Abstract: Goal setting literature suggests that individuals set their goals more frequently on temporal landmarks, e.g. the New Year's Day (known as the fresh start effect). What remains unclear is whether setting goals on temporal landmarks has also a positive impact on goal attainment. We investigated goal setting and attainment behaviours in the context of an information system dedicated to smoking cessation with design features to promote such behaviours. We collected data from almost 1 million unique participants from 2015 to 2021 and studied the effects of goals set on temporal landmarks on goal attainment for two groups: (1) participants in their first attempts; and (2) participants who continuously set the same goal. The results show that setting goals on temporal landmarks has mostly a negative influence on goal attainment for the first group. However, for the second group, setting goals on temporal landmarks is largely positively correlated with goal attainment. Collapse

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to test the extent to which groups manage to attain synergy (both strong and weak) in the context of multiparty systems. We also aimed to test the effects of power (budget size), and goal difficulty, alongside their interaction effect. We have used a behavioral multiparty simulation in which Romanian participants first negotiated individually and then, in the second stage, they were organized into groups and asked to engage in intergroup negotiations. Results showed that, in general, best negotiators outperform groups, yet groups obtain higher negotiation payoffs than the average payoff obtained by their members in the first negotiation stage, but only for dyads. Moreover, powerful stakeholders and those that have high goals end up with the highest payoff. Last, our results show that power accentuates the positive relationship between goal difficulty and payoffs. The results have important implications for delegating representatives to multiparty negotiations and for the management of power asymmetry in multiparty systems. Collapse

Abstract: Many online question-and-answer (Q&A) communities have tried to motivate knowledge contribution through the implementation of gamification mechanisms. We know little, though, about the effectiveness of specific hierarchical privilege levels (a.k.a. “leveling up”) and non-hierarchical incentives (e.g., independent reputation gains and achievement badges) in promoting knowledge contribution. Drawing on goal-setting theory, expectancy-value theory, and other related theories, this study models how hierarchical privilege levels and nonhierarchical incentives serve as motivational goals stimulating continued knowledge contribution. By analyzing a rich dataset collected from an online Q&A platform, we find that closeness to the next hierarchical privilege level does, indeed, have a curvilinear relationship with continued knowledge contribution. Interestingly, nonhierarchical incentives, including reputation gains and granted badges, help to maintain continued knowledge contribution. Notably, user reputation diminishes the effects of both privilege levels and granted badges on future knowledge contribution. This implies that these gamification mechanisms, while potentially powerful for incentivizing user engagement in knowledge contribution, might not work as effectively for participants with already established reputations in the online community. This research provides theoretical and practical im­ plications for motivating continued user knowledge contribution in online Q&A communities. Collapse

Abstract: We aim to understand why employees take information technology (IT)-mediated shortcuts, that is, skipping one or several steps for completing tasks quicker by bending the rules. This is a specific and often detrimental form of noncompliant behavior. Adopting an ego-depletion perspective, we posit that IT complexity drives IT-mediated shortcuts by increasing employees' ego-depletion. Extending this view, we use a modified Delphi study and build on self-regulatory and goal setting theories to point to key boundary conditions for these effects. First, in a preliminary study we found that taking IT-mediated shortcuts in our context is, on average, detrimental to employee performance. This highlighted the need to focus on IT-mediated shortcuts. Next, we tested our assertions with three experiments focusing on the use of dashboards with 584 data analysts. The results show that (1) dashboard complexity increases ego depletion, (2) ego depletion fully mediates the impact of dashboard complexity on taking IT-mediated shortcuts, (3) moral integrity moderates the influence of ego depletion on taking IT-mediated shortcuts, and (4) outcome compared to learning goals enhance the impact of ego depletion on IT-mediated shortcuts. In all studies, objectively measured IT-mediated shortcut-taking was negatively associated with objectively measured task performance. Ultimately, the integrated perspective explains whether, how, and under what conditions IT complexity drives IT-mediated shortcuts. Collapse

