Abstract: Business processes, simply defined by Davenport as ‘structures for action’, organize the creation of value in a company. In addition to being carried out visibly, processes also have an inner dimension which remains hidden in the existing mechanistic metaphor of process management models. Aesthetic business processes draw from systems theory and Gestalt theory in order to uncover this inner dimension. The aim of this phenomenological investigation presented here is to describe the super-summative nature of business processes, in other words, to understand them holistically as a Gestalt. Mechanical Engineering students at a university of applied sciences analyzed business processes at different companies to discover patterns which they then visualized with the process participants at those companies. They used Christopher Alexander’s pattern language as a paradigm to make implicit knowledge buried in those business processes explicit. Using this technique, aesthetic business processes were identified as patterns. The format of the patterns served as a tool for collective thinking and as a form of expression for the Gestalt of aesthetic business processes in their visualization. A pattern language as an overview of the many ways to combine business process patterns has yet to be reconstructed based on this investigation. The shared visualizations highlighted the nature of the business processes and made it possible to see, in a metaphorical way, their significant interactions. Collapse

Abstract: Software platform ecosystems are emerging as a dominant model for IT-based services. To accelerate third-party development, platform owners often waive restrictions on app user interfaces to provide app developers with more autonomy in interface design. The literature has indicated, however, that standardized interface design across products is a strategic necessity for firms to introduce and manage their product lines, suggesting that platform owners should not waive restrictions on app user interfaces. This tension between the two approaches raises a crucial research question: Does standardized interface design used by apps and their host platform benefit the platform and apps that it hosts? Specifically, does the coordinated design approach enhance or hinder usage between the platform and apps such that apps attract usage from their host platform and vice versa? Drawing on the theory of basic Gestalts, we theorize the three interface design properties of interface similarity, embeddedness, and synchrony, and extend the theory to investigate how these properties help both apps and their host platform attract each other's users, thus reflecting derivative usage between them. We performed a randomized field experiment to test the proposed hypotheses. The results reveal that interface similarity, embeddedness, and synchrony of the app-platform interface design strengthen users' grouping perception of the platform and its apps, thus enhancing platform-to-app forward derivative usage. Contrary to our expectations, we found that this strengthened grouping perception does not improve the app-to-platform backward derivative usage. These findings have crucial implications for the value of interface design in software platform ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: The design of the workspace can be an indicator for an organization’s innovation culture. This paper introduces a canvas-based collaboration tool that facilitates both, team-based analysis of existing workspaces regarding the expressed culture, and cocreating spatial design ideas with the goal to instigate a cultural change. This two-way approach is also reflected in the canvas design. We describe the development process of the canvas and its evaluation through a workshop. As a result, the contribution of this paper is twofold: (1) It informs practitioners about the relevance of spatial workspace design for cultural change, and (2) it provides insights on an atypical canvas design. Abstract: The business insights that could be generated through the use of data analytics is one of the key motivations for firms to invest in such technologies. However, there is limited understanding of the required conditions for these tools to increase valuable insight generation. This research-in-progress study draws on the gestalt theory of insight and resource-based view of the firm to investigate the role of data analytics in generating valuable insights within organizations and the factors that influence this process. Particularly, this study focuses on how the bigness of data (i.e., volume, variety, and velocity), quality of data, and employees’ competency (i.e., analytical skills, and domain knowledge) impact insight generation (i.e., data hindsight, data insight, and data foresight) through the use of data analytics. A survey-based methodology is outlined to empirically validate the proposed model using structural equation modeling techniques. Potential contributions to theory and practice are also discussed. Abstract: Software systems are one of the most important technologies that are present in every task that humans and computers perform. Humans perform their tasks by using a computer interface. Graphical user interfaces are the most common interface that developers rely on to create easy-to-use, easy-to-learn and easy-to-understand software systems so that end users can improve their performance. However, many times, developers tend to create software using their own preferences based on their skills and abilities but do not consult theories that would produce better outcomes. We conducted a study to identity whether software that is developed by using Gestalt theories combined with interface development guidelines produces better outcomes compared to software developed using developers’ current skills. Results show that for the present research, participants perceived the system that was developed using such approach had superior quality compared to another that does not. However, results should be taken cautiously. Collapse

Abstract: Identifying the best way to organize the IS functions within an interprise has been a critical IS management issue since the mid-1980s. Yet to date, MIS researchers have offered little empirical evidence on which to base guidelines for the practitioner. This study seeks to explain a firm's IS organization design decision for a decentralized, centralized, or "hybrid" locus of responsibility from an expanded set of environmental overall organizational, and IS-specific antecedents as well as a larger concept of organizational alignment. Potential antecedents (drivers or enablers) are selected from prior contingency research and the IS literature; other variables emerge from the data collection. Data collected via on-site interviews from IS and general managers in six multi-divisional firms, paired by industry, confirm that centralized, decentralized, and hybrid IS structures exist--but often not in "pure" form--and that industry type is not a strong predictor. Data was also collected via survey form to capture ratings of importance for drivers (for enablers) for a recent IS design change in each firm. Based on both qualitative and quantitative data, four configurations are discussed: patterns of antecedents that are associated with (1) highly centralized or (2) highly decentralized IS structures; and patterns of antecedents that explain a firm's choice to (3) decentralize or (4) recentralize systems development and application planning functions in particular. A mode/based on these configurations is then proposed, The article concludes with implications for researchers and practitioners. Collapse
