Abstract: While social media has been a popular subject of prior research, we know little about the conditions and the flows of action of social media use, including staying, discontinuance, and switching behavior. This makes it difficult to understand platform choices and usage patterns of social media services. Based on a flow-oriented theoretical approach, we conduct an exploratory qualitative research study with ten focus groups based on five popular social media services. We conceptualize a multidimensional perspective of social media use behavior. We identify four flows of action -"adjusting", "coextending", "fading out", and "intensifying"and develop a flow-oriented process model of social media service use. Our findings help to understand the broad spectrum of social media usage behaviors and motives, and provide new avenues for future research. Furthermore, we provide platform providers with insights to better understand the dynamics of social media services. Collapse

Abstract: The metaverse offers promising opportunities to enhance the experiences in virtual meetings. However, its limitations have led to the emergence of virtual hybrid meetings. This meeting format uses virtual conference rooms accessible via head-mounted displays (HMD) and 2D video interfaces. Given the limited research on virtual hybrid meetings, an exploratory approach is needed to determine key perspectives and dimensions. This short paper initiates a discussion on how hybrid meetings impact meeting experiences, focusing on employee collaboration. We also shed light on the role of user embodiment in shaping meeting experiences. Our early insights lay the groundwork for future investigations, which will explore how hybrid meetings can foster a sense of togetherness and boost well-being as well as group performance. Thereby, we support companies to implement metaverse meetings while addressing constraints such as cost and health concerns, ultimately enhancing meeting experience and productivity. Collapse

Abstract: As businesses increasingly use gamified mobile marketing campaign (GMMC) systems to engage mobile shop pers, gamification in m-commerce systems warrants more attention in both IS research and design practices. Inspired by peak-end theory, this study focused on the puzzling differences between user experience vs. memory and empirically examined the impact of different experience orders of cognitive load on user perceptions and behavioral intentions. Overall, the outcomes of this research suggest that appropriate applications of the peakend effect, moderated via users’ regulatory focus styles, can alleviate the negative mental utility imagery of users, reducing their perceived uncertainties and opt-out intentions from the GMMC. Important implications for research and practice are then discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Flow, the holistic sensation people experience when they act with total involvement, is a known driver for desired work outcomes like task performance. However, the increasing ubiquity of IT at work can disrupt employees' flow. Thus, the impact of IT-mediated interruptions on flow warrants more attention in research and practice. We conducted a NeuroIS laboratory experiment focusing on a typical office work task-an invoice matching task (i.e., matching customer payments to invoices). We manipulated interruption frequency (low, high) and content relevance (irrelevant, relevant) to study the impact of interruptions on self-reported flow, its dimensions, and high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV; calculated from electrocardiography recordings) as a proxy for parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activation. We found that content relevance moderated the relationship between interruption frequency and self-reported flow and that these results vary along flow dimensions. Content relevance also moderated the relationship between interruption frequency and PNS activation. Abstract: Organizations have been increasingly exploring storytelling as a valuable strategy to engage customers to increase their attention and retention. Social media platforms like Instagram have become essential tools for many brands to use storytelling through influencers. In this study, we explore the narratives constructed by digital influencers, as they play a crucial role in shaping their brand image and engagement with their audience. By analysing the narrative strategies used by digital influencers, we contribute to a deeper understanding of the role and impact of digital storytelling. We identify, illustrate, and discuss four narrative strategies: educating, evaluating, advising, and entertaining. Our study motivates further research to develop a detailed conceptual understanding of digital influencers and digital storytelling. Collapse

Abstract: Although intelligent learning systems provide new opportunities for personalizing learning activities, important design questions remain. To unleash the full impact of such systems, it is vital to examine how the use of Bayesian knowledge tracing can provide learners personalized learning activities and shape their flow experience, performance, and continuity intention. Further, this study explores the moderating role of a growth mindset on the relation between learning task adaptation and flow experience. I rely on electroencephalography to increase the internal validity of flow measurements. The study builds on Flow Theory and aims to empirically unveil the influence of an intelligent personalization of learning processes. The next step will be an experiment with 80 participants following the developed experimental design to evaluate flow experiences in intelligent learning systems. The results of this experiment aim to guide educational designers with prescriptive knowledge on how to design flow-like learning experiences in intelligent learning systems. Collapse

