Abstract: A well-known approach to managing and controlling workflows in organizations is the workflow management system (WFMS). Recently, approaches utilizing augmented reality headsets as WFMS front ends have been discussed, enabling higher efficiency, effectiveness, and usability for certain application scenarios. However, existing design-oriented approaches lack tangible guidance for implementation. A well-known approach to address such knowledge gaps is a reference architecture, which inter alia reduces development times and risks and facilitates collaboration between developers. Based on an existing tentative design theory for an augmented reality-based WFMS front end, we contribute a reference architecture containing an extended design theory, user interface design, and UML models for use cases, components, classes, and sequence flows. The reference architecture was successfully operationalized in a prototype and positively evaluated via a survey of respective users. Collapse

Abstract: Green information systems are often praised for their potential to foster sustainability in citizens’ daily lives and meet their needs. With this focus on citizens, districts that use smart technologies provide a litmus test, the results of which will indicate how to design smart green information systems that better meet the needs and desires of citizens. To date, however, guidelines on how to design such green information systems in urban areas or actively involve citizens in this process are few and far between. In recognition and remedy of this shortage, the study draws on the design science research paradigm to develop seven design principles for citizen-centric green information systems that can be used in sustainable smart districts. These principles are evaluated in 15 semi-structured interviews and a prototype of a mobile district app for a citizen-centric green information system is instantiated. By taking this citizen-centric perspective, the paper fosters the active involvement of humans in the design of sustainable urban environments. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) possesses the potential to augment customer service employees e.g. via decision support or solution recommendations. Still, its underlying data for training and testing the AI systems is provided by human annotators through human-in-the-loop configurations. However, due to the high effort for annotators and lack of incentives, AI systems face low underlying data quality. That in turn results in low prediction performance and limited acceptance by the targeted user group. Faced with the enormous volume and increasing complexity of service requests, IT service management (ITSM) especially, relies on high data quality for AI systems and incorporating domain-specific knowledge. By analyzing the existing labeling process in that specific case, we design a revised to-be process and develop a conceptual model from a value co-creation perspective. Finally, a functional prototype as an instantiation in the ITSM domain is implemented and evaluated through accuracy metrics and user evaluation. The results show that the new process increases the perceived value of both labeling quality and the perceived prediction quality. Thus, we contribute a conceptual model that supports the systematic design of efficient and interactive labeling processes in diverse applications of reinforcement learning systems. Collapse

Abstract: Community-based healthcare is a promising approach to tackling workforce shortage in healthcare, especially in the global south. Community health workers (CHWs) are lay cadres that bridge healthcare disparities by living in the community where they should provide basic health services, mainly through education. However, high attrition rates and underperformance of these health workers limit the scope of such programs. In addition, mobile health is not the hoped-for silver bullet to solve the two challenges. This paper examines two pilot projects using mobile health for non-communicable disease care from an empowerment perspective. We propose design knowledge of mobile health for the structural empowerment of CHWs. Furthermore, we evaluate their psychological empowerment by analyzing mobile health's intended and unintended consequences. Finally, our study demonstrates how empowering CHWs could help overcome the persisting challenges and lead to a sustainable and resilient health system. Collapse

