Abstract: Augmented and virtual realities (AR/VR) have matured significantly in the past decade. As these devices have matured, security has become an important consideration. Despite the ability to completely re-create interfaces in the AR/VR space, the most common tool for authentication remains the traditional password. Passwords have many known weaknesses, and have been blamed for many high profile cyberattacks, leaving much to be desired. This study, following the design science approach and utilizing a cognitive walkthrough, explores the formative validity of a novel authentication artifact designed for AR/VR space. We report on our results, and identify that the proposed artifact exhibits good usability and security properties based on the feedback of technological and cybersecurity specific experts. Collapse

Abstract: An emerging trend in healthcare delivery is that of patient-centered medicine which includes empowering patients through shared decision-making in their medical care. The use of information technology is a key enabler for empowering patients and supporting patient-centered care. The patient decision aid is one tool for getting patients more involved in their care. However, existing patient decision aids make generalized assumptions about their users and fail to accommodate the variability of individual information needs and decision-making preferences known in the literature. In this paper, we investigate patient attributes that influence patient decision-making preferences and present a framework for the design of individualized patient decision aids. The proposed framework is instantiated in the context of end stage renal disease and was tested to evaluate its effectiveness. Collapse

Abstract: Rich, diverse cybersecurity data are critical for efforts by the intelligence and security informatics (ISI) community. Although open-access data repositories (OADRs) provide tremendous benefits for ISI researchers and practitioners, determinants of their adoption remain understudied. Drawing on affordance theory and extant ISI literature, this study proposes a factor model to explain how the essential and unique affordances of an OADR (i.e., relevance, accessibility, and integration) affect individual professionals' intentions to use and collaborate with AZSecure, a major OADR. A survey study designed to test the model and hypotheses reveals that the effects of affordances on ISI professionals' intentions to use and collaborate are mediated by perceived usefulness and ease of use, which then jointly determine their perceived value. This study advances ISI research by specifying three important affordances of OADRs; it also contributes to extant technology adoption literature by scrutinizing and affirming the interplay of essential user acceptance and value perceptions to explain ISI professionals' adoptions of OADRs. Abstract: Research in information systems includes a range of approaches that make varied contributions in terms of knowledge, understanding, and practical developments. In these days of “fake news” and spurious Internet content, scholarly research needs to be able to demonstrate its validity: Are its findings true and its recommendations correct? We argue that there are fundamental validation criteria that can be applied to all research approaches despite their apparent diversity and conflict. These stem from current views on the nature of truth and the related but wider concept of correctness within philosophy. There has been much debate about the nature of truth: Is it correspondence, coherence, consensual, or pragmatic? Current debates revolve around the idea of a pluralist view of truth—that there are different forms of truth depending on the context or domain. Related to truth is the wider concept of correctness: propositions may be true, but correctness can also be applied to actions, performances, or behavior for which truth is not appropriate. We develop a framework for research validity and apply it to a range of research forms including positivist, interpretive, design science, critical, and action oriented. The benefits are: (1) a greater and more explicit focus on validity criteria will produce better research; (2) having a single framework can provide some commonality between what, at times, seem like conflicting approaches to research; (3) having criteria made explicit should encourage debate and further development. The framework is applied to a variety of empirical papers employing varied research approaches. Collapse

Abstract: Research in information systems includes a wide range of approaches that make a contribution in terms of knowledge, understanding, or practical developments. In these days of “fake news” and vast amounts of spurious internet content, scholarly research needs above all to be able to demonstrate its validity – are its finding true, or its recommendations correct? However, empirical studies show that discussion of validity in research is often weak. In this paper we examine the nature of truth and relatedly correctness in order to construct a validation framework that can potentially encompass all the varied forms of research. Abstract: This paper examines the mechanism by which social media use impacts a citizen’s online political participation behavior. Using the lens of Downs’ Theory of political participation, we propose a model of political participation based on cost-benefit approach. Based on previous studies, we argue that Social Media use increases one’s social capital and reduces one’s cost of participation and thus increases one’s benefits of participating in online political activities. The results obtained confirmed our hypothesis about the impact of social media use on citizen’s social capital and in-turn their online political participation. Our results add to the existing literature on political participation and social media use by modeling the relationship between the two. The outcomes of study also have important implication for public organizations as it can help them to promote participation among people using social media. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: As competition online increases, website owners investigate ways in which they can attract and retain more users. One avenue is to reduce frustration and stress for the users. Furthermore, many website users are rushed when browsing for specific information on a website. To save time and prevent frustration, website owners should try to maximize information scent, that is, visual, audio, and semantic cues that are meant to lead or guide the user to his or her informational goal. This paper presents and tests a model to predict how information scent can reduce the amount of stress that consumers experience when seeking information under time constraints. The study also demonstrates the relationships between information scent, time constraints, stress, performance, and attitudes toward the website. Results demonstrate that high information scent is an important design goal for a website, and latent semantic analysis can be a useful tool for measuring scent. In addition, rather than an attribute of an overall site, the concept of scent is demonstrated to be dependent on both the website and the task(s) being performed by the user. This finding demonstrates that to maximize users’ satisfaction and ability to accomplish their goals, website designers need to determine what tasks users need to accomplish, and to make sure that the links on each page point clearly to the appropriate destination to meet those goals. The latent semantic analysis tool can provide an indication of strength and clarity of the links. Clear links gain even more importance when considering the time constraints of users. Measurable stress explains some of the variance in performance and attitudes. Collapse

Abstract: Non-work-related personal use of the Internet within organizations has received increased attention from scholars. We increase previous understanding of this phenomenon by proposing a novel model based on the theory of interpersonal behavior (TIB). The TIB includes previous researched constructs (i.e., attitudes, social influence, and intentions) as well as emotional factors, habits, and different sources of social influence. Our results (N=238) suggest that the model well predicts the use of the Internet at work for non-work purposes. Our results shed new light on the influence of habit, affect, role, and self-concept in the use of the Internet. Collapse

Abstract: Qualitative research is just as able as quantitative research to follow certain fundamental principles of logic in general and scientific reasoning in particular. Two such principles are the logic of modus ponens and the logic of modus tollens. In this essay, we frame different research approaches--positivist research, interpretive research, action research, and design research--in the forms of modus ponens and modus tollens. Three issues emerge from this framing and call into question how research is now conducted in the discipline of information systems. They are the issue of a common scientific basis, the issue of the fallacy of affirming the consequent, and the issue of summative validity. Both rigor and relevance in information systems research may be better achieved by attending to the three issues. Collapse
