Abstract: Entitlement has been identified as a potentially valuable employee characteristic in the prediction of computer abuse but has not been studied systematically in the IS domain. We introduce the construct of technological entitlement as the persistent sense of being more deserving of technological resources, uses, and privileges compared to other employees. Adapting a model of general entitlement to the work technology context, we theorize that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse and that this relationship is amplified by perceptions of technology restriction. After developing and validating a scale to measure technological entitlement, we conduct three studies with working adult samples to test our hypotheses. In Study 1 (n = 187), using a behavioral design, we find that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse behavior (beyond general entitlement) and that this relationship is stronger when employees perceive organizational restrictions on technology usage. We replicate these findings in Study 2 (n = 339) with an experiment. In Study 3 (n = 156), we manipulate the context of restrictiveness within our experimental vignette to establish the generalizability of our moderator. We discuss how technological entitlement helps explain existing inconsistencies in the effectiveness of deterrence measures as well as other theoretical and practical implications of our work. Abstract: Despite the predominant view in the agile information systems development (ISD) literature that agile information systems development practices use (AISDPU) has positive ramifications for ISD teams and projects, previous research has paid considerably less attention to whether and how these practices can be simultaneously beneficial and burdensome to individual developers. In addition, much of our knowledge on AISDPU and its effects relies on research into the differences between developers over an extended period of time. Yet, agile ISD practices are typically used on a day-to-day basis and can thus be viewed as an inherently within-person phenomenon, pointing to the need for daily investigations that provide a closer look at the immediate, lived experiences of developers. Drawing on the holistic stress process model, we develop the idea that daily AISDPU can be a source of stressful situational demands with both energizing and depleting effects that may thus help or harm developer well-being. In an experience-sampling study of 131 developers who responded to daily surveys spread over 10 workdays, we show that AISDPU can indeed be a double-edged sword: instrumental to developers’ energy resources (by increasing work engagement) on some days yet detrimental to their energy resources (by increasing depletion) on others—two forces with opposing effects on developer well-being. Importantly, we find that the divergent effects of AISDPU critically hinge on whether developers appraise it as a challenge or a threat. As a potential antidote, we investigate the moderating role of information technology (IT) mindfulness in developers’ appraisal processes. Our results show that IT mindfulness serves as a facilitator of challenge appraisals and as a buffer against threat appraisals. More broadly, this study challenges the predominant view of AISDPU as an inherently good thing and offers meaningful insights into why and when AISDPU improves versus impairs developer well-being. Abstract: Virtual work has increasingly gained global popularity in the business community, with virtuality becoming integrated into traditional office work settings. As the essence of virtuality comprises geographic dispersion and information systems (IS) use, the implementation of a wide variety of novel and advanced information technologies (IT)/IS as productivity and communication tools have fueled the trend in which virtual work permeates the modern workplace. Despite the heavy use of advanced IT/IS as an integral part of virtual work, our understanding on identifying the work dynamics between IS-related antecedents and employee work outcomes in virtual work contexts is still limited. Drawing on efficacy theory, this study focuses on two important IS-related antecedents within virtual work contexts—IS support for creativity and effective IS use—and their effects on job satisfaction. Specifically, we examine the mediating effect of effective IS use on the relationship between IS support for creativity and job satisfaction above and beyond the perceived usefulness and IS satisfaction, which have previously been recognized as impactful antecedents for IS-related effectiveness. To test the posited hypotheses, data were collected (N = 504) from an online survey platform. Using multiple mediation analyses, the study results confirm our hypotheses that (1) IS support for creativity is positively related to job satisfaction in virtual work settings; and (2) effective IS use mediates the relationship between IS support for creativity and job satisfaction even after controlling for perceived usefulness and IS satisfaction, which indicates the unique explanatory power of effective IS use for increased job satisfaction in virtual work settings. Abstract: Check-in services (CISs) are a highly relevant part of location-based services that provide