Abstract: Management Information System (MIS) is a relatively young and interdisciplinary field with its eclectic structure. Although MIS gathers researchers from various backgrounds and disciplines, Turkey as a developing country has not been able to acquire the advantages of the field yet. There is still lack of studies which guide to researchers or give a significant contribution to the literature. In this study we investigated the characteristics of MIS research in Turkey between 1999 and 2016 by means of a descriptive content analysis. In the way of accomplishment, 380 MIS related articles were scanned by five different PhD students approximately for 6 months. Articles were analyzed based on their main subjects, methods, data sources and departments of the authors in order to find out the general research pattern and to reveal the profile of MIS research in Turkey. Even popularity of subjects followed a similar pattern with the foreign literature some distinct features particularly regarding the research strategies and backgrounds of researchers were discovered. Abstract: This paper discusses how research with practitioners can help reconcile the top-down requirements of headquarters with the bottom-up local needs in the context of global information systems. Based on a 12-month canonical action research project that took place at the Chinese branches of a French multinational corporation, our research revealed and addressed workarounds that the Chinese users of a company-wide global enterprise resource planning system had put in place that were not expected nor desired by company headquarters. From the local users' point of view, they were necessary to deal with Chinese legislation and cultural practices, but from the French headquarters' point of view, they meant that many of the potential gains of global standards were lost. Activity theory was used as a focal theory to analyse each of these workarounds and business process management as an instrumental theory to design solutions to the workarounds. We describe in detail how we used canonical action research to successfully deal with exemplars of each of the three types of workaround identified (data adjustments, process adjustments and parallel-system adjustments). Unusually, the research relates to post-implementation change rather than to that looking at change occurring before and during implementation. We argue that canonical action research and the particular combination of activity theory and business process management are appropriate for dealing with workarounds and this has not been demonstrated previously. Further, our research – deemed successful by managers, users and researchers alike – took place in China where previous literature suggests only limited success with such global systems. Collapse

Abstract: The international industry of engineering products and services is characterized by high complexity and competition. Corporations that expand globally have experienced that managing interdependent activities and business processes across several countries requires an effective deployment of advanced information technology. Whereas the literature has described implementation of global information systems as a means to coordinate and control the business processes, empirical studies have shown that introducing a large-scale information systems involves several managerial challenges when organizations are geographically dispersed. This paper studies deployment of a global enterprise system to support evolvement of global business processes. On the basis of a qualitative case study of a multinational corporation implementing an enterprise system across several geographical locations, we identify counteracting forces in the process of global standardization of IS and business processes and discuss how the organization try to manage these forces and challenges therein. The findings suggest that global business processes develop through diverse processes of learning and negotiation between local practices of use and infusion of the global enterprise system. Global information management studies have examined the implication of culture on the use of the technology in country settings.However, no studies have yet addressed the impact of culture on the technology artifact and how this influences the usage of the technology in work environments. As day-to-day work in global organizations become more intertwined with information systems the influence of technology on the worker and organization increases. It is important that we understand what this influence is and how it affects the global organization. Using enterprise resource planning systems as an example of global information systems, this paper will demonstrate that technology does have cultural elements that global organizations need to explore and understand. Abstract: Strategic management of global information systems (IS) is increasingly important for the multinational investment banking industry that had originally utilized information networks crossing national borders for profit making purposes. Significant changes have occurred to the scope of strategic management of IS in modern organizations following major restructuring of the global business environment. This research has sought to find whether new organisational forms, management strategies and competitive, collaborative and co-operative ideas in relation to global IS that have emerged in the cycle of strategic management of the multinational investment banks have enabled Global Information Systems. It was further investigated what changes in business model, organisational management structure and human resources in relation to strategic management of IS activate or inhibit successful global IS in those organizations. It is difficult for multinational corporations to successfully activate global IS because of disparate technological infrastructure, multiple vendors, conflicting standards and regulatory structure in different national jurisdictions. In addition, sensitivity to non-financial and non-economic factors such as differences of languages, religions, gender roles, customs and traditions is required. In order to establish cross-border IS, it is necessary to minimize obstacles by adjustment of organizational factors sometimes at the structural level. What changes activated or inhibited successful global IS in the multinational investment banks? This paper presents findings from nine different cases of organizational change from six financial Groups, and examines activators and inhibitors of successful global IS from the aspects of business model, organisational management structure and human resources. Abstract: Business enterprises continue to globalize, motivated by their search for new markets, greater efficiency in the use of resources, and greater competitiveness. Information systems and technologies serve as one of the critical success factors for making this possible. Some IS curricula supported this development by either integrating more globalization into current courses or by delivering stand-alone courses in Global IS Management as electives or requirements. The purpose of this paper is to review and propose “best practices” for the Global IS Management course, and consider contingencies that can be expected to influence the choice and success of various approaches. The paper provides a categorization of such courses based on differences in education level (graduate/undergraduate) and student population (MIS/InternationalBusiness/ mixed). We discuss experiences with approaches and practices that work across these segments, and activities targeted to each segment. The paper revisits and argues for the need to expand this curriculum, and provides practical details for MIS faculty who seek to integrate it into their own programs. Collapse

Abstract: Even though global information systems/technology research is a young stream of research, it is important to understand its current status. In this study, we have analyzed 53 global IT articles published from 1998 to 2003 in six leading IS journals. The main subjects, variables (independent and dependent variables), hypotheses, and findings were identified and analyzed. Some of the results show that Resource Management and IS Management Issues are the most studied subjects in global IT research, while subjects such as IT security and privacy, outsourcing, and organizational design have been somehow neglected. Interestingly, USA and Singapore are the most targeted countries for global information technology research. Collapse

Abstract: Using organizational information processing theory (OIPT), we suggest several factors that influence some of the enterprise resource planning (ERP) costs and benefits that organizations are experiencing. Though we do not attempt to address all important factors that contribute to an ERPs impact, we suggest two organizational characteristics that may have received insufficient attention in other ERP literature: interdependence and differentiation. High interdependence among organizational sub-units, contributes to the positive ERP-related effects because of ERPs ability to coordinate activities and facilitate information flows. However, when differentiation among sub-units is high, organizations may incur ERP-related compromise or design costs. We provide a case study that explores the viability of this framework. The case describes some local-level impacts of ERP and provides some evidence of the validity of the model. Unexpected findings are also presented. Collapse

Abstract: This research in progress proposes to evaluate the effectiveness of using Knowledge Management (KM) approaches in conjunction with Decision Support Systems (DSS). The authors performed a preliminary field survey at a global optical telecommunications network that is characterized by dispersed groups of collaborating engineers and other stakeholders. The results indicate alarm correlation has been a major challenge for telecommunications systems. A DSS should theoretically be able to leverage expert engineering knowledge using KM techniques to alleviate these challenges. This research will evaluate two specific DSS/KM approaches for capturing and sharing this engineering knowledge across independent network nodes. A rule-based approach allows local field engineers to expand the system’s knowledge base. In addition, the organization’s Research & Development engineers will distribute a knowledge base model that includes a behavioral model of the equipment. The models will then be combined with an inference engine to perform root-cause analysis of network faults. Collapse
