Abstract: The quest to open black box artificial intelligence (AI) systems evolved into an emerging phenomenon of global interest for academia, business, and society and brought about the rise of the research field of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). With its pluralistic view, information systems (IS) research is predestined to contribute to this emerging field; thus, it is not surprising that the number of publications on XAI has been rising significantly in IS research. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of XAI research in IS in general and electronic markets in particular using a structured literature review. Based on a literature search resulting in 180 research papers, this work provides an overview of the most receptive outlets, the development of the academic discussion, and the most relevant underlying concepts and methodologies. Furthermore, eight research areas with varying maturity in electronic markets are carved out. Finally, directions for a research agenda of XAI in IS are presented. Collapse

Abstract: Electronic word of mouth (eWOM) is prominent and abundant in consumer domains. Both consumers and product/service providers need help in understanding and navigating the resulting information spaces, which are vast and dynamic. The general tone or polarity of reviews, blogs or tweets provides such help. In this paper, we explore the viability of automatic sentiment analysis (SA) for assessing the polarity of a product or a service review. To do so, we examine the potential of the major approaches to sentiment analysis, along with star ratings, in capturing the true sentiment of a review. We further model contextual factors (speciﬁcally, product type and review length) as two moderators aﬀecting SA accuracy. The results of our analysis of 900 reviews suggest that diﬀerent tools representing the main approaches to SA display diﬀering levels of accuracy, yet overall, SA is very eﬀective in detecting the underlying tone of the analyzed content, and can be used as a complement or an alternative to star ratings. The results further reveal that contextual factors such as product type and review length, play a role in aﬀecting the ability of a technique to reﬂect the true sentiment of a review. Collapse

Abstract: With the growing popularity of online videos, understanding the role of information presentation format in online decision-making becomes crucial. Existing research in information systems and marketing have looked at information presentation formats and online reviews but very little research has considered the fit between online review presentation format and decision-making stage. In this research we are primarily interested in developing the novel concept of format-stage fit, based on the notion that reviews' presentation formats have a varying impact on users' perceptions when users are in different decision-making stages. Accordingly, we propose that a review in pallid format (e.g., text) may be a better fit in choice-reduction stage whereas a review in vivid format (e.g., video) may be a better fit in choice-selection stage. We conduct a lab study to test the research model. The findings are expected to enhance our understanding of information presentation and decision making in online commerce. Collapse

Abstract: This study examines how the unique information environment of online forums affects consumers' information acquisitions, and further impacts their purchase behavior. Based on the information foraging theory, we hypothesize that the relevant information patches in online forums facilitate consumers' information acquisition processes and increase purchase intention. However, the mixed information scents within online forums could also lead to fewer or no purchases because of distraction from unrelated information. To test the proposed hypotheses, we empirically analyze a unique data set of consumers' webpage browsing histories and purchase behavior from a major online travel agency in China. The findings of this study provide insights into how online forum browsing behavior affects consumers' purchase decisions. The findings also offer important implications for online forum design. Abstract: The literature highlights the importance of product review information to a consumer, but limited knowledge exists on the provision of such information in a shopping website. This research uses information foraging theory (IFT) to determine how to provide product reviews. Product reviews differ according to whether the content is mainly on product attributes (i.e., attribute-oriented product reviews) or usage experience (i.e., usage-oriented product reviews). Two empirical studies were conducted. Study 1 examined consumer information diet for product reviews using the think-aloud approach. Results showed that consumers use two different genres of product review information sequentially (1) to follow product attribute-oriented review information during the screening phase and (2) to forage for product usage-oriented review information during the evaluation phase. The findings were extended to Study 2 through a field experiment, in which different patches of product reviews were purposefully and sequentially given in accordance with the consumer information diet for product reviews. The results revealed that an online shopping website could offer varying genres of product reviews at different junctures to enhance consumers’ decision-making performance. This research presents empirical evidence on the effectiveness of embedding product review information on a shopping website. This work further contributes to IFT, which is traditionally descriptive and conceptual in nature, by theorizing information provision and information-foraging behaviors of online consumers. Abstract: Users are increasingly sharing their product interests and experiences with others on e-commerce websites. For example, users can “tag” products using their own words, and these “product tags” then serve as navigation cues for other users who want to search for products. Also, socially endorsed information contributors are sometimes highlighted on websites and serve as direct information sources. This study examines the effects of these two distinct social product search cues, product tags and socially endorsed people, on users’ perceived diagnosticity and serendipity of their product search experience. While product tags support product navigation via a variety of product features tagged by the community, access to socially endorsed people enables users to browse diverse and high-quality alternatives favored by these individuals. We constructed an experimental website using real data from one of the largest social-network-based product-search websites in China to conduct an empirical study. The results of this study show that product tags help users to locate and evaluate relevant alternatives, thus enhancing the perceived diagnosticity of product search, whereas the integration of product tags and access to socially endorsed people enables users to conduct even more serendipitous searches. In addition, both perceived diagnosticity and perceived serendipity of a search experience positively affect users’ decision satisfaction. Abstract: Research has consistently shown that online word-of-mouth (WOM) plays an important role in shaping customer attitudes and behaviors. Yet, despite their documented utility, explicit user scores, such as star ratings have limitations in certain contexts. Automatic sentiment analysis (SA), an analytics technique that assesses the “tone” of text, has been proposed as a way to deal with these shortcomings. While extant research on SA has focused on issues surrounding the design of algorithms and output accuracy, this research-in-progress examines the behavioral and interface design issues in regards to SA scores as perceived by their intended users. Specifically, in an online context, we experimentally investigate the role of product (product category) and review characteristics (review extremity) in influencing the perceived usefulness of SA scores. Further, we investigate whether variations in how the SA scores are presented to the user, and the nature of the scores themselves further affect user perceptions. Collapse

