Abstract: ICT-induced legal and regulatory challenges, including security and privacy risks, are on the rise. Despite that, there is a dearth of research emphasizing the role of ICT laws and understanding its effect on the level of ICT diffusion and the well-being of a country. Drawing on Dror’s law and social change framework, and grounding the discussion on the literature on ICT diffusion, the perspective of perceived risk, Hofstede’s typology of national culture, and the technological determinism theory, this study (1) explores the effect of maturity of ICT laws in a country on ICT diffusion among its citizens and businesses; (2) understands how this relationship is contingent on the national cultural dimensions; and (3) explicates the role of ICT diffusion in promoting the well-being. The research model is examined using publicly available data from 83 countries, and the findings suggest that sound ICT laws are necessary for achieving a greater diffusion of ICTs and improving well-being. Abstract: In this study, we investigate the relationship between the occupational culture of information technology (IT) personnel and knowledge sharing in organizations. We suggest that some elements of IT occupational culture affect knowledge sharing among IT personnel and business end users. Drawing on cultural psychology, we present one possible approach through which IT occupational culture manifests through six elements of organizational structure (i.e., stories, symbols, power structures, control systems, and rituals and routines) and affects the knowledge-sharing process. In doing so, we better understand behaviors related to knowledge sharing and IT diffusion in organizations beyond the limitations of previous IT-diffusion studies. Collapse

Abstract: While IT integration is recognised as an important capability, the mechanisms through which it creates value and the contingencies that delimit its effectiveness are unclear – particularly, in the case of firms that deliver solutions embodying both products and services. We focus on IT vendors to investigate the effectiveness of IT integration capability with respect to three aspects of IT solution offerings: breadth, modularity and customisation. We find a complementarity effect between IT integration capability and management of the IT offer strategy: IT integration is fundamental regardless of whether the firm relies on customisation or a broad set of heterogeneous knowledge bases. However, when IT vendors adopt a modular design strategy, IT integration is made redundant and can be counterproductive. Collapse

Abstract: The proliferation of social commerce has changed customers’ purchase decision-making process. However, few studies have investigated the roles of social commerce factors on customers’ purchase decision-making. Based on the social learning theory, we develop a research model to examine how customers’ learning behavior along three main social commerce components (SCCs) affects customers’ attitude in both cognitive and affective dimensions and how such attitude determines customers’ purchase intention. The results from a survey of 243 actual users of social commerce websites suggest that cognitive and affective appraisals are the main predictors of purchase intention, with cognitive appraisal having a higher predictive power than affective appraisal. In addition, learning from forums and communities and learning from ratings and reviews have significant influences on both cognitive and affective appraisals, while learning from forums and communities plays a more important role in formulating affective appraisal and learning from ratings and reviews plays a more important role in determining cognitive appraisal. Contrary to our expectation, learning from social recommendations has no significant influence on either cognitive or affective appraisal. In summary, these findings provide a comprehensive understanding about customers’ purchase decision-making process and extend the application scope of social learning theory. The findings also provide social commerce managers guidance in designing more effective websites and allocating resources and efforts reasonably on different SCCs. Collapse

