Abstract: The market of AI-enabled applications is growing fast and AI-enabled application has become a regular part of people's daily lives. Applying the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) framework, this research attempts to study how likely people would accept using AI-enabled applications and what factors affect individual decisions. An empirical study is conducted through an online survey and tested using a PLS-SEM model. Results show that User characteristics, AI-enabled application characteristics, user interaction, trust, and task-technology fit are the factors that affect users' intention to use AI-enabled applications. Theoretically, this study improves the understanding of how the unique characteristics of AI-enabled applications affect users' acceptance of AI-enabled applications. Practically, the findings of this study can enhance the comprehension of individual users' application usage patterns for developers of AI-powered applications. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the crucial role a crowdfunding campaign webpage can play in attracting potential backers, there has been a lack of theory-driven studies to investigate how to design effective campaign webpages for successful campaigns. Based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework, HCI theories, and literature on in formation diagnosticity, this study investigates how the effects of progress presentation designs can improve intention to back a crowdfunding campaign project. A total of 463 subjects participated in two controlled ex periments. MANCOVA and subsequent ANCOVA tests were conducted. We find significant effects of progress cue designs on backers’ perceptions, in turn inducing their intention to back projects. Collapse

Abstract: Impressions at first glance matter in the digital world in that they could lead to lasting impact on credibility perceptions, usage intention, and user satisfaction. Past studies have found that much of impression formation is affected by visual design-related features. Despite its importance, little is known of how different forms of visual aesthetics (i.e., classical vs. expressive aesthetics) influence web page impression formation. Drawing on impression formation literature and cue utilization theory, we formulate a theoretical model of web page impression formation with a temporal sequence of processing stages: automatic processing, initial perception confirmation, and impression formation, which in turn affects approach-avoidance tendency. We conduct two within-subject studies to collect both self-reported and eye movement data to test our predictions. Using real-world web pages as stimuli, the first study reveals that people engage in both automatic processing and attentive processing to form web page impressions, and arousal (measured by pupil size) shapes how people allocate attention (measured by peak duration and fixation count) to visual aesthetics. Using web pages with manipulated aesthetics in the second study, we illuminate the theoretical logic of web page impression formation by showing that people first engage in automatic processing and then engage in attentive processing. Both studies provide strong empirical support for the mediating role of arousal on the effects of visual aesthetics on attention allocation. These findings contribute to an initial theoretical understanding of visual aesthetics effects on impression formation in the digital world and provide important implications for website designers. Abstract: The 2017 Atlantic hurricane season was abnormally destructive. For small island developing states (SIDS) a range of underlying issues such as climate change and infrastructure failures also heightened risk. With the increased use of social media and other digital technologies, communities within SIDS are relying on new methods of information dissemination during crises. This paper analyses the ways in which social media and other digital technologies are used in the Caribbean for hurricane resilience and preparedness, using the case study of Antigua and Barbuda that were particularly damaged during the 2017 season. The study scopes the place of such technologies at present through the use of qualitative interviews from a range of governmental departments, organisations, humanitarian aid charities, ex-politicians, business owners and members of the public. It concludes by deriving three main lessons for SIDS for the better management of future hurricane seasons. Collapse

Abstract: Collaborative tools in organizations become more and more apparent. These tools are being realized by novel information technology. Particularly, healthcare is a fast-evolving industry in terms of information system innovation. As the evolution is fast, and new systems are always error-prone due to socio-technical complexity, new analysis tools and methods for quality assurance must be adapted. In earlier research, we proposed Activity Theory as a fitting analysis tool due to the reason that it has advantages over other HCI theories, such as Actor-Network Theory or Distributed Cognition. However, several limitations became apparent during our studies. In the present work, we are conducting a systematic literature review of activity theoretical limitations and challenges to provide design guidelines for an improved version of Activity Theory. These implications can help to develop more advanced Activity Theory concepts and contributions; which in turn can improve the analysis results of socio-technical systems in healthcare. Collapse

