Abstract: Social media are important channels for crisis and risk communication by government agencies. However, existing frameworks for studying these messages use loose and inconsistent terminology, making it difficult to build on this research and understand how message features impact message diffusion. In this study, we provide a framework based on textual and media dimensions of messages for improved analysis of social media crisis and risk communication. We apply the framework to a sample of Twitter posts from United States local, state and federal public health agencies during a year of the Covid-19 pandemic. Results show reasonable reliability levels for coding of message features; differences and similarities of messages across local, state and federal public health agencies; and significant associations between message features and message diffusion. The study contributes to research on crisis and risk messages, and our understanding of the impacts of message features on message diffusion. Collapse

Abstract: Premium fraud concerns data misrepresentation committed by an insurance customer with the intent to benefit from an unduly low premium at the underwriting of a policy. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for evaluating the risk of underwriting premium fraud at the time of application in the presence of potentially misrepresented self-reported information. The aim of the approach is to support insurance companies in iden­ tifying fraudulent applications and their decisions to underwrite insurance contract propositions. Likewise, it can be use to make straight-through processing (i.e. automated) underwriting systems more fraudproof, by e.g., triggering a validation on applications prone to misrepresentations. Our approach is based on conditional density estimates for a set of validated contracts. The proposed approach does not require historical fraud labels and can adapt to changes in pricing policy. Moreover, the approach can be used to detect outliers in addition to predicting underwriting fraud and is extended to multivariate self-reported data. We further demonstrate a link between Shapley values in common conditional expectation problems and conditional density estimations to make our approach explainable. We report a case study involving motor insurance underwriting, in which a driver’s identity and driving record can be misrepresented to benefit from an unduly low premium; the results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for detecting and preventing underwriting fraud. Abstract: Customer misbehavior is a serious and pervasive problem in firm-sponsored social media, yet prior studies provide limited insight into how firms should detect and manage it. To address this gap, we first develop a data science approach to detect customer misbehavior on social media and then devise intervention strategies to deter it. Specifically, we build on natural language processing and deep learning techniques to automatically detect customer misbehavior by mining customers’ social media activities in collaboration with a leading apparel firm. The results show that our algorithmic solution achieves superior performance, improving detection by 7%–9% compared with traditional methods. We then implement two types of intervention policies based on the focus theory of normative conduct that advocates the use of injunctive norms (i.e., a punishment policy) and descriptive norms (i.e., a common identity policy) to restrain customer misbehavior. We conduct field experiments with the firm to validate these policies. The experimental results indicate that punishment considerably reduces customer misbehavior in the short term, but this effect decays over time, whereas common identity has a smaller but more persistent effect on misbehavior reduction. In addition, punishing dysfunctional customers decreases their purchase frequency, whereas imposing a common identity increases it. Interestingly, our results show that combining the two policies effectively alleviates the detrimental effect of punishment, especially in the long run. We examine the heterogeneous treatment effect on novice and experienced customers. Finally, a follow-up field experiment reveals that the disclosure of the use of an artificial intelligence detector improves the effectiveness of the intervention strategies, and this effect is more pronounced for the punishment and combination strategies. Abstract: In this paper, we address the problem of assessing the social value of open data. While the number of open data initiatives increases and many data sets are currently available to lay people, common citizens and end users, a still limited number of studies specifically address how to improve open data understandability, their usability by common users and the measurability of their value in terms of concrete outcomes and benefits for the intended communities and the individual who appropriate those data, to make them more personal and hence more valuable. Our goal is to contribute to the success of open data initiatives by defining a methodology by which to assess their perceived social value. In this paper, we present the conceptual content of the methodology, that is its main concepts and logic structure, and discuss it by means of an empirical user study in which we applied it to real-life open data sets and involving a large sample of prospective consumers of those open data. In particular, we focus on the health care domain in order to improve the welfare of the citizens that need health care services and use the Web to look for relevant information to address those situated needs. Among our main findings, we discovered a clear preference for visual information formats by women with respect to men, and a clear preference for hospitals ranking by disease for senior people with respect to younger. Abstract: In addition to innate curiosity, many of us also see scientific research as a way of making the world a better place. There has been a drive to better understand and observe the practical and societal impact of research, led by researchers seeking to find meaning and purpose in their work, as well as government agencies responsible for allocating research funding to maximum effect. Despite a wealth of guidance from researchers discussing impact and agencies evaluating impact, making practice impact visible and demonstrable remains arduous to researchers because it appears to be possible only at the end of a long and winding pathway to impact. This article presents a framework for demonstrating practice impact as it is being realized progressively, rather than only at the end of the pathway. It identifies usable, in-use, and useful research outputs, with each having cumulative and demonstrable practice impact. Our analyses of existing impact evaluation guidelines and top-ranked impact cases submitted to the Research Excellence Framework 2014 showed that all three forms of impact can be demonstrated and are recognized as practice impact. Framing impact in terms of “use” inherently connects the perspectives of researchers and beneficiary users and positions users as co-producers of impact rather than passive objects and recipients of research. The 3U framework is descriptive as well as prescriptive. It identifies impact indicators for each form of impact. It also indicates the necessary actions for strengthening impact. When applied iteratively, the 3U framework facilitates the identification and pursuit of new research questions that will further solidify a research endeavour's practice impact. Collapse

Abstract: Since the inception of MISQ in 1977, information systems (IS) control and governance have been, and continue to be, vibrant research streams of key interest to the IS discipline. While both IS control and governance are concerned with ensuring the alignment of IS-related activities and information technology (IT) artifacts and resources (including human resources) with an organization's objectives and strategy, the two are often viewed as operating at different levels; with IS governance focusing on alignment mechanisms at the meso level and IS control focusing on managerial alignment mechanisms at the micro level. This curation summarizes IS control and governance research in MISQ. In total, we identified 53 papers-spanning the time period from 1978 to 2020-in which IS control (33 papers) or IS governance (20 papers) represent a central topic of the overall study. In the following, we review these papers in terms of research progression and thematic advances and portray them in an infographic (see Figure 1). Table 1 provides details of the 53 papers. Collapse

There is a relative lack of research on Instagram and communities of this kind. Focusing on the development of the Libraries of Instagram community, we consider the importance of hashtag campaigns in generating a community space. Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT)is a prominent concept in academic and technology business discourse in recent times reflecting a wider trend to connect physical objects to the Internet and to each other. This idea of connect things started in the beginning of the 2008 through RFID. But after the open hardware initiatives (as Arduino), it gained more visibility and access to experiments with sensors in the environment. The IoT is already generating an unprecedented volume of data in greater varieties and higher velocities. Making sense of such data is an emerging and significant challenge. Infographics are visual representations that provide a visual space for end users to compare and analyze data, information, and knowledge in a more efficient form than traditional forms. The nature of IoT requires a continuum modification in how end users see information to achieve such efficiency gains. Conceptualizing and implementing infographics in an IoT system can thus require significant planning and development for both data scientists, graphic designers and developers resulting in both costs in terms of time and effort. To address this problem, this paper presents SiMoNa, a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) to create, connect, interact, and build interactive infographic presentations for IoT systems efficiently based on the model-driven development (MDD) paradigm.
