Abstract: Mobile devices have become increasingly prevalent in the context of consumers’ offline search and shopping behavior by acting as personal decision support tools. This paper investigates the relationship between con­ sumers’ real-time location and their search behavior when shopping offline. We develop two location-specific measures based on mobile device usage to analyze the association between a consumer’s real-time location and their search behavior: Present store distance and present store density. We apply these measures to a unique dataset from a leading mobile product information app that includes >13 million search sessions from 2.5 million consumers searching for 1.8 million different products. Our findings show that store distance and store density significantly influence consumers’ mobile search behavior: detailed searches for product-specific attributes (search depth) increase as store distance decreases and store density increases, while the number of jointly searched products within the same category (search breadth) increases as store distance and density increase. We also find that durable products weaken the main effects of store distance and density on search depth but strengthen it for search breadth. These results provide insights for offline retailers to better understand locationspecific consumer demands and improve their mobile in-app targeting and product assortment decisions. Collapse

Abstract: As part of an Information Systems course a project was created to illustrate how Google Data Studio can play a role in improving the analysis and visualization of data. Often practitioners interact with data from already existing databases or datasets and need to make sense of them before analyzing, visualizing and gleaning insights from them. The dataset used in this case is retrieved from the w3schools learn SQL online course. A query is written to extract the data, and the data is imported to Google Sheets for visualization with Google Data studio. The process enables the identification of data anomalies, the analysis of trends, visualization of outliers and creation of additional data to gain further insights. This process reduces the time of analysis and provides students with insights on the life cycle of data analysis from business understanding, to data understanding and back to business understanding. Further, results that may be expected such as performance of employees, products or vendors is reviewed in more detail to gain further insights. Collapse

Abstract: The popularity of mobile devices and the advancement of modern technology have resulted in more diversified consumer shopping channels, and many retailers have consequently embraced omnichannel retailing. The core concept of omnichannel retailing is to provide consumers with a seamless experience. Using commitment–trust theory as a framework, this study examines the effects of omnichannel integration quality on consumers’ stickiness intention. Analysis of data of 194 respondents reveals that consumer trust affects relationship commitment. Consumer trust and relationship commitment have a strong influence on stickiness intention, and breadth, transparency, and process consistency directly affect trust. Contrary to our expectation, omnichannel integration quality does not affect relationship commitment. Our results show that high levels of omnichannel integration quality can increase consumer trust, which helps retailers maintain favorable customer relationships. The findings of this study provide important theoretical and practical implications for omnichannel retailing research. Collapse

Abstract: Targeting personalized product recommendations to individual customers has become a mainstream activity in online stores as it has been shown to increase click-through rate and sales. However, as personalization becomes increasingly commonplace, customers may feel personalized content intrusive and therefore not responding or even avoiding them. Many studies have investigated advertising intrusiveness and avoidance but a research gap on the effect of degree of personalization on customer responses based on field evidence exists. In this paper, 27,175 recommendation displays from five different online stores are analyzed. The results show that the further the customer is in the purchasing process, the more effective personalization is if it is based on information about the present rather than past browsing session. Moreover, recommendations in passive form are more effective than recommendations in active form suggesting the need to dispel the perception of intrusiveness. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, critical realism and activity theory are compared within the context of theorizing technology-mediated organizational change. An activity theoretic analysis of the implementation of large-scale disruptive information systems in a public sector setting (in particular concerning paramedic treatment of heart attack patients and ambulance dispatch work activity) is used to illustrate how activity theory makes a significant contribution to critical realism, by (1) locating technology within "activity systems" and theorizing change through contradictions and congruencies within those systems; (2) developing recent critical realism-inspired theorization of the "inscription" of cultural and social relations within technology; and (3) developing recent insights of critical realist researchers regarding the way in which the performance management agenda is mediated through IS. Abstract: In this paper, we examine how the competitive industry environment shapes the way that digital strategic posture (defined as a focal firm's degree of engagement in a particular class of digital business practices relative to the industry norm) influences firms' realized digital business strategy. We focus on two forms of digital strategy: general IT investment and IT outsourcing investment. Drawing from prior literature on determinants of IT activity and competitive dynamics, we argue that three elements of the industry environment determine whether digital strategic posture has an increasingly convergent or divergent influence on digital business strategy. By divergent influence, we mean an influence that leads to spending substantially more or less on a particular strategic activity than industry norms. We predict that a digital strategic posture (difference from the industry mean) has an increasingly divergent effect on digital business strategy under higher industry turbulence, while having an increasingly convergent effect on digital business strategy under higher industry concentration and higher industry growth. The study uses archival data for 400 U.S.-based firms from 1999 to 2006. Our findings imply that digital business strategy is not solely a matter of optimizing firm operations internally or of responding to one or two focal competitors, but also arises strikingly from awareness and responsiveness to the digital business competitive environment. Collectively, the findings provide insights on how strategic posture and industry environment influence firms' digital business strategy. Collapse

