Abstract: Information systems (IS) strategizing is particularly challenging for established organizations because of their historical conditions. The question of how established organizations can effec­ tively manage their historical conditions in IS strategizing remains under-explored. To address this question, we conducted a case study tracing the history (1960–2020) of an established or­ ganization in the building and construction industry. Through the analysis, we found four sys­ tems: accounting management system, business communication system, knowledge management system, and community collaboration system, as the historical conditions that formed an IS imprint, which was later managed and reproduced during IS strategizing. Using the imprinting lens, we developed an understanding of: (1) the formation of the IS imprint at the organizational foundation; and (2) the reproduction of the IS imprint, considering imprint-as-resource and imprint-as-constraint during IS strategizing. We contribute to the literature by providing an un­ derstanding of how historical conditions inform IS strategizing in the long term and by applying the imprinting lens to uncover the process through which an IS imprint is strategically managed and reproduced beyond the founding phase. The insights developed from this study are trans­ ferable to similar organizational contexts for managing historical conditions in IS strategizing. Collapse

Abstract: By integrating a resource dependence perspective with a complementarity view, this article investigates how online visibility affects the performance of hotels, through user-generated reviews and their presence on Internet portals. Our core argument is that when firms have gained a positive reputation from user-generated reviews, they should reduce their asymmetric dependence on Internet portals. Using a unique panel dataset of 276 small and medium-sized hotels from 2012 to 2014, we have found that good online visibility and the presence on multiple Internet portals are complementary conditions for the profitability of a hotel, and that the impact on profitability, due to the number of Internet portals on which firms are visible, is negative in the case of a poor reputation and leads to diminishing marginal returns in the case of a positive reputation. Abstract: This study furthers investigation into exactly how Social CRM (S-CRM) is different from traditional CRM, and models the interrelationships between its capabilities. It is underpinned in dynamic capabilities theory, to ex­ plain how social media, as a resource all organizations use, can lead to differing performance outcomes. It is underpinned in seminal research into traditional CRM, but which does not cater for the disruptive nature of social media. We outline how S-CRM is a second-order dynamic capability consistng of a set of first-order in­ tegrative dynamic capabiliies that, when properly interrelated, lead to performance outcomes. We particularly model the role of S-CRM front- and back-office technology capabilities, customer engagement initiatives, and social information processes in driving customer relationship performance. Findings show that S-CRM is dif­ ferent from traditional CRM in a range of ways in the front- and back-offices, and provide a framework for researcher and managers in information systems and marketing to operate at strategic and tactical levels within S-CRM, while being congisant of both. Abstract: This article presents a name disambiguation approach to resolve ambiguities between person names and group web pages according to the individuals they refer to. The proposed approach exploits two important sources of entity-centric semantic information extracted from web pages, including personal attributes and social relationships. It takes as input the web pages that are results for a person name search. The web pages are analyzed to extract personal attributes and social relationships. The personal attributes and social relationships are mapped into an undirected weighted graph, called attribute-relationship graph. A graph-based clustering algorithm is proposed to group the nodes representing the web pages, each of which refers to a person entity. The outcome is a set of clusters such that the web pages within each cluster refer to the same person. We show the effectiveness of our approach by evaluating it on large-scale datasets WePS-1, WePS-2, and WePS-3. Experimental results are encouraging and show that the proposed method clearly outperforms several baseline methods and also its counterparts. Collapse

Abstract: The European health care system faces massive challenges due to different influences such as an aging population, multi-morbidity and an innovation-sceptical industry. Above all, hospitals are in the focus of interest, given their central importance and networking of the supply system. Due to a lower availability of resources, but at the same time increasing demands and expectations on the quality of care, hospitals are under particular pressure to optimise. Digital technologies and information systems promise valuable potential along the patient pathway with regard to increasing efficiency and improving the quality of care. This paper provides a structured literature review on the digitisation of the patient's pathway and closes the research gap to a holistic view. As part of a quantitative empirical research study, 130 German hospitals were surveyed regarding their digital potential. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the current state of digital documentation and communication, as well as the identification of digitisation and integration in hospitals. The study shows interesting results regarding digital potentials, particularly concerning the internal and external communication of hospitals. Collapse

