Abstract: The massive and sudden deployment of telework during the Covid-19 pandemic led to a range of emotional reactions for employees. We explore these emotions through a data set consisting of humoristic videos produced during the pandemic. Humor was used by video authors as a way of coping with this sudden transformation of work practices and expressing these emotions. We developed a video analysis protocol and a grid to analyze the types of humor mobilized. Black humor was used for instance to target power relations, and self-derision to create a feeling of recognition of telework experiences in the audience. We found that different types of humor corresponded to three dimensions, instrumental, relational and managerial, and emotions related to decreasing levels of employee control. We suggest that new ways of working in the post-Covid era can be improved through a consideration of employees' emotions and sense of control along these dimensions. Collapse

Abstract: The online solicitation of youth has been established as an unintended consequence of the connectedness afforded individuals through computer-mediated conversation. Information systems research focused on the behavioural patterns of online solicitors of youth is scant and lacks a strong theoretical foundation. We address this gap through an evolved grounded theory analysis of 90 Perverted Justice transcripts to extract the behavioural patterns that emerge when online solicitors use instant messaging to enact behaviours of grooming, predation, offending, and control. The aims of the research are: (1) delineate between grooming behaviour, predatory behaviour, and offending behaviour; (2) differentiate between passive and controlling solicitor language; (3) disentangle these behaviours from what the technology permits; (4) extend the current understanding of cybersexual abuse to show grooming as only one aspect of a phenomenon that also includes predation and offence; and (5) identify how these results are important for academics and software developers. Abstract: Effectuation theory has gained prominence in the field of new product development (NPD). For instance, research has previously shown that the highly uncertain NPD process may benefit from an effectual behavior. However, literature also notices that decision-making behavior (i.e., causation and effectuation) depends on the context. Despite the dramatical changes digital technologies bring to innovation processes and relationships, the interplay of managerial decision-making behaviors in a digital context has not been examined. Hence, we investigate the influence of causation and effectuation on the NPD departmental digital strategy with the purpose to build dynamic innovative capabilities (i.e., exploitative and explorative capabilities) -a driver of NPD success. To prove our hypotheses, we collected survey responses from NPD managers in 213 firms. Our partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analyses yield several findings. While digital strategy enables causal managers to build exploitative and explorative capabilities, it complements effectual managers in doing so. Collapse

Abstract: Using a core idea of critical social theory, alienation, we interrogate the failure in the design and adoption of a Stop-COVID app in France. We analyse the political and scientific discourse, to develop an understanding of the conditions giving rise to this failure in this unprecedented moment. We argue that the digital-first solutionist approach taken by the government failed because, as in all Western countries, most stakeholders were alienated from the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic and lacked concrete knowledge of it. Furthermore, the French government and its COVID-19 council excluded relevant scientific experts in favour of quantitative modelling based on abstract partial knowledge. This along with coercion and lack of transparency about the app, reinforced alienation, undermined effectiveness in managing the crisis and resulted in the digital design failure. We suggest that such alienation will prevail in the COVID-19 era characterised by regimes of control, rampant abusive location tracking, and data collection, and where public officials are more concerned with managing effects than seeking causal explanations. The digital-first solutionist approach was adopted, not because digital solutions (to contact tracing) are superior to traditional ones, but by default due to alienation and lack of interdisciplinary cooperation. Abstract: Technological advancements have enabled the emergence of increasingly intelligent and autonomous support of private decision-making. Automated financial investing by robo-advisors is exemplary of this development. For the user to benefit from digital investment management, robo-advisors must reflect user preferences. Important robo-advisor characteristics are their level of automation, the degree of control they allow customers, and their transparency. However, suitable configurations along the characteristics have not yet been determined. Specifically, users value high financial performance while desiring control over investments, partly caused by cognitive bias. In case of algorithmic superiority to human decisions in this context, a performance-control dilemma occurs. In this study, we conduct a choice-based conjoint analysis to derive user preferences of robo-advisor configurations and investigate the potential of transparency to alleviate the performance-control dilemma. Results suggest that users prefer hybrid automation and high levels of control and transparency, supporting the dilemma's occurrence. Transparency is confirmed to be a potential mitigator of the dilemma only for some attribute levels tested. These findings enhance our understanding of user preferences in highly autonomous decision support in the presence of cognitive bias. We provide implications for theory and practice by identifying the performance-control dilemma and suggesting transparency as a mitigator. Collapse

