Abstract: Contemporary organizations widely use agile software development to react to unpredictable changes in their business environment. Due to the success of agile methods in contexts similar to the agile sweet spot, organizations have been applying them on a larger scale. However, maintaining oversight in large-scale agile development remains a problem. Metrics can tackle this problem by increasing transparency, but organizations have struggled with their adoption. Furthermore, extant research on large-scale agile development lacks publications investigating metric challenges and success factors. Against this backdrop, we conducted an expert interview study with 23 experts from 13 organizations. The most mentioned challenges are data collection challenges, lack of metric usefulness, and metric calculation challenges. On the other hand, the most occurring success factors are context-dependent metric adoption, implementing an agile metric management process, and ensuring understanding of the metric purpose. Abstract: Although Fogg’s ideas of persuasive technologies are widely accepted, few attempts have been made to test his ideas, particularly in a team context. In this article, we (1) theoretically extend Fogg’s ideas by identifying contexts in which virtual teams are more likely to use persuasive technologies; (2) empirically measure technology visualness, a factor that likely makes technologies more or less persuasive; and (3) assess the association between the use of persuasive technologies, judgment shifts, and forecast performance in a real-world virtual team context. We identify visual representation technologies (VRTs) as a class of technologies used by virtual teams to select, transform, and present data in a rich visual format. We propose that such technologies play a persuasive, as well as diagnostic, role in virtual team decisions. Over a three-year period, we examine the daily chat room discussions and decisions of a virtual team that makes smog forecasts with large economic and health consequences. We supplement regression models of field data with an experiment, interviews with team members, and analyses of imagery processing and group cohesion in team language use. Experiment results show that, relative to non-VRTs, the use of a VRT in a forecasting task increases imagery processing. Field data results show that team members increase their use of VRTs during chat room discussions when initial team consensus is low and the environment is more exacting. Greater use of VRTs in team discussions relates to greater shifts in the initial to final consensus forecasts of the team and greater odds of the team shifting its forecast policy to issue a smog alert. Increased use of VRTs is associated with lower forecast bias but is not significantly associated with forecast accuracy. VRT use is also associated with greater imagery processing and increased group cohesion, as shown through language use. Collapse

Abstract: Social media and the interactive Web have enabled human traffickers to lure victims and then sell them faster and in greater safety than ever before. However, these same tools have also enabled investigators in their search for victims and criminals. We used system development action research methodology to create and apply a prototype designed to identify victims of human sex trafficking by analyzing online ads. The prototype used a knowledge management approach of generating actionable intelligence by applying a set of strong filters based on an ontology to identify potential victims. We used the prototype to analyze a data set generated from online ads. We used the results of this process to generate a revised prototype that included the use of machine learning and text mining enhancements. We used the revised prototype to identify potential victims in a second data set. The results of applying the prototypes suggest a viable approach to identifying victims of human sex trafficking in online ads. Collapse

Abstract: Since the underutilization of technology often prevents organizations from reaping expected benefits from IT investments, an increasing body of literature studies how to elicit value-added, post-adoptive IT use behaviors. Such behaviors include extended and innovative feature use, both of which are exploratory in nature and can lead to improved work performance. Since these exploratory behaviors can be risky, research has directed attention to trust in technology as an antecedent to post-adoptive IT use. In parallel, research has examined how computer self-efficacy relates to post-adoptive IT use. While such research has found that both trust and efficacy can lead to value-added IT use and that they might do so interdependently, scant research has examined the interplay between these antecedents to post-adoptive IT use. Drawing on the Model of Proactive Work Behavior with a focus on its predictions about trust and efficacy, we develop a research model that integrates trust in technology and computer self-efficacy in the post-adoption context. Our model suggests that the two concepts are interdependent such that trust-related impacts on post-adoptive use behaviors unfold via computer-related self-efficacy beliefs. Contemporary tests of mediation on data from more than 350 respondents provided support for our model. Hence, our findings begin to open the black box by which trust-related impacts on post-adoptive behaviors unfold, revealing computer self-efficacy as an important mediating factor. In doing so, this study furthers understanding of how, and why, trust matters in post-adoptive usage, enabling strategic change management by elucidating the “fit” between technological characteristics and post-adoptive usage. Abstract: In this article, we add to the growing body of recent theoretical literature on usage, which remains fragmented. We propose a new concept emerging from our work – expectable use – as a dispositional facet of IT usage that may evolve over time, depending on training and context. This facet of usage represents the user’s disposition, or inclination, to use any IT (digital devices, software, etc.) pro-actively and in a self-determined fashion; it includes affective, cognitive and behavioral elements that result from both individual and group factors. With a classic grounded theory stance, we use mixed data and techniques, both qualitative and quantitative, to conceptualize, define, and model this new variable; we develop a quantitative index to assess it at a given moment in time. As a result of our work, we also propose that expectable use should significantly explain effective use and utilization. Collapse

Abstract: We present ontological meta-analysis and synthesis as a method for reviewing, mapping, and visualizing the research literature in a domain cumulatively, logically, systematically, and systemically. The method highlights a domain’s bright spots that have been heavily studied, the light spots that have been lightly studied, the blind spots that have been overlooked, and the blank spots that have not been studied. It highlights the biases in a domain’s research; the research can then be realigned to make it stronger and more effective. We illustrate the method using the emerging domain of public health informatics (PHI). We present an ontological framework for the domain, map the literature onto the framework, and highlight its bright, light, and blind/blank spots. We also present detailed analyses using the ontological maps of dyads and triads. We conclude by discussing how (a) the results can be used to realign PHI research, and (b) the method can be used in other information systems domains. Collapse

Abstract: Instant messenger technologies have become a common place for collaborative work and group decision support. Managers need to understand the potential impact of using IM in an organization. This paper contributes to the literature on instant messaging and primary task performance by theorizing and empirically testing how the interruption frequency of IM could intertwine with the social characteristics of IM communication and jointly influence user task performance and perceived workload. Using experimental design, we found that the effect of interruption on primary task completion time is dependent upon the hierarchical level of the message sender. Interruptions from a supervisor were found to reduce primary task completion time whereas interruptions from a peer increased primary task completion time. On the other hand, interruptions from a supervisor aggravated the negative impact of interruptions on task quality. Thus, it may be important for members and leaders of group decision teams to be more careful in the use of instant messaging with their peers and subordinates. Collapse

Abstract: Distributed Software Development involves a number of different business models. Most of the companies, when searching for external solutions in other countries (offshoring), usually have two main options: offshore outsourcing (contracting services with an external organization) and internal offshoring (contracting with a wholly owned subsidiary). Both models have been studied for a long time, and indicate the need for a great collaboration among the stakeholders to succeed in distributed development. For this reason, in this paper we compare offshore outsourcing and internal offshoring from the viewpoint of three management levels: strategic, tactical and operational. We present findings from a case study conducted in five multinational companies. The findings are presented in terms of aspects identified to improve the performance in offshore software development, and were analyzed based on two dimensions – challenges and patterns of evolution. Abstract: Developing robust and less complex models capable of coping with environment volatility is the quest of every data mining project. This study attempts to establish heuristics for investigating the impact of noise in instance attributes data on learning model volatility. In addition, an alternative method for determining attribute importance and feature ranking, based on attribute sensitivity to noise is introduced. We present empirical analysis of the effect of attribute noise on model performance and how it impacts the overall learning process. Datasets drawn from different domains including Medicine, CRM, and security are employed by the study. Using proposed technique has practical implications by supporting building low volatile, high performance predictive models prior to production deployment.