Abstract: Setting and pursuing goals plays a major role in health behavior change. As an elementary component of interventions and mHealth apps, goals can support people in pursuing and attaining a desired outcome or behavior. Despite its widespread use and indicated effects on behavioral performance, there is no guidance on how to design and implement goal setting, planning and evaluation for mHealth nutrition promotion. We investigate goal setting and related components in the context of mHealth and health behavior change in a structured literature review. By utilizing morphological analysis, we develop a design framework for goal setting and pursuit. We validate and refine the framework by application on popular commercial nutrition apps. As a result, we identify the coverage of goal-setting and -pursuit characteristics as well as current gaps in the implementation of commercial mHealth nutrition apps, which offer the potential for future effective development of goal setting in mHealth nutrition promotion. Abstract: Knowledge management and knowledge documentation are essential capabilities of organizations for innovation and competition. While documenting knowledge is often induced by extrinsic motivation, persuasive systems have the potential to change behavior by emphasizing intrinsic motivation. In this study, we explore goal-setting in persuasive systems in a design science project about knowledge documentation and derive 17 design principles from literature and theories. We apply the design principles by creating a process for guided goal-setting and implement the process in a persuasive system for knowledge documentation in form of a mobile application. We evaluated the artifacts in two iterations regarding the realization of the design principles as well as the acceptance and perceived impact of the persuasive system. The study’s contribution is both the selection of the design principles, as well as the implementation in the form of a process and a mobile application. Collapse

Abstract: The ubiquity of information technology makes it possible to provide individuals with personalized, context-specific, and timely feedback at low marginal cost. This allows for highly scalable behavioral interventions that can support behavior change even for frequent, habitual, and incidental behaviors. Despite the well-documented potential of feedback interventions in improving personal and societal outcomes, the associated theoretical insights -in particular for real-time feedback on everyday behaviors -are sparse. To this end, this research-in-progress paper proposes a conceptual model to formalize cause-effect relationships between feedback interventions, the antecedents of behavior, and resulting behavioral changes by integrating important concepts from feedback intervention theory and other behavioral theories. Moreover, this paper outlines the planned validation of the model and research hypotheses with an empirical field study. Ultimately, the results are expected to inform the development of (future) information systems for behavior change by holistically explaining behavioral mechanisms associated with feedback interventions. Abstract: Online communities rely heavily on badges to incentivize users to participate in voluntary activities. We examine the relationship between earned badges/pursued badges and contributions in the Stack Overflow question and answer community. Our main results reveal that different levels of earned and pursued badges increase the amount of subsequent answering activity. In addition, earned gold badges are the most influential in the motivation of users while earned bronze badges are the least impactful. Furthermore, the effect of badges in­ volves positive spillovers from higher levels of earned badges to lower ones. Our findings offer important theoretical and managerial implications for online communities. Collapse

Theorists have outlined multiple possibilities to achieve integrative agreements (Pruitt in Negotiation behaviour, Academic Press, New York, 1981; Carnevale in: Deutsch, Coleman, Marcus (eds) Handbook of conflict resolution: theory and practice, Jossey-Bass, San Francisco, 2006), but negotiation research relies disproportionately on studies of one method of integration—making efficient tradeoffs on existing issues. The current studies examine integration through redefinition—modifying the issues under discussion. Doing so encourages revisiting the role goals play in negotiation. Study 1 found that positive and negative bargaining zones are not just indicators of agreement rates, but also cues to consider redefining issues. Specifically, negative bargaining zones spurred attempts to create value that positive bargaining zones did not. Study 2 found that focusing on interests was useful for redefining issues, whereas focusing on ambitious targets was no better than focusing on reservation points. Implications for negotiation theory are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Sharing economy platforms have adopted Context-Aware Finite Recommender Services (FRS) to cater to time-sensitive service demands. Presenting users with a reduced set of matched recommendations in batches, FRS is devised to induce users' choice urgency and avoid choice delay. However, there is a dearth of research that attempts to unravel the effects of batch presentation on choice urgency. Anchored on Goal-Setting Theory, we scrutinize the role of intra-batch diversity and inter-batch growth in generating choice urgency through FRS by analyzing a massive dataset of historical order recommendation records from a leading sharing economy platform. Preliminary analysis reveals that intra-batch diversity induces choice urgency while inter-batch diversity discourages choice urgency. Findings from this study contribute to extant literature on recommender services by unraveling how the design of FRS impacts user behavior. Collapse
