Design process knowledge for crisis-driven information systems solutions: Insights on building digital resilience from an action design research study

Abstract: As global disruptions escalate, digital resilience (DR)—the capacity to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to external shocks by leveraging Information Systems (IS)—has become crucial for individuals and organisations confronting and managing unprecedented crises. This research advances understanding on how to develop DR, drawing on insights from an Action Design Research (ADR) study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our research explores a particular facet of DR: the capacity to manage exogenous shocks through the design of new IS solutions. We introduce the ADAPT framework, comprising five key enablers—Agility, Designation, Alignment, Participation, and Trust—recommended to support design teams developing IS solutions during and for crises. Our ADR project, which resulted in the creation of a telemonitoring system used by over 115 frontline healthcare workers to monitor the symptoms of more than 1000 COVID-19 patients, demonstrates the instrumental role these five enablers play in supporting a crisis-propelled IS design process that is urgent, resource-limited, and multi-partite. By presenting new design process knowledge and practical recommendations that guide crisis-driven IS design, we aim to equip design teams with the understanding they need to effectively navigate similar challenges in the future. We also hope to inspire and support IS researchers to apply their expertise in the design, deployment, and use of IS solutions to contribute to crisis-driven design endeavours that tackle the pressing and urgent challenges of our time. Abstract: Green bond markets promise to fight climate change by encouraging green investments. Yet, the real-world complexity of quantifying the green impact of sustainable initiatives might be exploited for greenwashing, thus threatening the entire market's credibility. Advances in business analytics research and practice hold the potential to untangle this complexity. This study aims to explore how one can engage with data to build the legitimacy of green bonds. In particular, we detail data-related needs, requirements, and challenges that are critical to take into account for designing relevant and effective information system artifacts that will support green bond markets. Through focus groups, interviews, and secondary data analysis, we identify capturing, contextualizing, and communicating green impact as core activities for bond issuers toward ensuring legitimacy for their green bonds. Based on these findings, we outline future research avenues and propose an initial set of research questions for the business analytics and, more broadly, information systems community. Collapse

Abstract: The emergence of the metaverse as a virtual world platform has opened up new possibilities for the use of immersive technologies in healthcare. This paper aims to explore the potential of the metaverse for healthcare and show how metaverse should be designed. We conduct a study based on design science research and derive design principles for the designing of a virtual environment for mental health counselling. We evaluate each of these design principles and describe how they can be applied in a practical solution. The results indicate that the metaverse holds significant promise for improving healthcare delivery and enhancing patient outcomes. Our study thus contributes to the emerging field of metaverse in healthcare by providing a design approach for the development of applications that can serve as a virtual environment for therapeutic sessions between medical therapists and patients. Abstract: The practice of information systems development (ISD) has changed during the past two decades from very structured approaches to agile ISD methods. However, in the literature many methods available for managing requirements-related risks follow a structured approach to ISD. Few, if any, available methods offer solutions that prioritize requirements risks for agile ISD projects based on recognizing requirements-related risks and patterns in order to mitigate these. To fill this gap in the literature, we apply the design science research methodology to develop an agile requirements risk prioritization method together with industry experts (n=54) in Finland and New Zealand in a multi-year study. The method was developed by applying contingency theory, and our study makes an artifactual contribution to the literature. The method helps practitioners prioritize the overall requirements-related risks for ISD projects.The remainder of the paper is structured as follows. First, we review relevant literature on ISD risk management and agile requirements risk prioritization. Then, we depict the applied DSR approach, and different qualitative research methods, to develop our method. Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly gaining importance for organizations due to its immense potential for value creation and growth. However, companies struggle to tap this potential, as many AI projects fail in the early stages because of lacking guidance and best practices. To shed light on how AI adoption and transformation can be approached and what challenges organizations face, we analyzed eleven organizations of varying sizes and industries. Drawn on these insights, we identify four transformation types distinguished by different AI transformation stages and journeys. Furthermore, we develop a 3D-Model to guide enterprise-wide AI change and propose concrete recommendations for action on each dimension. Our findings help practitioners navigate, manage, and (re)evaluate their AI strategy for an enterprise-wide transformation. Collapse

Abstract: A clinical decision support system (CDSS) is designed to assist health professionals in perioperative patient management. Robust CDSSs are vital to deliver enhanced healthcare services. Incorporating the latest advancements in digital technologies, mobile device based CDSSs are being introduced to healthcare settings at a considerable pace. However, given the nascency of this tech-health synergy, well-defined systematic approaches to be followed to design and develop mobile CDSSs to ensure developed technological solutions are of best fit-for-purpose, are lacking. To address this void, this study proposes an approach combining Task Technology Fit theory and Design Science Research Methodology, to guide the design and development of mobile CDSSs. The proposed approach is applied to a case study to design a mobile CDSS to assist perioperative optimization of surgery patients. The learnings from the case study are reported. Collapse

Abstract: Employees' nonwork use of information technology (IT), or cyberslacking, is of growing concern due to its erosion of job performance and other negative organizational consequences. Research on cyberslacking antecedents has drawn on diverse theoretical perspectives, resulting in the lack of a cohesive explanation of cyberslacking. Further, prior studies have generally overlooked IT-specific variables. To address cyberslacking problems in organizations, as well as research gaps in the literature, we used a combination of a literature-based approach and a qualitative inquiry to develop a model of cyberslacking that includes a 2×2 typology of antecedents. The proposed model was tested and supported in a three-wave field study of 395 employees in a U.S. Fortune-100 organization. This study organizes antecedents from diverse research streams and validates their relative impact on cyberslacking, thus providing a cohesive theoretical explanation of cyberslacking. This study also incorporates contextualization (i.e., IT-specific factors) into theory development and enriches the IS literature by examining the nonwork aspects of IT use and their negative consequences to organizations. In addition, the results provide practitioners with insights into the nonwork use of IT in organizations, particularly regarding how they can take organizational action to mitigate cyberslacking and maintain employee productivity. Abstract: Prior work on leadership in information systems development (ISD) teams has assumed that all developers are treated equally by their team leader and ignored the possibility that differentiated leader-member exchange (LMX) may be an important instrument for team leaders to influence self-organizing, agile ISD teams. We conducted a concurrent mixed methods inquiry to understand how LMX differentiation is associated with developer satisfaction in agile ISD teams and through which team processes agile ISD teams address LMX differentiation. We ran a multilevel, multistage survey of 1,894 software developers in 217 teams and an embedded case study of five ISD teams drawing on qualitative data from 40 interviews of developers and team leaders. Two focus groups (one with 10 developers and one with 10 team leaders) helped to substantiate the meta-inferences from the quantitative and qualitative studies. The results showed that LMX differentiation was positively associated with developer satisfaction, especially in teams with high-quality team-member exchange (TMX). We identify three team processes (i.e., collectivization of resources, visible appreciation of privileges, and freeing up leader capacities) that are enacted through agile ISD practices and allow ISD teams to leverage benefits from LMX differentiation for all their members.