Abstract: Inter-organizational information systems (IOIS) offer many potential benefits to organizations, and IOIS adoption has increased in the last few decades. However, IOIS adoption varies significantly across different contexts, and little research has investigated how contextual factors affect IOIS-adoption variances at the inter-organizational (IO) level in depth-particularly from a multilevel perspective. This paper proposes a novel multilevel framework to analyze what combinations of contextual factors at the national, industry, inter-organizational, and organizational levels influence IOIS-adoption variances at the inter-organizational level. We present an in-depth, exploratory case study of the Indonesian grocery industry that identified three inter-organizational configurations between manufacturers, distributors, and retailers with IOIS-adoption variances. We found that the combinations of multilevel contextual factors varied for each configuration and, thus, explain the IOIS-adoption variances we observed at the IO level in a nuanced and holistic way. We argue that our multilevel framework may help scholars avoid contextual fallacy by encouraging them to examine the influence of higher-level factors on IOIS-adoption variances at the IO level and to avoid the atomistic fallacy that results when they make the wrong assumption that IOIS adoption at the organizational level implies adoption at a higher level. Abstract: Digital transformation is currently one of the most prominent topics in information systems research. In this context, existing work mainly focuses on the digitalization of business models and impacts on economy or society, representing a macro perspective on digital transformation. However, with the transformation of business models also come significant IT-induced changes of underlying processes and eventually workplace environments. In this paper, the term “digital workplace transformation” is introduced and corresponding success factors investigated, thereby adding a micro perspective to the ongoing research stream on digital transformation. Driven by facets of self-determination, it will be shown for an organization in the wholesale industry, that enabling employees to feel autonomous, competent and connected in the future workplace environment is not only vital for their expected performance but also expected well-being. Abstract: Recent research on scientific collaboration shows that distributed interdisciplinary collaborations report comparatively poor outcomes, and the inefficiency of the coordination mechanisms is partially responsible for the problems. To improve information sharing between past collaborators and future team members, or reuse of collaboration records from one project by future researchers, this paper describes systems that automatically construct a knowledge base of the meetings from the calendars of participants, and that then link reference to those meetings found in email messages to the corresponding meeting in the knowledge base. This is work in progress in which experiments with a publicly available corporate email collection with calendar entries show that the knowledge base population function achieves high precision (0.98, meaning that almost all knowledge base entities are actually meetings) and that the accuracy of the linking from email messages to knowledge base entries (0.90) is already quite good. Abstract: Timely reporting of rare infectious disease cases to the public health system, especially after identification at laboratories, is essential to initiate quick and effective public health response. To ensure that the public health reporting system is appropriately monitoring the rare infectious diseases under surveillance, it is recommended to have a regular assessment of timeliness, especially after the rare infectious case is confirmed. This study aimed to evaluate the timeliness of data reported to the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS), a public health reporting system in Ohio, for managing rare infectious diseases. In a cross-sectional analysis of rare infectious disease reporting data in four local health jurisdictions (LHJs) in the state of Ohio, wide delays were found between various reporting steps, particularly when the laboratories were not using the electronic method of reporting, and the delay observed was mainly at the hospital level and at the LHJ level. This study highlights the supply chain nature of information transfer and calculates the delay at various interacting points of the information supply chain system. The results establish that a centralized approach with an electronic disease reporting system conveys information faster than traditional reporting channels (decentralized approach). Delays of the decentralized approach are isolated at various stakeholder levels and with respect to various types of rare infectious diseases for better understanding of the information supply chain system for managing rare infectious diseases. Abstract: This paper investigates the case of shipments of containers with avocados from farmers in Africa to grocery store shelves in the European Union. We find 3 predominant challenges to containerized shipping that effectively become trade barriers: international trade cost, lead time uncertainty, and security risks. We use activity theory to describe, understand, and analyze the shipping activity in the international trade ecosystem with focus on physical objects and their related information. We find that the shipment becomes problematic and can be characterized as a runaway object in the heterogeneous and multiple organizational setting of international trade. Our analysis of shipping reveals (1) inefficient collaboration across loosely coupled activity systems and (2) fragmented information infrastructures. We propose the solution of Shipping Information Pipeline, a shared information infrastructure, thus facilitating collaboration in containerized shipping and contributing to lowering trade barriers. Shipping Information Pipeline can significantly improve containerized shipping resulting in estimated potential benefits of up to 4.7% growth in global GDP. Collapse
