Abstract: The explosive spread of false news on social media has severely affected many areas such as news ecosystems, politics, economics, and public trust, especially amid the COVID-19 infodemic. Machine intelligence has met with limited success in detecting and curbing false news. Human knowledge and intelligence hold great potential to complement machine-based methods. Yet they are largely underexplored in current false news detection research, especially in terms of how to efficiently utilize such information. We observe that the crowd contributes to the challenging task of assessing the veracity of news by posting responses or reporting. We propose combining these two types of scalable crowd judgments with machine intelligence to tackle the false news crisis. Specifically, we design a novel framework called CAND, which first extracts relevant human and machine judgments from data sources including news features and scalable crowd intelligence. The extracted information is then aggregated by an unsupervised Bayesian aggregation model. Evaluation based on Weibo and Twitter datasets demonstrates the effectiveness of crowd intelligence and the superior performance of the proposed framework in comparison with the benchmark methods. The results also generate many valuable insights, such as the complementary value of human and machine intelligence, the possibility of using human intelligence for early detection, and the robustness of our approach to intentional manipulation. This research significantly contributes to relevant literature on false news detection and crowd intelligence. In practice, our proposed framework serves as a feasible and effective approach for false news detection. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reports the findings of a proactive design science research project involving the construction, evaluation, and organizational introduction of an information technology (IT) artifact in the context of air transportation logistics. Drawing on our insights from instantiating an IT artifact and embedding it into the organization of a major provider of unit load device management for airlines, we explore the idea that ISdriven automation in digitalizing environments is more limited by socio-economic factors than digital-technological capabilities. Both our IT artifact and the abstracted design principles we generated through heuristic theorizing (HT) are novel, enhancing the information system (IS) design knowledge base of human-machine symbiosis and IT artifacts. Overall, our findings contribute to a better understanding of how to design human-machine symbiosis in information systems. Collapse

Abstract: Recent information technologies make it possible to include sophisticated three-dimensional display formats in emergency management information systems (EMIS), decision-support systems that facilitate decision making in crisis situations. However, if decision makers are to improve their decisional performance, they must correctly identify appropriate situations for using these formats. We conduct two experiments and find that, as prior research has suggested, decision makers do not choose the most appropriate display format, but their performance improves when given prospective decisional guidance. We discuss implications of these findings for EMIS design, for the training of emergency management professionals, and for future research on display formats and decisional guidance. Collapse

Abstract: In this article we propose an approach for a decision support system (DSS) based on Knowledge Discovery from Databases (KDD). In such system, user must be involved throughout the decision-making process. In consequence we propose the integration of a Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) model into the development of DSS process based on KDD. Abstract: Work system analysis and design is complex and nondeterministic. In this paper we describe Brahms, a multiagent modeling and simulation environment for designing complex interactions in human-machine systems. Brahms was originally conceived as a business process design tool that simulates work practices, including social systems of work. We describe our modeling and simulation method for mission operations work systems design, based on a research case study in which we used Brahms to design mission operations for a proposed discovery mission to the Moon. We then describe the results of an actual method application project--the Brahms Mars Exploration Rover. Space mission operations are similar to operations of traditional organizations; we show that the application of Brahms for space mission operations design is relevant and transferable to other types of business processes in organizations.