Abstract: Maturity models are valuable management tools for assessing and managing capabilities and therefore creating a basis for their identification, prioritization, and further development. Numerous maturity assessment methods have been developed to support organizations in applying maturity models. However, these methods are mostly used for unique assessments and only provide a snapshot of the current state of capabilities and their maturity. Certainly, this does not reflect the continuous change of capabilities within dynamic organizational environments. Moreover, the systematic selection of suitable maturity models and the identification of the actions that should be targeted following the maturity assessment require more attention. To fill these research gaps, this study proposes the generally applicable Continuous Maturity Assessment Method (CMAM) that enables comprehensive and continuous maturity assessments. The CMAM comprises five steps that extend and advance existing principles of maturity assessment and can be implemented as an organizational routine. The rigorous development of the CMAM followed basic principles of the design science research methodology, including an evaluation of six organizations in different industry sectors and an extensive industrial case study. Abstract: Online customer feedback management plays an increasingly important role for businesses. Yet providing customers with good responses to their reviews can be challenging, especially as the number of reviews grows. This paper explores the potential of using generative AI to formulate responses to customer reviews. Using advanced NLP techniques, we generated responses to reviews in different authoring configurations. To compare the communicative effectiveness of AI-generated and human-written responses, we conducted an online experiment with 502 participants. The results show that a Large Language Model performed remarkably well in this context. By providing concrete evidence of the quality of AI-generated responses, we contribute to the growing body of knowledge in this area. Our findings may have implications for businesses seeking to improve their customer feedback management strategies, and for researchers interested in the intersection of AI and customer feedback. This opens opportunities for practical applications of NLP and for further IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Online learning has gained an increasingly important role at universities, schools, and companies, which was boosted by the pandemic to yet another level. Given that online teaching requires different skills compared to traditional teaching, educators face challenges when creating online learning. Research is looking at these challenges from various perspectives to provide guidance. However, the guidance provided is often not interactive or engaging, and thus does not motivate to explore possibilities in online learning more widely. This paper explores how to design virtual toolboxes to engage and guide educators when creating online learning. Conducting a design science research project, we propose theory-grounded design principles and instantiate them in an interactive toolbox. Our artifact is evaluated with educators from seven European universities to iteratively improve the design foundation. We contribute valuable design knowledge that enables researchers and practitioners to develop tools in the field of online learning. Abstract: Fake news has become omnipresent in digitalized areas such as social media platforms. While being disseminated online, it also poses a threat to individuals and societies offline, for example, in the context of democratic elections. Research and practice have investigated the detection of fake news with behavioral science or method-related perspectives. However, to date, we lack design knowledge on presenting fake news warnings to users to support their individual news credibility assessment. We present the journey through the first design cycle on developing a fake news detection service focusing on the user interface design. The design is grounded in concepts from the field of source credibility theory and instantiated in a prototype that was qualitatively evaluated. Abstract: With the ever-increasing societal dependence on electricity, one of the critical tasks in power supply is maintaining the power line infrastructure. In the process of making informed, cost-effective, and timely decisions, maintenance engineers must rely on human-created, heterogeneous, structured, and also largely unstructured information. The maturing research on vision-based power line inspection driven by advancements in deep learning offers first possibilities to move towards more holistic, automated, and safe decision-making. However, (current) research focuses solely on the extraction of information rather than its implementation in decision-making processes. The paper addresses this shortcoming by designing, instantiating, and evaluating a holistic deep-learning-enabled image-based decision support system artifact for power line maintenance at a German distribution system operator in southern Germany. Following the design science research paradigm, two main components of the artifact are designed: A deep-learning-based model component responsible for automatic fault detection of power line parts as well as a user-oriented interface responsible for presenting the captured information in a way that enables more informed decisions. As a basis for both components, preliminary design requirements are derived from literature and the application field. Drawing on justificatory knowledge from deep learning as well as decision support systems, tentative design principles are derived. Based on these design principles, a prototype of the artifact is implemented that allows for rigorous evaluation of the design knowledge in multiple evaluation episodes, covering different angles. Through a technical experiment the technical novelty of the artifact’s capability to capture selected faults (regarding insulators and safety pins) in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-captured image data (model component) is validated. Subsequent interviews, surveys, and workshops in a natural environment confirm the usefulness of the model as well as the user interface component. The evaluation provides evidence that (1) the image processing approach manages to address the gap of power line component inspection and (2) that the proposed holistic design knowledge for image-based decision support systems enables more informed decision-making. The paper therefore contributes to research and practice in three ways. First, the technical feasibility to detect certain maintenance-intensive parts of power lines with the help of unique UAV image data is shown. Second, the distribution system operators’ specific problem is solved by supporting decisions in maintenance with the proposed image-based decision support system. Third, precise design knowledge for image-based decision support systems is formulated that can inform future system designs of a similar nature. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation offers organizations opportunities to involve intrapreneurs, i.e., employees sharing the zeal of entrepreneurs, but innovating within organizational boundaries through the generation of new ideas. Despite organizations’ interest in exploiting their employees’ innovation potential, tools as digital intra­ preneurship platforms guiding and hosting this innovation process are limited and their design is challenging. Thus, we provide the results of an action design research project with an IT service provider and describe the iterative design process. The designed intrapreneurship platform is ingrained in the socio-technical system theory.
