Abstract: The fake news phenomenon has exposed the vulnerability of individuals and societies to information manipu lation in social media. We conducted two studies to understand why people believe in fake news and propose a simple IT intervention method that can help in detecting disinformation. In Study 1, we designed a laboratory experiment using behavioral and neurophysiological tools to test two competing theories in the disinformation literature. Both behavioral and neurophysiological evidence support the classical reasoning account hypotheses and reject the motivated reasoning predictions, suggesting that the lack of actively open-minded thinking (AOT) is linked to the belief in fake news. An intervention method was designed (i.e., performance feedback) that reduces individuals’ overconfidence in their ability to detect fake news and encourages more analytical thinking. In Study 2, we conducted an online survey presenting participants with their performance feedback halfway through the survey. The results show that the intervention increased participants’ performance by 14%. Our study contributes to the research on fake news by providing behavioral and neurophysiological evidence in support of the classical reasoning account. It also offers a simple and practical method that increases users’ ability to detect fake news. Collapse

Abstract: The ubiquity of information technology makes it possible to provide individuals with personalized, context-specific, and timely feedback at low marginal cost. This allows for highly scalable behavioral interventions that can support behavior change even for frequent, habitual, and incidental behaviors. Despite the well-documented potential of feedback interventions in improving personal and societal outcomes, the associated theoretical insights -in particular for real-time feedback on everyday behaviors -are sparse. To this end, this research-in-progress paper proposes a conceptual model to formalize cause-effect relationships between feedback interventions, the antecedents of behavior, and resulting behavioral changes by integrating important concepts from feedback intervention theory and other behavioral theories. Moreover, this paper outlines the planned validation of the model and research hypotheses with an empirical field study. Ultimately, the results are expected to inform the development of (future) information systems for behavior change by holistically explaining behavioral mechanisms associated with feedback interventions. Abstract: With the growing popularity of online Q&A communities, motivating continuous high-quality knowledge contribution is a key challenge for sustainable community development. Although feedback mechanisms are designed to meet this challenge, there is still no comprehensive understanding of the impact of feedback. Most previous research focuses on feedback valence (i.e., positive or negative) but ignores potential differences associated with the expression of feedback (i.e., textual or nontextual). To address this research gap, we classify community feedback into four types on the dimension of expression and valence to examine their effects on continuous high-quality knowledge contribution. Using a longitudinal knowledge contribution dataset collected from a leading online Q&A community, our empirical results with a series of robustness checks show that (1) positive nontextual feedback is negatively correlated with the continuous contribution of high-quality knowl edge, whereas the other three types of feedback generate positive effects; (2) textual and nontextual positive feedback generates significantly opposite effects, but there is no statistically significant difference between textual and nontextual negative feedback. The additional analyses generate a deeper understanding of feedback effects, including disassembling feedback effects on the knowledge quantity and quality, and verifying the moderating effects of user reputation values on feedback effects. This study extends research concerning feed back and continuous knowledge contribution and generates important managerial implications for the online Q&A community. Collapse

Abstract: Many consider electricity-consumption feedback applications a critical technology in alleviating energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In this paper, following the design science paradigm, I examine a design taxonomy of electricity-consumption feedback applications. I relied on an integrative theoretical framework and literature review to propose a comprehensive taxonomy for salient design elements of electricity-consumption feedback applications. Using a survey method, I collected data from general public to evaluate preferences for and relative importance of the design elements. I found a preferred set of design elements for the feedback applications. The results could serve as a basis to evaluate the design of existing electricity-consumption feedback applications and to help in studying the influence that design elements have on beliefs and behaviors related to individuals’ electricity conservation. Abstract: While telemonitoring technology is widely used in treatment of patients with chronic diseases, our understanding of how it influences patient-related outcomes is limited. Drawing upon feedback intervention theory, the paper develops a model that examines how a telemonitoring feedback ecosystem (patient, telemonitoring technology, care provider) is related to patient behavioral outcomes. More precisely, we study the cascading effects of two types of technology feedback (medical and compliance alerts) on the provision of three types of feedback (outcome, corrective, and personal) given by care providers, and how the feedback in turn is related to patient adaptation and ultimately to calls to 911. Using generalized linear mixed modeling, we tested our hypotheses with longitudinal data from 212 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and/or chronic heart failure (CHF) over 26 weeks. Our results show that medical alerts had a positive association with all three types of provider feedback. By contrast, compliance alerts had curvilinear relationships with corrective and personal feedback. Our results also show that outcome feedback and personal feedback were associated with increases in patient adaptations. Patient adaptation was negatively related to the odds of calling 911. Interestingly, we found a significant negative interaction between outcome and corrective feedback and patient adaptation. Finally, our results show that while the frequency of feedback decreased over the life of the program, the amount of adaptations increased over the same period, which suggests that patient self-management improved over time. By examining a telemonitoring-based ecosystem with two stages of feedback, our study contributes to the chronic disease management literature as well as to other contexts where monitoring technologies deliver feedback that is mediated by a third party. Abstract: The internet of things (IoT) generally refers to the embedding of computing and communication devices in various types of physical objects (e.g., automobiles) used in people’s daily lives. This paper draws on feedback intervention theory to investigate the impact of IoT-enabled immediate feedback interventions on individual task performance. Our research context is a smart testsimulation service based on internet-of-vehicles (IoV) technology that was implemented by a large driver-training service provider in China. This system captures and analyzes data streams from onboard sensors and cameras installed in vehicles in real time and immediately provides individual students with information about errors made during simulation tests. We postulate that the focal smart service functions as a feedback intervention (FI) that can improve task performance. We also hypothesize that student training schedules moderate this effect and propose an interaction effect on student performance based on feedback timing and the number of FI cues. We collected data about students’ demographics, their training session records, and information about their simulation test(s) and/or their official driving skills field tests and used a quasi-experimental method along with propensity score matching to empirically validate our research model. Difference-in-difference analysis and multiple regression results support the significant impact of the simulation test as an FI on student performance on the official driving skills field test. Our results also supported the interaction effect between feedback timing and the number of corrective FI cues on official test performance. This paper concludes with a discussion of the theoretical contributions and practical significance of our research. Collapse

Abstract: The right information can foster behavior change towards energy conservation – given that the receiving individuals pay attention to the feedback provided and integrate the information in their decision making. As human information processing capabilities are limited, intervention designers need to choose content carefully to avoid information overload. Based on energy consumption and survey data collected in field trial, this article investigates the attention paid to different elements of the user interface (N=426) and establishes a relationship to actual energy conservation. We find that self-reported attention paid to content explains only very little of the measured behavior change (explanatory power of approx. 3%). The article is a first step towards better understanding the black box of feedback interventions in the energy sector. The results highlight the importance of collecting real-world data on behavior – rather than relying on selfreported user perceptions – in the resource consumption context and beyond. Collapse

Abstract: Interface preferences are influenced by switching costs, including cognitive switching costs of thinking and task performance. In this research, we use feedback intervention theory to predict that feedback can have psychological effects that override the lock-in effect of cognitive switching costs on interface preference. To demonstrate this effect, we use normative feedback, which compares a user’s task performance to the performance of others. This focuses attention on the user’s self-concept and away from task performance. We use a hedonic information systems (IS) interface – an online game – as feedback valence should have a stronger effect on preferences for hedonic IS as opposed to utilitarian IS. Hedonic IS are preferred for their enjoyment value, as well as their productivity, and positive feedback should be more enjoyable than negative feedback. Results from an online experiment that manipulated the presence of feedback and feedback valence, for a sample of 482 users, support our hypotheses. The theoretical and managerial implications of these results are discussed. Collapse