Abstract: This study provides a model for assessing the likelihood of preferring internet as a health information source from a theoretical lens of information foraging using the HINTS 2014 data. Essentially, this study tries to answer the key question – When do patients prefer to use internet for health information over other sources such as government agencies, physicians etc.? This study focuses on preference to internet for health information by patients suffering from cancer. This paper contributes to the growing literature on health information seeking by providing a theoretical model to identify the organic antecedents of preference to internet sources for health information by users. The findings of the study provide a deeper understanding of the relationships between information seeking preferences of cancer patients and trust in various sources of health information as well as perceived value and search costs associated with the information foraging behavior. Abstract: As competition online increases, website owners investigate ways in which they can attract and retain more users. One avenue is to reduce frustration and stress for the users. Furthermore, many website users are rushed when browsing for specific information on a website. To save time and prevent frustration, website owners should try to maximize information scent, that is, visual, audio, and semantic cues that are meant to lead or guide the user to his or her informational goal. This paper presents and tests a model to predict how information scent can reduce the amount of stress that consumers experience when seeking information under time constraints. The study also demonstrates the relationships between information scent, time constraints, stress, performance, and attitudes toward the website. Results demonstrate that high information scent is an important design goal for a website, and latent semantic analysis can be a useful tool for measuring scent. In addition, rather than an attribute of an overall site, the concept of scent is demonstrated to be dependent on both the website and the task(s) being performed by the user. This finding demonstrates that to maximize users’ satisfaction and ability to accomplish their goals, website designers need to determine what tasks users need to accomplish, and to make sure that the links on each page point clearly to the appropriate destination to meet those goals. The latent semantic analysis tool can provide an indication of strength and clarity of the links. Clear links gain even more importance when considering the time constraints of users. Measurable stress explains some of the variance in performance and attitudes. Collapse

Abstract: Information security (IS) threats are increasingly pervasive, and search engines are being used by the public as the primary tool for searching for relevant information. This research investigates the following two questions: (1) How can different IS threats be characterized and distinguished in terms of their risk characteristics? and (2) how are risk characteristics related to public searches for information on IS threats? Applying psychometric analysis, our analyses of survey data first show that unknown risk and dread risk are two underlying dimensions that can characterize different IS threats. Drawing broadly on the literature of information foraging theory, we examine the influence of risk characteristics on public searches for information on these threats. We utilize a search engine log to extract searches related to IS threats. We develop and estimate a system of equations with correlated individual-specific error terms using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. We find that the two risk characteristics exert differential impacts on information search behavior (including types of information sought, number of pages viewed, and length of query). The implications for IS research and practice are discussed. Collapse