Abstract: The development of virtual reality (VR) glasses such as the Oculus Rift has made VR technologies available to the mass market. The rapid diffusion of VR glasses holds the potential to disrupt the way media is consumed. Yet little is known about their acceptance by consumers. This study seeks to explore the user acceptance of VR glasses, considering the specifics of hedonic information systems in consumer settings. Focusing on user personality, namely the users’ desire to escape reality, we developed a framework based on the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) and tested it in a laboratory study with 155 participants. The structural equation model results show that VR glasses’ ability to induce presence, a sense of being in another environment, is a key characteristic of the technology that influences the adoption. We found the users’ escapism tendency to be a distinctive user personality trait for determining the adoption of VR glasses. Our study provides insights into the adoption of technology in early diffusion stages and the role of technology characteristics and personality traits in adoption decisions. Finally, our findings have important implications for practitioners in the VR industry. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines the impacts of network effect strategies, namely network structure and technology complementarity, on mobile payment (MP) loyalty. Drawing on network effect and the dedication/constraint-based model, this study proposes that network structure and technology complementarity will reinforce perceived benefits (i.e., dedication factor) and switching cost (i.e., constraint factor), which in turn formulate MP loyalty. We conduct an online survey with 318 MP users to empirically validate the model. The key findings include (1) network structure is a formative construct with size, centrality, and capability dimensions, whereas technology complementarity is a multidimensional construct with platform-application, application-service, and service-strategy elements; (2) network structure and technology complementarity exerts influences on MP loyalty through the underlying dedication-based mechanism, i.e., perceived benefits, and constraint-based mechanism, i.e., switching cost. Abstract: Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a platform for innovation with high failure rates due to its complexity. In China, failure rates of ERP are also high, with key differences between China and Western countries in terms of development, cultural, and organizational structure. Even when Chinese firms successfully adopt ERP, many fail to assimilate ERP and consequently never experience the full benefits of the innovation. The purpose of this study is to examine the predictors of adoption versus assimilation in Chinese firms. The existing literature largely assumes a dichotomy of choices when implementing organizational innovations in business: technological evaluation and imitation. We argue that this dichotomy does not apply well to a Chinese ERP context. China has achieved tremendous success in manufacturing and industrial processes through technological leapfrogging offered by imitation. At the same time, Chinese firms are under increasing pressure to innovate. Therefore, we argue that forces of imitation and evaluation are likely both at play when Chinese firms adopt and assimilate innovations—including ERP. Accordingly, we examined how two behaviors, interorganizational social technology imitation and rational technology evaluation, influence Chinese organizations in adopting and assimilating ERP systems. Our findings suggest that both social technology imitation and rational technology evaluation are determinants of Chinese ERP adoption and assimilation. Hence, this study offers new ways for IT and innovation researchers to explore social behavior (i.e., imitation) in IT diffusion processes and to consider the merits or risks of such behavior alongside the conventional rational approach (i.e., evaluation). Abstract: a b s t r a c tEmploying the literature on IT governance and the structuration theory of technology assimilation, this research develops a conceptual model to examine decision execution mechanisms of IT governance in post-adoption stages of CRM diffusion, i.e. CRM use, impacts on business processes, and impacts on firm performance. While the literature mainly addresses the forms and contingencies of IT governance structures for decision making, we focus on IT governance mechanisms for decision execution, that is, the role of top management, business managers and IT managers in post-adoption stages of technology diffusion and how these groups are held accountable for their role. We conceptualize decision execution mechanisms of IT governance as including two dimensions: vertical advocacy from top management and horizontal coordination between business and IT managers. Decision execution mechanisms are assumed to facilitate CRM use and value creation. We analyze a dataset of 82 Chinese firms to examine the model and associated hypotheses. Our results show that: (1) decision execution mechanisms, including both vertical advocacy and horizontal coordination, significantly contribute to the three stages of CRM diffusion; (2) vertical advocacy has a notably greater effect on CRM use and firm performance gains than horizontal coordination, which has a greater effect on process gains. (3) CRM use creates operational and strategic benefits in customer-oriented business processes, which further improves firm performance. These findings have important implications for understanding how IT governance shapes the diffusion of CRM technology. Collapse

Abstract: The adoption of an organization-wide system, such as an enterprise system (ES), has often been mandated by organizational management, which may not necessarily motivate users to proactively explore the system's features and subsequently apply pertinent features that best support their job tasks. Anchoring on self-determination theory, this research investigates the antecedents and consequences of users' intrinsic motivation to explore ES features. We propose two organizational levers (i.e., autonomous job design and socialization tactics) that the management could exercise to trigger intrinsic motivation, thereby leading to improved ES feature exploration. Intrinsic motivation is manifested by hedonic motivation and normative motivation, whereas ES feature exploration is conceptualized as a dual-dimensional outcome reflected by cognitive behavior (exploratory usage) and positive affect (exploration satisfaction). Through a two-stage survey of 127 organizational users in China, we find general support for our research model. We further observe significant moderating effects of prevention focus on the association between organizational levers and intrinsic motivations. Beyond demonstrating how organizational users respond to different organizational levers, this research examines a broader, enduring challenge, which is to determine how organizational users can be induced to be intrinsically inspired to innovatively harness implemented information systems.