Abstract: Following a significant increase in media attention through the exorbitant rise in Bitcoin prices in 2017, the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) was introduced as a new way for organisations and companies to fund their business, while retail investors were presented with a new opportunity to invest into young projects and companies. Little is known about who these investors are, why and how they invested in ICOs and how they evaluated their investments afterwards. Thus, in this paper, we investigate how investment behaviour and investment satisfaction is influenced by behavioural biases and personality traits of retail investors in ICOs. We analyse survey data from more than 300 respondents, finding that ICO investors are young, educated and in the majority male. Significant relationships between single biases and personality traits can be found. Investors demonstrate a unique set of personality traits, scoring low on neuroticism, which may explain consciously made, high-risk investments. Additionally, biases affect investment satisfaction, with overconfidence and disposition bias surprisingly being positively associated with investment satisfaction. Our results may help investors understand and improve their investment behaviour and decisions, while regulators may use this knowledge to assess the need to protect investors from costly mistakes in a new, technology driven market. Abstract: Theories of decision-making, both prescriptive and descriptive, have long been important to decision support systems (DSS). Currently, the field of behavioral economics (BE) provides the dominant descriptive approach for understanding human decision-making. An indication of the field's standing is that three Nobel Prizes have been awarded to behavioral economics. Contemporary BE has two major theory foundations – the dual process theory of decision-making cognition and a set of judgment heuristics and cognitive biases. These foundations have been combined to create important theories like prospect theory and action strategies like nudging. Previous research has found that DSS has been slow to adopt recent advances in BE, even to the extent that some projects continue to use older theories like the phase model of decision making. This paper aims to make DSS researchers aware of contemporary BE, its nature, and its differences with early BE. We believe that behavioral economics is a useful and productive foundation for DSS research and that the use of BE in DSS should be significantly expanded. Collapse

Abstract: This paper reports our work on an educational simulation that we call the Playable Case Study (PCS). A PCS is characterized by a fictitious narrative integrated with real-world learning activities, helping students learn skills, knowledge, and dispositions relevant to a professional career. We describe a recent pilot test of a PCS focused on the discipline of cybersecurity, emphasizing the kinds of tensions and difficulties that can arise during the development of immersive, experiential learning experiences: a) challenges accompanying the work of interdisciplinary PCS teams, particularly maintaining technical accuracy while still developing an authentic and engaging narrative; b) reconciling the opportunities provided by the philosophy of the simulation with the need to scaffold educational experiences to support students’ capabilities; and c) integrating the PCS into the classroom environment. We also provide design recommendations, in the form of questions that others can consider if they are attempting to create similar educational experiences. Collapse

Abstract: With the growing role of information technology (IT), many organizations struggle with IT-related risks. Both IT managers and IT auditors are involved in assessing, monitoring, and reporting IT risks, but this does not necessarily mean that they share the same views. In this study, we draw upon the actor–observer asymmetry perspective to understand differences in IT managers’ vs. IT auditors’ perceptions of risks. Through a quasi-experiment with 76 employees of a financial institution, we found that IT managers and IT auditors showed the expected actor–observer differences. Abstract: There is considerable research on how Decision Support Systems (DSSs) enable users to make better decisions. However, there is less focus on the possibility that some of their features may introduce biases and encourage suboptimal user behavior. We report on an experimental study that examines three DSS features that are generally considered beneficial to the user: the degree of choice the system provides to the user, the presence of competition among concurrent users, and the use of training to increase system familiarity. We hypothesize that the three DSS features may increase risky behavior (measured as the amount invested in a stock investment task with random outcomes) and overconfidence, conceptualized as the illusion of control, the phenomenon whereby people believe their chances of success at a task are greater than would be warranted by objective analysis. Our results confirm the effects of the three DSS features on risky behavior but only degree of choice impacts overconfidence. Moreover, overconfidence does not appear to mediate the impact of the DSS features on risky behavior. Finally, we hypothesize and confirm that, controlling for the effect of actual performance, overconfidence increases user satisfaction with the decision-making process and outcome. Collapse
