Abstract: The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) forces incumbent firms to reshape their organizational structures toward platform ecosystems. However, prior research lacks concrete insights about how incumbent firms can foster value co-creation to become ecosystem orchestrators. In particular, it only sheds little light on the complex challenges incumbents face in designing and governing IoT platform ecosystems. In response, we present a single case study describing how the departments of Robert Bosch GmbH, a leading IoT company, overcame these challenges in three dimensions-IoT ecosystem, IoT platform, and value co-creation. We tie in our research with the existing body of literature, identify four prevailing tensions in ecosystem establishment, and provide actionable design and governance recommendations to resolve them. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI), like many technological innovations before it, promises to revolutionize organizations. However, implementing AI in organizations is not as simple as it may appear. This exploratory research aims to unearth barriers to the implementation of AI in organizations. The methodology is based on a ranked-order Delphi study with 18 AI experts. By comparing our results with previous research on barriers to implementation of other information systems and to conceptual and practitioner literature on AI implementation, our findings underscore specific AI implementation challenges for organizations. Barriers to AI implementation fall under three main categories: (1) a lack of organizational capabilities related to data; (2) a lack of individual competencies related specifically to AI; and (3) generic implementation barriers previously observed in implementation research that persist with this innovation. While academia and the media make liberal use of the term “technology pivot,” they rarely align themselves to Ries’ foundational conceptualization. Recent research suggests that a more granulated conceptualization of technology pivots is required. To scientifically derive a comprehensive conceptualization, we conduct a Delphi study with a panel of 38 experts drawn from academia and practice to explore their understanding of “technology pivots.” Our study thus makes an important contribution to advance the seminal work by Ries on technology pivots. Abstract: This study examines the relationship between the background of an organization’s top information systems executive or chief information officer (CIO) and what a CIO does. It provides a somewhat different picture of the much discussed relative merits of a CIO’s background. Findings indicate that a technical background has little relationship to what the CIO does once they become CIO. Where they are hired from, however, does relate to reporting line, business focus, and how and with whom they spend their time once hired. Abstract: The continuous nature of digital innovation presents a particularly challenging process for organizations to manage. We propose that IT governance helps to maintain the required balance of control and flexibility over IT resources by determining the appropriate decision rights and mechanisms for approving and managing this continuous digital innovation process. We use a Delphi study to examine the direction of influence, effectiveness, and ease of implementation of 34 IT governance practices in the oil and gas industry. We find that relational mechanisms are perceived as more effective and easier to implement than structures and processes, and we identify a minimum baseline of IT governance practices to foster continuous digital innovation. The results of this exploratory study suggest that IT governance plays an integral role in increasing an organization's capacity to successfully innovate digitally. Collapse

Abstract: Big data analytics is a fast-evolving phenomenon shaped by interactions among individuals, organizations, and society. However, its ethical implications for these stakeholders remain empirically underexplored and not well understood. We present empirical findings from a Delphi study that identified, defined, and examined the key concepts that underlie ethical issues in big data analytics. We then analyze those concepts using stakeholder theory and discourse ethics and suggest ways to balance interactions between individuals, organizations, and society in order to promote the ethical use of big data analytics. Our findings inform practitioners and policymakers concerned with ethically using big data analytics and provide a basis for future research. Collapse

This research strand has produced output of highly theoretical but also of practical value by combining rigor and relevance. As for all practically relevant research areas, it is important to align future research agendas and efforts with practitioners’ current and expected future priorities. In order to provide insights on the challenges which decision makers in large corporations face, we surveyed sourcing managers from Germany’s 500 largest corporations and the 50 largest financial services firms. We interviewed a panel of experts to identify high priority topics and added trends from contemporary outsourcing research. Based on this list we conducted two Delphi studies in 2012 and 2015 and asked senior managers to prioritize the topics. Collapse

Abstract: Phishing, or the practice of sending deceptive electronic communications to acquire private information from victims, results in significant financial losses to individuals and businesses. The first goal of this study is to identify situational and personality factors that explain why certain individuals are susceptible to such attacks. The second goal is to test those empirically, along with previously identified factors, to explain the likelihood that an individual will fall victim to a phishing attack. We employed the Delphi method to identify seven personality factors that may influence this susceptibility (trust, distrust, curiosity, entertainment drive, boredom proneness, lack of focus, and risk propensity). Our regression model included these as well as variables examined in previous studies. We find that emails sent from a known source significantly increase user susceptibility to phishing, as does a user's curiosity, risk propensity, general Internet usage, and Internet anxiety. In post hoc tests, we also find that trust and distrust can be significant predictors of susceptibility and that this significance is dependent on the characteristics of the message. © 2017 The OR Society. Abstract: Selecting an appropriate cloud service provider (CSP) is one of the most important challenges affecting sourcing performance. Although cloud computing (CC) relies on the principle of information technology outsourcing (ITO), it remains unclear if selection criteria for ITO provider hold true. Hence, the purpose of this research is to identify the most important criteria for the selection of cloud service providers (CSP). We do this by conducting a Delphi study which includes 16 cloud service decision makers across different cloud service models, company sizes, and industry types. Our results show consensus on CSP selection criteria and identify functionality, legal compliance, contract, geolocation of servers, and flexibility as top five CSP selection criteria. From a theoretical perspective, we demonstrate that results from ITO research hold true for CC research as differences in delivery model and arrangement between ITO and CC will be considered. Practitioners like CSP and cloud decision makers get guidance from our findings to conduct optimal cloud service investments. This is the first study which provides a comprehensive view on relevant criteria for CSP selection. Collapse
