences to subsequent outcomes. Interview data from 28 employees further illustrate the processes underlying these findings.
