Abstract: Recruitment is a critical activity for companies, and the research community has also shown significant interest in examining technology recruitment. Companies often communicate how they value their employees along with job requirements to potential candidates in a bid to attract them. However, there is an overall lack of understanding of how candidates react to such information and how their motivation toward the job changes with such online communication. Although there is substantial work that examines the decision-making process of managers who do technical hiring, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of work that investigates the decision-making process of technical candidates. The broad research question studied is how including certain content in online communication about a technical job opportunity may (de)motivate heterogeneous candidates differently in applying for the job. We theorize the underlying process of how including certain content in online job communication may influence candidates’ propensity to apply and their minimum acceptable salary increase if they were to join the company. Additionally, we capture mediating variables that influence the effect of different online content on candidates’ propensity to apply and on candidates’ minimum acceptable salary increase. Abstract: Climate change and its consequences are among modern societies' most critical challenges. To that end, cities have focused on using information technology in their climate mitigation efforts in smart cities. Considering the magnitude of the problem and its impact on our societies, the need for building climate-resilient smart cities is crucial. In this study, we aim to understand how smart cities can achieve climate resilience. Conducting an exploratory field study and using the urban climate resilience framework as a theoretical lens, we suggest that smart cities can leverage the potential of open data and citizen engagement to reach climate resilience. In particular, our results show that building climateresilient cities requires structural changes in citizen engagement processes and climate considerations. To that end, open data services and tools can be used to improve citizen engagement processes and develop more sustainable smart city solutions. Collapse

Abstract: Marginalized communities globally encounter grand challenges such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and sustained livelihoods. Several initiatives to address these complex, global problems have resulted in fragmented solutions. Recognizing this, there have been several calls for the study of responsible innovation (RI) to address grand challenges. Digital platforms such as AirBnB, Uber and so forth have now become commonplace and are known to generate economic value but also face criticism for being exploitative and exclusive. Only a handful of studies show how similar platforms can innovate responsibly to serve marginalized communities by generating simultaneous economic and social value. To address this gap, our study examines the cases of two platforms that orchestrated ecosystems consisting of individuals from marginalized communities, government agencies, and other entities to provide physical, digital and societal solutions based on principles of RI. We contribute to the RI and IS literatures to show how RI solutions can be fostered through digital platforms to address grand challenges. The article provides empirical evidence of all four dimensions of the RI framework—anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness - and their operationalization through digital platforms. This research lays the foundation for future studies at the intersection of RI and digital platforms literature. The study also provides practice insights on developing digital platform solutions for marginalized communities to address grand challenges and is useful to policymakers to formulate appropriate interventions. It pushes the theoretical and practice boundaries of our understanding of RI and digital platforms. Collapse

Abstract: Enterprise architecture (EA) is a systematic approach used for designing and implementing changes in technological systems and processes to improve organizational performance and align technology with business. This paper unpacks the process through which EA moves from strategic-level endorsement to diffusion across organizations. The insights provided are based on a longitudinal case study within the Norwegian hospital sector. An institutional work lens is adopted to analyze the purposeful activities carried out to introduce EA in Norwegian hospitals providing a granular view on diffusion. The paper provides a rich description of the institutional work employed by the key actors involved mapping them to different turns in EA's trajectory. Drawing from this analysis, we contribute to Information Systems literature with a conceptual model that illustrates how institutional work can mitigate the challenges of moving from the strategic-level endorsement of novelty to its diffusion and institutionalization smoothing downturns along the way. The findings indicate ways to facilitate the introduction of EA within complex organizations, providing insights for practitioners involved in EA initiatives, and advancing extant EA research through an institutional perspective. Abstract: Intelligent technologies are increasingly used to evaluate and monitor performance through implementing specific metrics such as Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Recently, scholars have called to better engage with intelligent technologies specific features and their production process, which otherwise remain black-boxed. We aim at developing greater insights into how practices enacted by different end-user's shape and reshape the production of KPIs in technological change initiatives. This research employs a critical, process oriented and performative view of power to emphasise both its negative and productive effects. We highlight the pursuing (push)-withdrawing (pull) dynamics which lie in iterative and recursive acts of power and resistance involving a range of actors who collectively, albeit inadvertently and differently, change the meanings technological outcomes perform. Finally, we show that technologies that might initially seem to fail can 'take off' through persistent and positive power effects. Collapse

