Abstract: Managers who oversee cybersecurity policies commonly rely on managerial encouragement (e.g., rewards) and employee characteristics (e.g., attitude) to drive compliant behaviour. However, whereas some cybersecurity initiatives are perceived as reasonable by employees, others are viewed as a ‘waste of time’. This research introduces employee judgements of cybersecurity legitimacy as a new angle for understanding employee compliance with cybersecurity policies over time. Drawing on theory from the organisational legitimacy and cybersecurity literature, we conduct a three-wave survey of 529 employees and find that, for each separate wave, negative legitimacy judgements mediate the relationship between management support and compliance, as well as between cybersecurity inconvenience and compliance. Our results provide support for cybersecurity legitimacy as an important influence on employee compliance with cybersecurity initiatives. This is significant because it highlights to managers the importance of not simply expecting compliant employee behaviour to follow from the introduction of cybersecurity initiatives, but that employees need to be convinced that the initiatives are fair and reasonable. Interestingly, we did not find sufficient support for our expectation that the increased likelihood of a cybersecurity incident will moderate the legitimacy-policy compliance relationship. This result suggests that the legitimacy perceptions of employees are unyielding to differences in the risk characteristics of the cybersecurity incidents facing organisations. Collapse

Abstract: Social referral reward programs (SRRPs) aim to incentivize existing customers to recommend a product or service to others. Based on the reward threshold, we classify social referrals into two categories: singletasking social referral (SSR) and multi-tasking social referral (MSR). Considering that MSR involves multiple responders, we explore how to design an effective reward mechanism in this new context. Our primary interests in outcomes include users' willingness to recommend and their continuous referral intentions. Drawing from fairness theory and loss aversion theory, we propose three reward models based on the keeping percentage of rewards obtained, i.e., keep-it-all (KIA), discounted keep-it-all (DKIA), and all-or-nothing (AON). We designed an experiment to test the hypotheses regarding the effects of reward types on referral intention and continuous intention. This study will provide important implications for research and practice in designing an effective reward mechanism in MSR. Collapse

Abstract: The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has not only improved people’s quality of life but also raised concerns about information privacy. Although several studies have been conducted regarding information privacy concerns, there has not been sufficient discussion of the information privacy trade-off behavior in the IoT environment. Because previous studies only indirectly measured the information privacy trade-off behavior, the understanding of the behavior itself or its cause is limited. To address this issue, this study explored information privacy trade-off behavior in more depth using a large-scale sample and two-step analysis. Both panel data (23,724 samples for three years) and cross-sectional data (350 samples) were used in the analysis. The analysis results confirmed the existence of the information privacy trade-off for IoT users. Furthermore, it was found that the trade-off is associated with the social value of IoT devices and that men with IoT experience predominantly have strong trade-off behavior. Collapse

Abstract: Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshape many aspects of human life creating new opportunities for value creation but at the same time posing significant threats. This paper posits that as AI systems increasingly influence societies, their development and use need to be responsible and aligned with human rights. Multiple principles and guidelines for responsible AI have been proposed during the last few years. These principles are frequently presented as lists with little coherence and no theoretical basis. This paper draws from Rawls´ "justice as fairness" theory to propose a hierarchical framework of ten interrelated principles for responsible AI. This framework can be used as a roadmap for organizations towards increasing their maturity for developing, deploying and managing AI responsibly. Collapse

Abstract: Although information systems (IS) success has been given much attention in IS literature, failure has received lesser attention. This study empirically validates a model of digital service failure for consumers by integrating three dimensions from Tan’s failure model and one dimension from DeLone and Mclean’s Information Success model. The factors have been mapped to Expectation Disconﬁrmation Theory (EDT). Experiential survey approach has been used to collect primary data from information systems users who have experienced digital service failure. Structural equation modeling (SEM) has been used for model testing and validation to measure the impact of information, system, functional and service failure of digital service on end users. The ﬁndings suggests that information, functional, system and service failure has an impact on the consumers through the outcome, process, cost and user satisfaction of digital services. Collapse

Abstract: Security research on the employees’ expressive motives in committing computer-related deviant behavior is limited. In this research, drawing on the appraisal tendency framework (ATF), we examine how employees’ emotions (anger vs. fear) and perceived sanctions influence their computer-related deviant behaviors in the workplace. Our empirical results show that employees who experienced anger were more likely to commit computer-related deviant behavior mediated by perceived informal sanctions. In contrast, employees who experienced fear were less likely to commit computer-related deviant behavior mediated by perceived formal and informal sanctions. The results provide important guidance for organizations to improve the effectiveness of deterrent controls. Collapse

