Abstract: A considerable number of contributions at the intersection of social media platforms and social entrepreneurship has been witnessed over the past decade. The multi-disciplinary nature of current literature necessitates inte­ grative insights on the topic. We thus undertake a two-pronged approach – bibliometric analysis followed by systematic review – to map the extant literature in a structured, objective, and quantitative way. We contribute to the literature as we (i) offer a classification of the literature in three clusters, namely ‘social media platforms, social collaboration and social marketing’, ‘social media platforms and crowdfunding, and ‘social media plat­ forms and crowdsourcing’; (ii) analyze recent research development in each cluster, methodological develop­ ment, countries co-authorship and evolution of research in the area; and (iii) propose a conceptual framework -accompanied by research propositions- that provides an overview of the literature at the intersection of social media platforms, various social entrepreneurial practices and their influence on the social enterprise perfor­ mance. Our review culminates with numerous impactful research avenues for scholarly progression in the area. From a practical standpoint, this review integrates scattered findings into one body, allowing the practitioners and policymakers to discern the role of social media platforms in dealing with emerging societal problems and increasing operational efficiencies of social enterprises (SEs). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review of its kind, offering unique perspectives at the nexus of social media platforms and SE’s performance. Collapse

Abstract: Hedonic information consumption (HIC) refers to the consumption of information for non-task-oriented purposes such as entertainment or pleasure. With the explosive growth of information availability through online channels such as social media, HIC has become a common and growing phenomenon; however, most information systems research to date has focused on factors surrounding information consumption for utilitarian rather than hedonic purposes. In this paper, we take an initial step to inform theory in this area by applying a NeuroIS lens to explore HIC behavior. We postulate that information is more likely to be hedonically consumed when it is appraised as interesting, and that certain characteristics of the information involved in HIC, namely its novelty and valence, play a role in determining its interestingness. Moreover, we hypothesize that HIC is driven by the neurobiological reactions that take place in response to information novelty and valence. We report the results of a behavioral and an fMRI experiment designed to measure the relationship between these information dimensions and neu­ rocognitive responses in the context of a popular social media platform. Our results provide preliminary evidence for differential processing patterns related to novelty and valence that can inform ongoing theory building surrounding HIC behaviors. Collapse

Abstract: Data analytics (DA) is a growing technique to generate knowledge of and to raise responsiveness to marketplace, yet relatively few studies clarified its framework and to examine its effects on marketing actions. This study builds a DA framework based on sense-and-respond perspective and practices and accordingly examines their impact on marketing agility and the mediating effects of market knowledge specificity. We conduct in-depth interviews and surveys to measure the new framework. Results from 198 observations confirm the new frame­ work and indicate that the DA constructs have positive but different effects on marketing agility and the mediation of market knowledge specificity. Abstract: Despite increased empirical attention, theory on bots and how they act to disseminate information on social media remains poorly understood. Our study leverages the conduit brokerage perspective and the findings of a multiple case study to develop a novel framework of algorithmic conduit brokerage for understanding information dissemination by bots and the design choices that may influence their actions. Algorithmic conduit brokerage encompasses two intertwined processes. The first process, algorithmic social alertness, relies on bot activity to curate and reconfigure information. Algorithmic social alertness is significant because it involves action triggers that dictate the kinds of information being searched, discovered, and retrieved by bots. The second process, algorithmic social transmission, relies on bot activity to embellish and distribute the information curated. Algorithmic social transmission is important because it can broaden the reach of information disseminated by bots through increased discoverability and directed targeting. The two algorithmic conduit brokerage processes we offer are unique to bots and distinct from the original conceptualization of conduit brokerage, which is rooted in human activity. First, since bots lack the human ability of sensemaking and are instead fueled by automation and action triggers rather than by emotions, algorithmic conduit brokerage is more invariant and reliable than human conduit brokerage. Second, automation increases the speed and scale of information curation and transfer, making algorithmic conduit brokerage not only more consistent but also faster and more extensive. Third, algorithmic conduit brokerage includes a set of new concepts (e.g., action triggers and rapid scaling) that are specific to bots and therefore not applicable to human conduit brokerage. Abstract: Inclusive growth ensures that economic growth directly serves the welfare of lower income and excluded groups of society while focusing on profitability and financial success. Inclusive growth research in management and innovation studies has been supported by the UN, WEF, OECD and World Bank. Digital technologies, digital innovation, and digital entrepreneurship can be critical drivers of growth, productivity, and ultimately, poverty alleviation among marginalized and excluded communities. Yet, there are very few IS studies that utilize an inclusive growth lens and examine the role that digital platforms can play. This paper addresses this gap and adopts a single, revelatory case study approach to explain the process of creation and management of a platform-driven ecosystem and development of capabilities for inclusion of a community of waste collectors in India. Abstract: With the ubiquity of social media usage and influence, the phenomenon of virality—that is, large-scale diffusion and sharing of an online post—has received considerable scrutiny. Research on virality is of primarily two types. Content-based research focuses on how content characteristics influence virality, whereas creator-based research uses characteristics of the creator of the content to study virality. Through this research note, we aim to draw attention toward a relatively ignored set of constructs—the interactions between content characteristics and creator characteristics. We propose a typology of content features and content message on one hand and creator features and creator history on the other. We argue that adding nuanced content–creator interactions to the nomological network for virality will add conceptual richness and improve predictive validity of future studies. We demonstrate this by running models, with and without the interactions, on a data set of nearly 800,000 posts from Twitter. We find that many of these interactions are significant, improve goodness of fit by 20%, provide clues about contextual factors in virality, and boost predictive power by 12%. Our results and subsequent discussions of the findings hope to spur more research on content–creator interactions in understanding virality. Collapse