Abstract: The curation of data is fundamental to their wider dissemination and use. This paper investigates the frames of workers who perform data curation in scientific contexts. We view data curation as a sense-making practice, where workers collaborate to disseminate meaningful data to a broad set of prospective users. Previous Information Systems investigations have suggested that data-related activities are dependent on workers' understanding of their local work context. We expand this with an evolving and longterm view. We use a stepwise-deductive induction method to examine how scientists understand the work involved in curating scientific data for public sharing. We draw on frames as the theoretical lens of the study that enables us to identify three data sharing frames -the object, curation, and aligning frames -as important frames that shape how scientists curate data for public sharing. Our analysis provides a deeper understanding of the nuances of managing scientific data for public access. Our main contribution is the articulation of an evolving and long-term view of how workers approach their tasks in getting data ready for long-term public use. Collapse

Abstract: Firms are increasingly adopting digital transformation as a strategic priority. However, the path to successful transformation remains uncertain for many organizations. This paper examines the establishment and evolution of competency centers in two case study organizations, historically used in enterprise systems, in addressing the complexity and challenges of digital transformation. The interactions within these competency centers are analyzed through assemblage theory to understand the emergent relations between heterogeneous parts (technology, people, and orga­ nization) and the dynamic processes of new configurations. The insights from this research show the critical role of the competency center in any enterprise system’s success and how it could continue playing a central role in future digital transformation initiatives. By providing a new lens to examine these issues, the assemblage theory provided a new theoretical perspective to the IS field and a new alternative empirical setting to the organizational literature. Abstract: The digital platform business model has evolved and become a dominant form of economic interaction worldwide. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) had to shift their business to platforms to survive in this new market. While existing studies show the positive side of SMEs' use of platforms, there has been little research on the dark side of their participation in the platform economy, particularly their high dependence on platforms. We conducted a qualitative study to examine the mechanisms of dependence and its repercussions on SMEs' performance. Our findings suggest that SMEs' dependence on platforms arises from high importance, low discretion, and limited substitutability. We also find that, beyond their dependence on single platforms, SMEs generally become dependent on an oligopolistic system of dominant platforms. This dependence heightens the power asymmetry between platforms and SMEs. We highlight major manifestations of this power asymmetry, including the platform's ability to restrict access to resources and to prioritize different stakeholders' interests in their ecosystem. Abstract: The proliferation of enterprise social media generates an ever-growing record of digital traces that provides ample opportunities to study the social making of organisations. Subsequently, we present the social fabric framework, which comprises a structured five-step approach for eliciting, interpreting, and representing the situated social idiosyncrasies and underlying patterns of the social making of organisations. The paper focuses on the application of the social fabric framework as a research method. However, the framework also lends itself to practice as a diagnostic tool that can detect emergent changes in the social fabric of an organisation as well as support organisational development and change. Moreover, by providing a vocabulary for articulating the social making of organisations, the framework can help organisation members reify their dispositions, make sense of the social dynamics, and enable a constructive discussion at the grassroots level about any controversy or aspiration. Abstract: The area of Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA) has repeatedly oscillated between more central, efficiency-oriented, professionalized approaches and decentral, agility-oriented, user-driven ones. This paper investigates whether and how to alleviate that tradeoff by combining an agility-oriented self-service analytics approach with the professionalization-driven DataOps concept: DataOps aims at transferring ideas from DevOps to the realm of analytics, namely a mutual integration of Development and Operations and a high degree of professionalization and automation. A case study with a series of interviews and a workshop led to insights into the viability of such a combination. These inspire a theoretical concept for capturing the economics behind the approaches that is considering the (opportunity) costs of the components "user agency" and "central control". The concept has been evaluated with representatives from the case study. Based on the results, I argue that the discussed combination can push BIA solutions towards fine-tuned federated environments.
