Global Leaders for Global Teams: Leaders with Multicultural Experiences Communicate and Lead More Effectively, Especially in Multinational Teams

Abstract: In an era of globalization, it is commonly assumed that multicultural experiences foster leadership effectiveness. However, little research has systematically tested this assumption. We develop a theoretical perspective that articulates how and when multicultural experiences increase leadership effectiveness. We hypothesize that broad multicultural experiences increase individuals’ leadership effectiveness by developing their communication competence. Because communication competence is particularly important for leading teams that are more multinational, we further hypothesize that individuals with broader multicultural experiences are particularly effective when leading more versus less multinational teams. Four studies test our theory using mixed methods (field survey, archival panel, field experiments) and diverse populations (corporate managers, soccer managers, hackathon leaders) in different countries (Australia, Britain, China, America). In Study 1, corporate managers with broader multicultural experiences were rated as more effective leaders, an effect mediated by communication competence. Analyzing a 25-year archival panel of English Premier League soccer managers, Study 2 replicates the positive effect of broad multicultural experiences using a team performance measure of leadership effectiveness. Importantly, this effect was moderated by team national diversity: soccer managers with broader multicultural experiences were particularly effective when leading teams with greater national diversity. Study 3 (digital health hackathon) and Study 4 (COVID-19 policy hackathon) replicate these effects in two field experiments, in which individuals with varying levels of multicultural experiences were randomly assigned to lead hackathon teams that naturally varied in national diversity. Overall, our research suggests that broad multicultural experiences help leaders communicate more competently and lead more effectively, especially when leading multinational teams. Collapse

Abstract: A question of central importance for researchers and practitioners is how information technology (IT) can help firms survive and thrive in turbulent and constantly changing business environments. To address this issue, this study develops the idea that IT architecture flexibility helps sustain competitive performance by driving the formation of IT-enabled dynamic capabilities, and that IT governance decentralisation strengthens this relationship. IT architecture flexibility and IT governance decentralisation, therefore, develop complementary effects. We argue that IT-enabled dynamic capabilities are a core antecedent for competitive performance gains, particularly under uncertain external environmental conditions. Tests of the proposed model using survey data from 322 international firms support these ideas. Our research also shows that, under conditions of high environmental heterogeneity, the value of IT architecture flexibility and IT governance decentralisation is increased, while the impact of IT-enabled dynamic capabilities on competitive performance is amplified. Abstract: Some have called bitcoin a real bubble, while, according to others, it is the most radical invention of the twentyfirst century. Nevertheless, there is a consensus regarding the disruptive potential of blockchain technology, which is the basis of bitcoin and other similar cryptocurrencies. As the interest in these digital currencies is growing, many vendors around the globe now accept payments in blockchain-based currencies. However, not much is known about how individuals around the world would react to using blockchain-based currencies as spending currencies. Given the global reach of these currencies, in this study, we explore the role of national cultural values in influencing individuals’ willingness to use blockchain-based currencies. To do so, we collected survey data from the U.S. and India. We found that national cultural values (collectivism, power distance, masculinism, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation) significantly affect blockchain-based currency usage. Collapse

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly deployed in organizations, allowing information systems (IS) to incorporate self-learning mechanisms. Machine learning (ML) is commonly used as the underlying technology, as it enables IS to derive patters from collected data and perform tasks that were previously reserved for humans. While organizations hope to increase their efficiency and effectivity through adopting AI, the actual linkage between AI use and performance impacts for individuals remains largely overlooked in IS research so far. Therefore, we employ a qualitative research approach to develop a theoretical model for this relationship. In detail, we conduct expert interviews and build on the widely used "task-technology-fit" (TTF) theory. We identify relevant dimensions for the main theory constructs and expand the theory with further components to fit the AI context. Our findings enable future empirical research regarding performance impacts of AI use. Practitioners can use our model to evaluate use cases for AI adoption by considering task, data, and technology characteristics. Collapse