Abstract: In recent years, the development of online health-consultation platforms has drawn significant research attention to online patient–doctor relationship development, particularly in developing countries, where there are limited health care resources for each patient. However, online interactional unfairness in patient–doctor relationship development has been largely overlooked in the context of information and communication technology (ICT). This study proposes and tests a model that examines how online interactional unfairness (ie, interpersonal unfairness and informational unfairness) influences online patient–doctor relationship quality and the contingent roles of a doctor’s professional seniority and a patient’s disease severity. Using archival data with 83,553 observations from a leading online health-consultation platform in China, this study employed rare-event logistic regression to test the model. The results show that online interpersonal unfairness and online informational unfairness have negative and positive effects on relationship-quality incentive, respectively, in the Chinese health care context and that a doctor’s professional seniority and a patient’s disease severity strengthen the link between unfairness perceptions and relationship-quality incentive. This study advances the knowledge of online patient–doctor relationship development in ICT-based health care in China and provides practical insights for online health care stakeholders for managing unfairness in the health care context. Abstract: This research-perspective article reviews and contributes to the literature that explains how to deter internal computer abuse (ICA), which is criminal computer behavior committed by organizational insiders. ICA accounts for a large portion of insider trading, fraud, embezzlement, the selling of trade secrets, customer privacy violations, and other criminal behaviors, all of which are highly damaging to organizations. Although ICA represents a momentous threat for organizations, and despite numerous calls to examine this behavior, the academic response has thus far been lukewarm. However, a few security researchers have examined ICA’s influence in an organizational context and addressed potential means of deterring it. However, the results of these studies have been mixed, leading to a debate on the applicability of deterrence theory (DT) to ICA. We argue that more compelling opportunities will arise in DT research if security researchers more deeply study its assumptions and more carefully recontextualize it. The purpose of this article is to advance a deterrence research agenda that is grounded in the pivotal criminological deterrence literature. Drawing on the distinction between absolute and restrictive deterrence and aligning them with rational choice theory (RCT), this paper shows how deterrence can be used to mitigate the participation in and frequency of ICA. We thus propose that future research on the deterrent effects of ICA should be anchored in a more general RCT, rather than in examinations of deterrence as an isolated construct. We then explain how adopting RCT with DT opens up new avenues of research. Consequently, we propose three areas for future research, which cover not only the implications for the study of ICA deterrence, but also the potential motivations for these types of offenses and the skills required to undertake them. Abstract: Criminal organizational insider computer abuse (ICA) research has focused on factors that influence either ICA intentions, or actual behavior during the ICA process. However, we argue that this research has not correctly conceptualized the decision-making processes involved in ICA. Thus, our first aim is to demonstrate this opportunity by leveraging the rational choice perspective (RCP) from criminology. The RCP advances an "event" stage, in which choices are made leading up to and during the criminal act. However, the RCP also acknowledges a preceding "initial involvement" stage, which encompasses those factors that lead an individual to consider participation in crime. RCP explains that if, during the initial involvement stage, an individual becomes motivated and decides that future criminal behavior is the most suitable course of action, then he or she will have reached a state of "readiness." It is only after an individual has become readied, and at a later time, does the individual make event decisions in the perpetration of a specific crime. Consequently, extant ICA research has overlooked consideration of why-prior to the crime-an individual initially considers engaging in such criminal activity in the first instance. Notably, this consideration should not to be conflated with intentions. We argue that there needs to be a clear distinction between those motivational factors that would lead to the consideration of such engagement at the initial involvement stage, and those factors that would lead an individual at the event stage to perpetrate a crime. We thus propose a revised version of the extended security action cycle (ESAC), which reflects these criminal decision-making stages. Moreover, we provide a means through which to identify and understand the relationship among those factors that may motivate an individual during the initial involvement stage by drawing on the life course perspective (LCP). With a focus on time, context, and process, the LCP offers a framework in which four key principles are inscribed. Through examples drawn from the LCP and white-collar crime literature, we illustrate how these principles can provide a basis for conceptualizing factors that motivate ICA and open up new avenues for future research/theory development. Abstract: Following an indigenous approach and fairness theory, we develop a theoretical model to investigate when and how authoritarian leadership will improve tacit knowledge sharing (KS). Drawing on survey data from 309 Chinese employees, we examine whether authoritarian leadership will affect procedural fairness (PF) perception and interactional fairness (IF) perception, which in turn, will affect tacit KS; and examine whether leader renqing orientation (LRO) will moderate these mediation processes. Our data demonstrate that authoritarian leadership is negatively related to IF perception, which is positively related to tacit KS. Moreover, authoritarian leadership significantly increases tacit KS intention through PF perception only when LRO is high. Authoritarian leadership significantly decreases tacit KS intention through PF perception and IF perception only when LRO is low. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Collapse
