Abstract: As the world moves ever forward into a digital future, the need for responsible digital innovation (RDI) becomes increasingly urgent. This paper presents the access-control-transparency (ACT) theory, a simple yet powerful framework for guiding designers and developers in creating digital artifacts that embody the principles of responsible design. With a focus on promoting access, control, and transparency, this theory aims to address the dark side of digital innovation and ensure that new technologies are developed in a way that considers their impact on individuals, communities, and society. The paper also explores avenues for future research, including the impact of ACT-driven design principles on organizational and societal outcomes, the role of individual and organizational values in the RDI process, and the incorporation of human-centric design and ongoing reflection into the ACT theory. Abstract: Universities are currently under pressure from multiple fronts: students questioning their value propositions due to rising tuition costs, employers being frustrated at the skill gap and lack of experience in recent graduates, and communities asking for higher societal impacts from local universities. Facing these challenges, universities have focused on experiential learning to bridge the gap between education and practice while increasing community engagement. In this paper, we use a case study approach to present the experiential learning model at iD Lab, DePaul University. The success of the iD Lab comes from a tight coupling of experiential learning and engaged scholarship. Three illustrative projects show keys to success are good relationships with the clients and high-quality product deliverables. Collapse

Abstract: Complementary assets play an important role in shaping an innovation’s commercialization success. In this paper, we broaden the locus of complementarities to examine the role of complementary technologies residing in the business ecosystems that are becoming an important source of value creation for innovating firms. We argue that, on one hand, complementary technologies help innovations create more value for their users. On the other hand, they can also limit the focal innovation’s value creation by exposing them to performance bottlenecks as the underlying technological architecture of the ecosystem evolves. We further extend the notion of specialization of complementary assets to ecosystems by considering complementary technologies that are specialized to a focal ecosystem and those that are available across multiple ecosystems. We highlight that, although the complementary technologies that are specialized to an ecosystem facilitate greater value creation, they are more likely to subject the focal innovation to performance bottlenecks. Evidence from 244,034 apps launched by software developers for Apple’s iPhone ecosystem during 2008–2015 offers strong support for our framework. In summary, the study sheds light on the value creation tradeoff for firms innovating in business ecosystems—the opportunities associated with leveraging complementarities and the challenges associated with managing technological interdependencies. Abstract: Marginalized communities globally encounter grand challenges such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and sustained livelihoods. Several initiatives to address these complex, global problems have resulted in fragmented solutions. Recognizing this, there have been several calls for the study of responsible innovation (RI) to address grand challenges. Digital platforms such as AirBnB, Uber and so forth have now become commonplace and are known to generate economic value but also face criticism for being exploitative and exclusive. Only a handful of studies show how similar platforms can innovate responsibly to serve marginalized communities by generating simultaneous economic and social value. To address this gap, our study examines the cases of two platforms that orchestrated ecosystems consisting of individuals from marginalized communities, government agencies, and other entities to provide physical, digital and societal solutions based on principles of RI. We contribute to the RI and IS literatures to show how RI solutions can be fostered through digital platforms to address grand challenges. The article provides empirical evidence of all four dimensions of the RI framework—anticipation, reflexivity, inclusion, and responsiveness - and their operationalization through digital platforms. This research lays the foundation for future studies at the intersection of RI and digital platforms literature. The study also provides practice insights on developing digital platform solutions for marginalized communities to address grand challenges and is useful to policymakers to formulate appropriate interventions. Abstract: Enterprise architecture (EA) is a systematic approach used for designing and implementing changes in technological systems and processes to improve organizational performance and align technology with business. This paper unpacks the process through which EA moves from strategic-level endorsement to diffusion across organizations. The insights provided are based on a longitudinal case study within the Norwegian hospital sector. An institutional work lens is adopted to analyze the purposeful activities carried out to introduce EA in Norwegian hospitals providing a granular view on diffusion. The paper provides a rich description of the institutional work employed by the key actors involved mapping them to different turns in EA's trajectory. Drawing from this analysis, we contribute to Information Systems literature with a conceptual model that illustrates how institutional work can mitigate the challenges of moving from the strategic-level endorsement of novelty to its diffusion and institutionalization smoothing downturns along the way. The findings indicate ways to facilitate the introduction of EA within complex organizations, providing insights for practitioners involved in EA initiatives, and advancing extant EA research through an institutional perspective. Abstract: IT architecture forms the digital core of contemporary organisations; thus, architecture work directly concerns the transformation of these organisations. The literature on architecture work and architecting has identified the principles, styles and characteristics that define the policy ideals of architecture work and has demonstrated how these drivers play out in real-world projects. With an in-depth case study, we add to this literature by investigating the multilevel challenges that architects address in transforming large-scale infrastructures and how major challenges come to the surface during the architecting process. Our empirical evidence comes from our longitudinal investigation in a large health region in Norway. We offer two contributions. First, identification and a rich description of three modes of architecting framed as functional, spatial and temporal dualities. Second, we integrate the empirical data into a process model and theorise how contextual and professional drivers are transformed through the architecting modes and form the actual results. Collapse