Abstract: Psychological self-help services on mobile devices play a vital role in supporting emergency rescuers who engage in highly stressful and self-devoting careers with frequent exposure to dangers and traumatic scenes right after disaster strikes. In this study, we propose and design a low-cost and widely deployable strategy for empowering emergency rescuers through an intelligent mobile psychological self-help tool. This tool will help reduce the gap between the limited number of qualified professional counsellors and the high demand for timely psychological support by rescuers. We start with a thorough investigation of user requirements, extant work, and relevant IS design theories to inform our system design choices, among which we identified that “virtual advisor identity” (VAI) needs further research. We then empirically examined how VAI influences the empowerment effect of ERMS. Involving 120 emergency rescuers who have just finished rescue tasks, our experiment shows that VAI has important effects on a user’s cognitive and emotional routes, which are significant empowering enablers that lead to positive empowerment outcomes. Interestingly, virtual peer advisor empowers users mostly through evoking emotional resonance from them, whereas virtual expert advisor is better at empowering users through cognitive channels. Important theoretical and practical implications of the findings are then discussed. Collapse

Abstract: With the emergence of new technologies, user transactions have become increasingly digital and thus anonymous. As a result, online platforms started offering new user identity verification mechanisms including online verification. However, convincing users to verify online represents a challenge as benefits must be carefully balanced with resulting risks. We combine Toulmin’s model of argumentation with Regulatory Focus Theory to develop communication arguments to nudge users into online verification. Two argument types consisting of both claim and claim-supporting data are employed: a promotion-focus argument conveying convenience and a prevention-focus argument aiming to reduce privacy concerns. In a controlled experiment, we find that both claims significantly increase online verification conversion rate if supported by data. The effect of a prevention-focus claim is stronger than that of a promotion-focus claim. However, if a prevention-focus claim is not supported by data, it actually decreases online verification rate compared to if no claim is shown. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIntelligent advisory services are becoming increasingly pervasive. Ranging from e-Commerce to e-Government platforms, intelligent advisory systems, with user-centered design, can potentially overcome technical barriers that commonly exist on traditional websites. This study explores the impact of system-user communication style similarities on the user's perception towards the virtual advisory service in the healthcare domain. Drawing on Similarity-Attraction Theory, we propose a research framework to investigate this relationship. Through a mixed-method approach, including preliminary surveys, experiments and follow-up interviews, this study shows that an intelligent advisory system's communication style, when aligned well with a user's communication style, can better engage the user and lead to more perceived transparency, enjoyment, informativeness and credibility during the interaction process. Overall, hedonic aspects of user perceptions are shown to be more critical for creating a feeling of social presence and reuse intentions than utilitarian ones. The implications of the study for research and practice are then discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Our research aims to discover the role of multiple smart devices and their different screen sizes in paid content sales, thus building a multi-screen content sales strategy. Our econometric model adopts a difference-in-differences method to measure the impact of multi-screen devices on users’ content consumption through screen size effects. In a natural experiment setting, we sample 238 individual customers who registered a single smartphone with a 3- to 4-inch screen at the beginning and then added devices with a similar or larger screen. Our paper determines the parameters in existing theoretical frameworks of online consumer utility (product selection and digital content price) to determine paid content purchase behavior in a multi-screen environment. Our key findings are that the price sensitivity of content decreases as a user registers new smart devices and registering new devices with larger screens positively influences less popular content consumption more than a small screen device does. Abstract: Long waits online undermine users' evaluations of Web sites and their providers, triggering abandonment behaviors. Yet e-business researchers and practitioners have not perfected mechanisms to respond to online wait issues. A filler interface that runs during the wait for search results may influence online users' perceived waiting time (PWT); however, no scientific investigation has attempted to design effective filler interfaces for managing online waits. By adopting resource allocation theory, cognitive absorption theory, and human computer interaction (HCI) theories (competition for attention, visual search, and motion effect), we design diverse filler interfaces and investigate their effects on antecedents of PWT. The proposed research model considers cognitive absorption factors such as temporal dissociation, focused immersion, and heighteneden joyment as antecedents of PWT, which in turn triggers three outcomes: affective appraisals, cognitive appraisals, and Web site use intention. A multistage, multimethod approach is used to test the research hypotheses. In the first stage, we compare a filler interface condition with a no-filler interface condition, and find the superiority of a filler interface with respect to inducing focused immersion and temporal dissociation.In the second stage, we conduct two controlled experiments to examine whether filler interfaces with various designs (varying the presence and relevance of image, text, and image motion) distinctly influence antecedents of PWT and confirm their distinctive effects on focused immersion, temporal dissociation, and heighteneden joyment. In addition, by conducting a structural equation modeling analysis, we find that our research model explains 51 percent, 51 percent, 44 percent, and 45 percent of the variance in PWT, affective appraisals,cognitive appraisals, and Web site use intention respectively.