Abstract: With the popularity and growth of social networking sites, users often rely on the advice and recommendations from online friends when deciding to purchase movie tickets. The relationship between users' reviews and movie ticket purchase intention in the context of social media has been demonstrated in several studies, but few studies have explored users' perceptions of the similarity effect on online purchase intention or the psychological mechanisms of the similarity effect. From an interpersonal relationship perspective, we propose that similarity (including external and internal similarity) is an important cue for users who are deciding to purchase movie tickets online. Built on SOR (Stimuli-Organism-Response) Model and drawn upon trust transfer and information technology acceptance theories, we examined whether similarity could enhance users' online purchase intention of movie tickets. The results of a PLS analysis demonstrated that both external and internal similarity significantly affected users’ perceived usefulness, enjoyment and trust transfer, which in turn exerted profound impacts on users’ social shopping behaviors. Abstract: The question of how to design attractive model in online advertising is especially important for online operators of electronic commerce websites. This study examines how a model’s eye gaze direction influences consumers’ visual processing, taking into consideration smiling facial expressions for both Chinese and American consumers. Drawing on shared signal theory and cultural differences, a set of eye-tracking experiments was performed. The results show that consumer arousal is much higher when the model has a smiling facial expression paired with a direct eye gaze, compared to an averted eye gaze. This effect is much stronger for Chinese consumers than American consumers. However, for cognitive information processing, we found that consumers process product information on a deeper level when the model has a smiling facial expression paired with an averted eye gaze, compared to a direct eye gaze. Although there is a significant difference between Chinese and American consumers in processing the product brand, no significant differences were identified in their processing of the text. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Besides their entertainment value, serious games can have beneficial therapeutic effects for elderly people that improve their health and well-being. Games are likely to be accepted by elderly persons who have enjoyed games their lives, and because there are more and more of such elderly, it is important to investigate games as a therapeutic device. This research reviewed the literature focusing on the effects of games on elderly persons in three main types of effects: physical, cognitive, and social effects. The majority of reviewed papers focused on physical and cognitive effects, and were published in recent years, which emphasizes the relative novelty of this topic and suggests that future research will need to address social impact as well. In addition, while many papers claimed positive impacts as a result of using games, our review found that more attention should be given to research designs. Collapse

This may suppose a problem in IS theory building because it may lead IS scholars to non-correct results. Although the IS community’s awareness is rising, we do not have a clear understanding of the problem nor fine-grained practical guidelines on how to address the endogeneity in IS empirical research using PLS. Further, none of the PLS software packages has test of endogeneity capabilities. This paper explains and illustrates how to address endogeneity in research using PLS path modeling, and contribute to IS research in two ways: (1) we define the problem of endogeneity in empirical research and explain its main causes with IS research examples, (2) we show how to address endogeneity by correcting for omitted variables in PLS path modeling with composite and factor models. Abstract: China has become one of the most important economies in the global market, but negotiating with the Chinese remains a great challenge for most Westerners. This study is to help better understand Chinese business negotiation styles with an indigenous perspective by exploring the impact of Confucian ideal personality on business negotiation process in China. This study tests the effects of three key components of Confucian ideal personality—benevolence (Ren), wisdom (Zhi), and courage (Yong) on Chinese negotiation behaviors and further on negotiation outcomes with 200 business students in a simulated negotiation exercise. The results support the significant effects of benevolence and courage on Chinese business negotiation styles but wisdom is not found to have any significant impact in China. The overall pattern of the results substantiates the strong influence of Confucianism on Chinese negotiation styles, and provides an important supplement to negotiation theories developed in the West. Abstract: Despite the wide diffusion of gamification in business, limited research exists investigating the application and impacts of gamification. As the gamification effects are heavily dependent on the context of its implementation, this study used the design of the TripAdvisor’s funware for investigating the use and the impacts of gamification in a specific tourism context. After reviewing the literature for understanding how to design funwares that can lead to desired experiential and behavioural user outcomes, the paper discusses the way in which the TripAdvisor designed its funware for motivating the travellers to engage with its website and for enhancing the travellers’ online experiential values and trip planning processes. Data from TripAdvisor users were also collected for investigating the impacts of the TripAdvisor’s funware design on the following users’ outcomes: experiential values gained by using TripAdvisor; impacts of TripAdvisor on travellers’ trip planning processes; impacts of Tripadvisor on trip experiences.