Abstract: This paper proposes a framework for considering how practice diffusion drives the adoption of IoT technology and fuels institutionalization of solutions within service ecosystems. Practice diffusion requires the adaptation of a practice (using a wearable device) as it emerges across distinct sociocultural contexts. The adaptation of practices allows for the adoption of technology in different ways. New materials are linked with pre-existing meanings and competences as practices emerge and become embedded within a social structure. For IoT technologies, materials include a device and its associated digital data. Thus, practice adaptation requires linkages that enable the integration and use of both a device and data. We highlight a growing mental health crisis and the potential of wearable devices as medical aids, particularly for adolescents who spend much of their time connected to the internet. We consider important linkages to help institutionalize unique solutions for those in need. Collapse

Abstract: Design science research addresses important, complex real-world problems. Although well-accepted as part of research in information systems, initiating or progressing a design science research project still requires effort to describe how knowledge creation emerges and its underlying dynamics. Given the existing body of knowledge on design science research, it should be possible to learn from that knowledge to progress future work. This paper analyzes design science research projects to identify and make explicit their knowledge contributions while recognizing the plurality of a project's knowledge contributions with respect to a project's knowledge scope and knowledge goals. The construct of a path of knowledge types is introduced that represents how knowledge con­ tributions are dynamically created throughout a project. These paths form the basis for the derivation of seven design science research strategies, which lead to guidelines for initiating or progressing a project. This effort is compared to other research that analyzes the growing body of work in design science with respect to knowledge contributions and project classifications. Collapse

Abstract: Sustainable business success is essential for achieving performance in a market in the contemporary technology age. Worldwide, businesses should overcome a number of challenges by using an innovative practices and technologies to achieve long-term business sustainability. This study intended to inspect the relationship between knowledge management systems (KMS) and sustainable business, and to examine the moderating role of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in the relationship. To achieve this objective, we collect data from Iraqi firms. Using structural equation modelling, the finding of this study show that knowledge management systems significantly increased sustainable business. In addition, AI adoption moderates the relationship between KMS and sustainable business. Hence, this research makes significant implications to literature and policymakers regarding applying and understanding knowledge management systems and AI adoption to enhance sustainable business. Abstract: This paper examines the continuous intention by healthcare professionals to use the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) in combination with responsible artificial intelligence (AI). Using the theory of Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), a model was developed to determine the continuous intention to use IoMT taking into account the risks and complexity involved in using AI. Data was gathered from 276 healthcare professionals through a survey questionnaire across hospitals in Bahrain. Empirical outcomes reveal nine significant relationships amongst the constructs. The findings show that despite contradictions associated with AI, continuous intention to use behaviour can be predicted during the diffusion of IoMT. This study advances the understanding of the role of responsible AI in the continued use of IoMT in healthcare and extends DOI to address the diffusion of two innovations concurrently. Collapse