Abstract: The business value of investments in information technology/information system (IT/IS) has been the subject of active research over several decades. Even though a plethora of similar studies analyzing the impact of promised IT/IS investments on firm performance exists, the results, largely inconclusive, mostly concentrate on the developed countries. In this backdrop, and with an expected manifold rise in IT/IS investments in India in the coming years, an assessment of the relationship between investments and firm performance can be noteworthy. The study explores this important issue by analyzing the impact of IT/IS investments on the firm's performance in India based on data of around 6500 IT/IS investments during 2000-2016. We deploy a series of univariate and multivariate analyses and complement those with several robustness tests. Our principal findings indicate that IT/IS investments on the average in India have been mostly unsuccessful in impacting firm performance positively, in line with "productivity paradox" phenomenon previously documented in the U.S. and other markets. We substantiate our principal results using several robustness tests. We offer several possible explanations of our results spanning across both IS as well as finance literature and discuss the implications of future investment prospects for firms. The results highlight the need for adoption of caution by firms operating in emerging economies like India while considering future IT/IS investment decisions. These suggestions are likely to serve as a good reference point in other emerging economies as well. Collapse

Abstract: Driven by circumstances like the global pandemic many learners and educators realize the importance and value of self-regulated digital learning. To better support self-regulated learning, conversational agents have become more relevant. Conversational agents can act as tutor or as learning mate for learners. Although conversational agents have potential to better support self-regulated learning processes, challenges exist requiring implications about how to make these interactions more engaging and supportive. This study discusses the value of gamified conversational learning chatbots that use game elements to engage learners to guide researchers and practitioners to design conversational agents that effectively motivate learners and provide self-regulated learning at the same time. Therefore, we propose a systematically developed framework for gamifying educational conversational agents and contribute to theory by consolidating several theories about games, digital learning, and conversational agents and support practitioners by providing implications about what to care about when gamifying conversational agents. Abstract: China is one of the largest and fastest-growing markets for live streaming, and the purchase of virtual gifts in live streaming is the core for streamers and live streaming platforms in China to survive and thrive. Compared to western countries, live streaming in China highlights the lively social atmosphere and heated social interactions among streamers and viewers. This study develops a cultural context-sensitive model that contextualises the purchase of virtual gifts in live streaming in China. Specifically, we focus on the viewer's social experience and the social atmosphere in live streaming which have received limited attention yet. We introduce viewers' social perceptions with regard to the streamer and other viewers (ie, perceived proximity to the streamer and sense of belonging to the viewer crowd) and show how such social perceptions contribute to the development of flow experience, which subsequently leads to purchase intention. This study also reveals how such social perceptions can be shaped by the contextual setting consisting of the IT-related factors of live streaming (ie, responsiveness, two-way communication, social presence, and self-presentation) and the cultural characteristics of China (ie, social orientation and harmony). Our research offers both theoretical guidance for practitioners into cultivating viewers' purchase of virtual gifts in China's live streaming. Collapse

Abstract: Mixed reality technologies have the potential to provide students with an effective learning experience by bridging the gap between the digital and physical world. Mixed reality enables the user to see their real-world surroundings with virtual features overlayed in order to create a digitally enhanced experience. As we strategically move towards largescale integration of mixed reality technologies to maximize the learning affordances in the future, there is a need to understand the drivers of and barriers to students' learning in a mixed reality environment. We present in this paper a multi-site case study to evaluate the feedback from 223 students on their learning experiences after using Microsoft HoloLens, a mixed reality device, in their classroom. While we found that interactivity, immersion, and presence are the main drivers, the key barriers identified were difficulty using the device, accessibility issues, and the lack of flexibility. Affordances and fatigue are the two themes that evolved in this study. We recommend three design principles that will contribute toward designing mixed reality technologies to effectively build new embodied learning environments. Collapse