Abstract: Social Media Networks (SMN) are a priority area in higher education for improving student-centered collaborative learning. Despite this, students are not fully leveraging the learning capabilities that SMN offers. Therefore, understanding how students can effectively use SMN for collaborative learning is a pertinent question. This requires contextualizing effective use. To do so, we draw on affordance theory and identify relevant SMN affordances such as collaboration, communication, content sharing, and selfpresentation. Given the social nature of SMN, we further investigated the role of social capital on SMN use for collaborative learning. We conducted a case study of undergraduate students who collaborate using SMN. We identified that both actualizing SMN affordances and the level of social capital among students influence their perception of attaining collaborative learning goals. Overall, we extend effective use studies developing and demonstrating its value in a new context and draw on a different theoretical foundation for its conceptualization. Collapse

Abstract: The rise in social media and the number of applications and platforms that one can use to engage with others online about social issues such as political discourse, social segregation, and academics has raised valid concerns among researchers. Researchers would benefit from a valid instrument to measure individuals’ social media activity in order to thoroughly investigate these profound issues. Accordingly, we design, deploy, and validate a new survey instrument focused on social media activity. We test the model’s validity from various perspectives (internal, construct, convergent, etc.) to create a reliable instrument for researchers. The instrument distinctively draws from the theory of planned behavior and social identity theory and, thereby, provides a strong theoretical underpinning to social media activity’s dimensions. Abstract: Information systems (IS) research has primarily focused on explicit perceptions, attitudes, and intentions of which users are largely aware. We argue that this view may be too narrow. We extend it by presenting the concept of implicit attitude, which is as a stable subconscious evaluation of an IS that is developed a priori, stored in memory, and triggered with limited or no awareness and intentional effort when users are exposed to system-related stimuli. We further discuss the theoretical aspects of implicit attitude toward IS and document a set of guidelines regarding a technique for implicit attitude measurement: the implicit association test (IAT). We further present an overview of the FreeIAT software package and offer a practical example and configuration of the IAT, which includes its administration and scoring. Overall, this tutorial builds methodological foundations for future inquiries into the role of implicit processes in IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Human’s decision making is not necessarily always planned; their unplanned behaviour—determined by natural personality traits—also contributes to the decision making process. In this study, we investigate factors related to planned and unplanned behaviour to understand why people share political content in online social media. Based on an online survey of 257 social media users, our results demonstrate that the factors representing both planned (i.e., perceived social recognition and altruistic motivation) and unplanned behaviour (i.e., extroversion and impulsiveness) affect people’s political content sharing behaviour. Our study understands that sharing political content is not like sharing other forms of content such as tourist attractions—the former can provoke serious punishment in some countries. Accordingly, trait impulsiveness is negatively associated with political content sharing behaviour. We also found that collective opinion moderates people’s planned behaviour, but not their unplanned behaviour. In other words, personality traits are unaffected by others’ opinions, but traits that humans can control can be shaped by others’. Collapse
