Abstract: While the positive aspects of the flow state have been widely researched, the effects of being aware of this state and the negative consequences still need to be explored. The loss of awareness that flow state may bring can lead to the purchase of products that consumers afterward regret and want to return them. This research aims to understand flow consciousness’s effect on consumer post-purchase regret from a dual perspective (process and outcome regret). The relevance of these relationships is also examined by analyzing the differences between 2 groups: maximizers and satisficers consumers. Through a structural equation model based on covariances tested with EQS 6.4, the results show that flow consciousness generates process regret but not outcome regret. How­ ever, the differences found between the two groups are worth noting. The research sheds light on the effect of flow consciousness on regret and provides insight into the mechanism of product return through post-purchase regret. The theoretical and managerial implications for e-commerce retailers are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Remote work is becoming the “new normal”, and more people are working in the home office due to the COVID19 pandemic. Boundary management and the individual preferences to segment work and private life are a current topic of research as digital technologies have the potential to aggravate segmentation due to their invasive effect. In this context, we add to a current research stream on technostress, investigating technologydriven spill-over in a longitudinal study based on data assessed during the pandemic. The use of communica­ tion technologies leads to work-to-family stress due to the occurrence of techno-stressors interruptions, invasion, and overload. Differences between “segmenters” (people with a strong wish for separation) and “integrators” (who rather integrate life domains) were found. They experience techno-stressors differently in dependence on their technology use. Our paper offers interesting theoretical insights into boundary transcending effects of technology use. Recommendations for employers on how to shape the “new normal” are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Social media apps like TikTok have influenced the daily lives of billions of users. Such apps are forms of network goods and subject to so-called network externalities. They offer a social utility that increases with the number of app users. The social utility can be divided into a strong-tie utility (STU) and weaktie utility (WTU) as it may emerge from strong ties (e.g. close friends) and weak ties (e.g. friends of friends) respectively. To investigate their influence on the usage behaviour more closely, we develop a research model and conduct an online experiment (N=291) for collecting data for seven popular social media apps. The results prove that strong and weak ties can influence users in two ways: providing utility and exerting social pressure. While the level of these effects varies for the tested apps, the utility has a generally greater influence on the intention to use. Collapse

Abstract: Online health communities (OHCs) represent a popular and valuable resource for those seeking health information, support, or advice. They have the potential to reduce dependency on traditional health information channels, increase health literacy and empower a broader range of individuals in relation to their health management decisions. Successful communities are characterized by high levels of trust in user-generated contributions, which is reflected in increased engagement and expressed through knowledge adoption and knowledge contribution. However, research shows that the majority of OHCs are composed of passive participants who do not contribute via posts, thereby threatening the sustainability of many communities and their potential for empowerment. Despite this fact, the relationship between trust and engagement, specifically the trust antecedents that influence engagement in the OHC community context has not been adequately explained in past research. In this study, we leverage social capital behavior and social exchange theory frameworks in order to provide a more granular trust-based elucidation of the factors that influence individuals’ engagement in OHCs. We collected data from 410 Brazilian participants of Facebook OHCs and tested the research model using partial least squares. The results confirm two new constructs—online community responsiveness and community support—as trust antecedents that influence engagement in OHCs, resulting in knowledge adoption and knowledge contribution responses. These findings contribute to the trust and engagement literatures and to social media research knowledge. From a practitioner perspective, the study findings can serve as an important guide for moderators and managers seeking to develop trusted and impactful OHCs. Collapse

Abstract: Social inclusion has become a pressing issue for organizations wishing to close the inequality and disparity gaps associated with underrepresented or disadvantaged groups. The challenge is becoming particularly critical in higher education institutions suffering from low retention rates and low graduation rates among first-generation college students (FGCS). In response to the challenges imposed by the notion of social inclusion, some universities and colleges are exploring the use of social networking technologies such as social media (SM) in ways that can impact social inclusion. In order to improve the understanding of how social networking technology affects the social inclusion of FGCS, we conducted a case study in a public, Hispanic-serving institution in the United States. We used technology affordance theory to reveal various affordances actualized by FGCS and various outcomes resulting from those affordances. To explain how the actualization of different strands of affordance produces certain outcomes, our analysis of 102 FGCS' narratives followed an established five-step framework for identifying generative mechanisms, revealing three SM user types-Community Builders, Scholars, and Information Seekers-and four actualized affordances, namely interconnection, inspiration, insightfulness, and intense comfort, which are conceptualized into three generative mechanisms: identity booster, academic growth, and self-care. Our results provide insights into SM usage for social inclusion outcomes. By revealing how technology use can promote social engagement and mitigate exclusion experienced by FGCS, this study contributes to the broad social inclusion research on technology and disadvantaged communities. While they have the potential to fundamentally improve traffic in urban areas, their success is determined by the citizens' use of the applications developed in related projects. However, citizens are rarely involved in the requirements elicitation or development process encompassed within such initiatives, even despite research showing the high potential of user-centric software development. In a multiple-methods approach combining focus group discussions and a quantitative survey, we investigate how citizens can be integrated in the specification process of data-driven traffic management applications and whether their involvement can influence the intention to use those applications in the future. With our findings, we contribute to the field of user-centric software design in information systems research applied to smart cities and offer insights into citizen involvement in that context. Abstract: The activity of bots can influence the opinions and behavior of people, especially within the political landscape where hot-button issues are debated. To evaluate the bot presence among the propagation trends of opposing politically-charged viewpoints on Twitter, we collected a comprehensive set of hashtags related to COVID-19. We then applied both the SIR (Susceptible, Infected, Recovered) and the SEIZ (Susceptible, Exposed, Infected, Skeptics) epidemiological models to three different dataset states including, total tweets in a dataset, tweets by bots, and tweets by humans. Our results show the ability of both models to model the diffusion of opposing viewpoints on Twitter, with the SEIZ model outperforming the SIR. Additionally, although our results show that both models can model the diffusion of information spread by bots with some difficulty, the SEIZ model outperforms. Our analysis also reveals that the magnitude of the bot-induced diffusion of this type of information varies by subject. Collapse

Abstract: Intelligent process automation is a technological innovation that combines symbolic automation tools with machine learning. Intelligent process automation can automate complex tasks that otherwise have to be performed by humans when symbolic automation is not powerful enough. Regardless of the high economic potential for companies, the adoption rate in practice is comparatively low. This could be due to the adoption behavior of the employees. In our work, we iteratively develop a Unified Theory of Acceptance and use of Technology (UTAUT) model for the adoption of intelligent process automation and evaluate it with an empirical study. With our research we want to empower designers to adapt the corresponding tools in the future to increase adoption. The study shows that, in addition to established factors for technology adoption, trust, transparency, and attitude towards technology are primary decision factors. Collapse

Abstract: As the use phase of buildings produces a substantial negative environmental impact, mechanisms to guide individuals towards more sustainable energy consumption are of interest. Smart energy apps which constantly monitor energy consumption and provide energy reduction recommendations to private households are a promising tool to tackle this issue. However, as little is known about factors driving their adoption, it remains unclear whether their potential can be leveraged. Against this backdrop, this study derives a technology acceptance model for smart energy apps which builds on a quantitative survey with 300 participants and the partial least squares approach. The results highlight personal innovativeness and environmental norms as additional acceptance factors. Our study points at the importance integrating both individual and technological aspects in technology adoption research, unveils potential levers for IS to drive adoption, and provides guidance to smart energy app designers.