Abstract: This paper expands the organization theory and evidence on regional industrial agglomerations. We define regional economic activities according to the attributes of the organizations that populate a region and investigate how organizational characteristics influence macro-outcomes at a regional economic level. We focus on two dimensions emerging from two widely known organizational forms: the managerial corporation and the knowledge cluster with a marked orientation toward interfirm knowledge spillovers. We use an original data set of 146 U.S. cities to obtain variations in the extent to which they are populated by managerial firms or knowledge clusters. By utilizing city-level measures of managerial salaries, we test how the intensity of managerial corporation versus knowledge cluster characteristics affects the mean and dispersion of the "rewards" of cities. Our evidence suggests that higher managerial corporate characteristics lower the variability of rewards, while they have no effect on the mean of rewards. Higher-knowledge cluster characteristics produce both higher dispersion and higher expected rewards. We explain these results by looking at the different learning mechanisms of the two organizational types. In so doing, we highlight the role of intra- and interfirm knowledge processes as important sources of differences in the rewards of the two models. From an empirical point of view, results are confirmed using both patent-based and skill mobility-based measures of knowledge spillovers. Collapse

Abstract: We examine the impact of employee turnover on operating performance in settings that require high levels of knowledge exploitation. Using 48 months of turnover data from U.S. stores of a major retail chain, we find that, on average, employee turnover is associated with decreased performance, as measured by profit margin and customer service. The effect of turnover on performance, however, is mitigated by the nature of management at the store level. The particular aspect of management on which we focus is process conformance--the extent to which managers aim to reduce variation in store operations in accordance with a set of prescribed standards for task performance. At high-process-conformance stores, managers use discipline in implementing standardized policies and procedures, whereas at low-process-conformance stores, managers tolerate deviations from these standards. We find that increasing turnover does not have a negative effect on store performance at high-process-conformance stores; at low-process-conformance stores, the negative effect of turnover is pronounced. Our results suggest that, in settings where performance depends on the repetition of known tasks, managers can reduce turnover's effect by imposing process discipline through standard operating procedures. Abstract: Online product review networks help to transmit information that customers can use to evaluate products in Internet commerce. These networks frequently include an explicit social component allowing consumers to view both how community members have rated individual product reviews and the social status of individual reviewers. We analyze how these social factors impact consumer responses to consumer review information. We use a new dataset collected from Amazon.com’s customer reviews of books. This dataset allows us to control for the degree to which other community members found the review helpful, and the reputation of the reviewer in the community. We find that more helpful reviews and highlighted reviews have a stronger impact on sales than other reviews do. We also find that reviewer information has a stronger impact on less popular books than on more popular books. These results suggest that the dynamics of reputation communities make it harder for self-interested parties to manipulate reviews versus an environment where all reviews are treated equally. Abstract: A set of quantitative web site attributes and their corresponding metrics are proposed for better understanding of the evolution of functional characteristics of commercial web sites. This set of metrics can facilitate an objective comparison of commercial web sites developed over time and in different regions of the world. Their use would also help studies on functional classification of web sites. The result of a longitudinal study using the proposed metrics is then presented. This involves a stratified systematic sample of 98 Hong Kong-based commercial web sites measured on three separate occasions during a period of 2.5 years. The results show that, while the sampled web sites generally grew larger in content, their functions were only marginally enhanced over time, in contrast to the general impression of fast growing e-commerce activities. Cluster analysis revealed that the sample was dominated by web sites with low information intensity. The results obtained in Hong Kong were compared with those of related studies in the US and Europe. Collapse
