Abstract: Virtual reality (VR) technologies have gained a steady increase in attention and use in organizations across various industries in recent years. A useful application scenario is VR training, enabling employees to immersively and interactively familiarize with or practice work processes in a safe space without the risk of physical harm or financial consequences for the organization. This research explores how tool representation alternatives in virtual reality training scenarios (VRTS) affect user experience and content transfer. In a two-stage research approach, a total of 20 participants are randomly assigned to one of two VRTS with different tool representation types and interviewed subsequently. The findings indicate that decisions regarding tool representation in VRTS should be based on tool-independent (e.g., the feeling of tool operation) and tool-dependent factors (e.g., tool complexity). Abstract: With the growing digitalization of businesses, digital security governance (DSG) is becoming central to organizational survival strategies. However, many organizations fail to establish successful DSG practices and, consequently, fail to understand how DSG can lower the severity of cybersecurity failures. This paper aims to contribute to filling this gap. By putting the five principles of the High Reliability Organization (HRO) central to the design of our qualitative investigation, we engage in interviewing forty-two chief information security officers (CISOs) and chief information officers (CIOs) of large organizations in the Netherlands about their views on why organizations fail to successfully achieve DSG. Our data show that HRO principles are partly relevant but lacking in DSG approaches, which potentially increases security failure. We conclude this paper by discussing these findings in light of future research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: City governments incorporate ICTs into government services to improve citizen participation and access to those services. Too much dependence on technology, however, can lead to concerns about creating a digital divide between different groups of citizens. The potential for digital inequality is a critical issue that can be exacerbated by insufficient attention being paid to vulnerabilities across communities. Given that socio-economically vulnerable populations are the ones who need government services the most, especially during disaster events, it is critical to investigate the extent to which digital inequality is an issue for technology-based government services. With this in mind, this paper analyzes the use of different technology-enabled access options for a representative eGovernment service system, the New York City 311 service system, in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Two sets of socio-economically distinct locations in New York City are compared, using average income as a proxy for vulnerability, to draw conclusions about potential inequalities in such a system during a crisis. Abstract: Many information technology (IT) projects in the U.S. federal government have been plagued with failures and overruns in recent years, wasting a large amount of tax revenues and undermining the public’s confidence in the government’s ability to manage such resources and deliver on its commitments. What affects the performance of IT projects in the federal government? We find that prior literature on IT project management from the private sector setting is inadequate to answer this question. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, information systems (IS) research thus far has not considered how the decision-making authority of an IT unit influences IT project performance at the organizational level. We leverage several unique characteristics of the public sector, vis-à-vis for-profit firms, in developing our theory and hypothesis. Utilizing official datasets on IT projects and human resource records, we find that the more IT managerial officials and supervisors a federal bureau has, the lower time overruns it experiences in its IT projects. Interestingly, this relationship is weakened when the bureau has a larger number of ongoing IT projects. Our findings offer new theoretical insights for the IT project management literature and provide meaningful policy insights into government IT management. Collapse

Abstract: Long term sustainability in a competitive and changing environment requires an organization to continuously learn and adapt. The ability to access and use new knowledge is contingent on the organisational absorptive capacity (AC). In this paper, we focus on how an organization’s absorptive capacity and its enterprise system practices develop and co-evolve over time. Analysing a fifteen years’ ERP practice in an organisational context, this study synthesizes a new AC analysis framework that takes into account the dynamic nature of AC. This high-level analysis coupled with a longitudinal view resolves inconsistent results between current AC studies and suggest further directions for organisational AC research. Collapse

Abstract: Nowadays, IT operations devolve many tasks in IT services to internal customers (i.e., IT self-service). The rationale for this service task devolvement is often to reduce the IT personnel’s workload. However, prior research has shown that IT operations often fail to achieve this goal. Existing methods for modeling and analyzing services fall short of supporting service providers in identifying and specifying service tasks suitable to be devolved to (internal) customers. This paper presents, therefore, the first method for devolving service tasks in IT services (DESERV IT). DESERV IT is a compound of four method components encompassing a joint meta-model, a visual notation for modeling IT services, and procedural recommendations. The DESERV IT meta-model extends the meta-model of service blueprinting by means of concepts required to analyze service task devolvement. DESERV IT is evaluated in four evaluation episodes. The results of the evaluation episodes show that DESERV IT is perceived as effective, useful, complete, and generalizable by experts in the IT service management and enterprise architecture discipline. This paper contributes to enterprise modeling by demonstrating the feasibility of DESERV IT in an example case and describing DESERV IT’s evolution during the evaluation episodes. Abstract: Despite the growing adoption of AI in business operations, the potential differential effects of AI adoption on individual workers remain ambiguous. Drawing on the unique microdata of an on-demand food delivery platform, we investigate the impact of AI adoption on the labor productivity of delivery workers at different skill levels. Our results show that AI adoption enhances the workers' labor productivity by 3% on average. The enhancement effect was concentrated on low-and middle-skilled drivers (6.5% and 5%, respectively) without a significant effect on the high-skilled. Furthermore, the labor productivity gap involved improvements in overall system efficiency and customer service quality. Our study provides a piece of empirical evidence that introducing AI to markets with a significant labor productivity gap may bridge this gap and yield a Pareto improvement for all stakeholders. Abstract: The continuing proliferation of data science these days is causing organizations to reassess their workforce demands. Simultaneously, it is unclear what types of job roles, knowledge, skills, and abilities make up this field and how they differ. This ambiguity is generating a misleading myth around the Data Scientist's role. Against this background, this paper attempts to provide clarity about the heterogeneous nature of job roles required in the field of data science by processing 25,104 job advertisements published at the online job platforms Indeed, Monster, and Glassdoor. We propose a text mining approach combining topic modeling, clustering, and expert assessment. Therefore, we identify and characterize six job roles in data science that are in a request by organizations, described by topics classified in three major knowledge domains. An understanding of job roles in data science can help organizations in acquiring and cultivating job roles to leverage data science effectively. Collapse