customer value greater than other mobile services due to their technical possibilities; conversely, CISs also create various risks to pri­ vacy, as they enable the continuous live tracking of users. We investigate these risks and develop a third-order privacy risk construct based on communication privacy management (CPM) theory to explain how a set of concerns violates privacy boundary mechanisms and generates perceived privacy risk. A developmental mixedmethod design is used to qualitatively derive the construct qualitatively through 20 interviews and evaluate it quantitatively using a privacy calculus model with structural equation modelling (N = 431). The results confirm the third-order privacy risk construct and reveal new underlying concerns that create this risk. The results of this study are useful for both practitioners and academics, as they provide insights into how context-specific privacy concerns emerge in advanced mobile services, such as CISs. Abstract: This empirical paper examines to what extent distinct IT skills (e.g., Microsoft Excel skills) as well as digital competencies (e.g., digital communication) are vital to cope successfully with digitalization demands. Based on the job demands-resources model we hypothesize that digital competencies as well as IT skills lead to lower levels of employees' perceived digitalization overstrain. However, results of regression analysis in our study (n = 171 participants) reveal that broad digital competencies like Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication are more important for coping with the demands of digitalization than specific IT skills. Furthermore, we applied cluster analyses in order to identify four distinct digital competence profiles which we labelled as the Digitally Cautious, the Digital Novices, the Creative Problem-Solvers and the Communicative Collaborators. Companies may explicitly strengthen their employees' digital competencies prior to their software knowledge to cope with general digitalization challenges like higher degrees of ambiguity, uncertainty or dynamic change. Abstract: The rise of mobile apps is compelling ambitious companies to rush to market their own branded apps in hopes of building customers’ brand loyalty. By applying service-dominant logic, the lens of affordance, and two brand perceptions (brand competence and brand warmth), this study explores critical determinants of app continuance intention and brand loyalty among app users. Five affordances of branded apps are linked to value-in-use, which contributes both directly and indirectly to the two loyalty-related outcomes, through either brand competence or brand warmth. Abstract: Voice, or employees’ upward expression of challenging but constructive concerns or ideas on work-related issues, can play a critical role in improving organizational effectiveness. Despite its importance, evidence suggests that many managers are often hesitant to solicit voice from their employees. We develop and test a new theory that seeks to explain this puzzling reluctance. Voice is a distinctive behavior that involves escalation of opinions, ideas, or concerns by employees to their managers with the expectation that they would respond by making systemic changes in their teams. Hence, we argue that managers are likely to solicit voice more when they perceive requisite discretion and influence (personal control) to effect changes in their teams. Additionally, because voice-driven change can cause short-term disruptions and bring about benefits typically only over time, we propose that managers act on their personal control to solicit more voice when they also possess adequate long-term orientation. We find support for our arguments across four studies using experimental as well as correlational methods. We discuss the conceptual and practical implications of our findings. Collapse

Abstract: Attempts to improve gender parity at workplaces are more effective when organizations mobilize their entire workforce, including men, to participate (i.e., speak up with ideas, volunteer, or serve as champions) in gender-parity initiatives. Yet, frequently, men are hesitant to participate in such initiatives. We explicate one reason for such hesitation on the part of men and suggest ways organizations can address this challenge. Using four studies (correlational as well as experimental), we demonstrate that men experience lower psychological standing (i.e., a subjective judgment of legitimacy to perform an action) with respect to gender-parity initiatives that leads them to participate less in such initiatives. We explain how psychological standing provides a complementary explanation to the current narrative in the literature suggesting that men’s poor participation results from sexist or discriminatory attitudes toward gender parity. We also establish that psychological standing influences participation over and above efficacy, instrumentality, and psychological safety and highlight how organizations can increase men’s participation by providing them with psychological standing when soliciting their participation in gender-parity initiatives. We discuss the implications of our findings for the literatures on gender parity, change management, and employee voice and participation.
