Abstract: Human Computer Interaction scholars have predominantly adopted a "user-centered" approach to study changes in product functions and aesthetics. Relatively few, however, have explored how designers radically innovate by proposing new product meaning with digital technology. Product meaning refers to an impression, conveyed collectively by a defining set of functional and/or aesthetic qualities of a product, that cause it to be perceived as a particular kind of product. We draw on design and innovation theories and use comparative case studies of electric vehicle to articulate three mechanisms by which designers propose "what would be desirable" for users: designers use digital technology (1) as a part of the product, in the process of delivering product, and in new contexts to propose innovative meaning (2) to collect user feedback, and (3) to selectively take user feedback to re-propose innovative meaning. The paper extends previous usercentered IS literature with a designer-centered approach. Collapse

Abstract: Design Science Research (DSR) in the information systems (IS) field is, at its essence, about Digital Innovation (DI). Innovative sociotechnical design artifacts involve digital information technologies (IT) being used in ways that result in profound disruptions to traditional ways of doing business and to widespread societal changes. The pervasiveness of DI means that the individuals involved in bringing it about have diverse backgrounds, including application specialists, software engineers, data scientists, business managers, economists, venture capitalists, various user groups, and entrepreneurial leaders. This range of backgrounds means that DI, much more than traditional innovation, leads to varied perspectives on the methods and tools to be used in the development of effective and evolvable complex systems incorporating digital innovations. In this paper we present a new matrix approach to DI based on DSR, entrepreneurship, and innovation theories. Clear strategic guidance allows these multiple stakeholders to make sense of the diverse landscape and to understand when and how different entrepreneurial strategies for innovation can best be applied. We define the combined DSR and DI matrix approach in terms of four strategies: invention; advancement; exaptation; and exploitation and their associated DI practices. The research contribution is a novel DSR-DI matrix process model. This model extends entrepre neurship theory as it enriches effectuation thinking with more detailed process guidance for ambidextrous entrepreneurship and it enriches DSR models for DI by showing more explicitly the different pathways corre sponding to different quadrants in the knowledge-innovation matrix. Abstract: Lead users are often established in an organizational innovation process to attenuate the difficulties a company faces, such as high costs or the obscurity of customers’ needs. But to benefit from these lead users a major challenge is to characterize and identify them especially in the fast-moving world of social media. Therefore, we aim to design a tool to identify lead users automatically for the two innovation phases (“Idea generation” and “Development”) by combining different approaches such as social network analysis, topic modeling and sentiment analysis. Thus, we consulted the design science approach and applied our artifact to 11,481 contributions of an online digital platform. The technical realization of the six different characteristics and their respective weighting according to the different phases of the innovation process resulted in different lead users and showed the necessity of distinguishing between them. Our results were evaluated and confirmed by the identified lead users and an expert. Hence, our investigation contributes to both practice and theory (kernel theories and design theory) alike. Abstract: In this case study we investigate a cultural heritage incubator, using theoretical constructs suggested suitable for the study of digital innovation in openended value landscapes or ecosystems. Interviews are conducted with eight entrepreneurial firms participating in the incubator, who develop digital innovations within the cultural heritage domain, representatives from museums, also a document study and active participation in incubator activities has been utilized for data collection. A content analysis was conducted using a deductive approach where theoretical constructs from digital innovation literature were used to derive themes connected to concepts of value creation and value capture, value co-creation and co-destruction as well as value spaces paths and recombination. Recommendations are made and the ability of existing theoretical constructs to capture the specific characteristics of the case are made. Collapse

Abstract: A better understanding of the linkage between the objectives and outcomes of innovation will enable firms to plan better for effective utilization of their resources for generation of innovation. The current study enhances the understanding of relationships between the intent to innovate and eventual outcome as the intent to innovate drives complex processes and resource allocation that leads to a successful innovation. We analyze the World Bank innovation survey data of IT firms in China and find that drivers of innovation significantly impact the configuration elements of the innovation phenomenon within firms and influence how firms execute collaboration with external partners. This is turn impacts the product and process innovation generated by the firm. The findings imply that firms should decide about their choice of partners for innovation and the mode of engagement with the partners based on the drivers for innovation. Collapse

Abstract: Information systems literature has cast organizational information security practices as a form of innovation. Using the notions of innovation adoption and diffusion of innovations, this paper develops an integrative model grounded in two theoretical perspectives- diffusion of innovation theory and the technologyorganization- environment framework-to examine the adoption of information security solutions (ISS) in organizations. We specify four innovation characteristics that are specific to ISS (compatibility, complexity, costs, and perceived gain), two organizational factors (organizational readiness and top management support), and two environmental factors (external pressure and visibility) as influential toward ISS adoption. We tested our model using data collected through a survey of 368 information systems managers in North American organizations. Our findings are insightful and have important theoretical and practical implications. Overall, the results suggest that organizational and environmental factors contribute to the extent of ISS adoption above and beyond characteristics of ISS themselves. The results are consistent across two measures of ISS adoption- perceived and (self-reported) actual-thereby supporting the robustness of our findings. Collapse

Abstract: A fundamental question in corporate strategy is how headquarters in multibusiness firms can create value above and beyond the burden of its own overhead. The leading theories from Chandler and Williamson hold that this is possible through resource allocation across businesses. Yet, there are multibusiness firms for whom reallocation opportunities are limited—e.g., chains. Accordingly, we propose, model, and test an alternative theory, one in which headquarters facilitates market-like dynamics between businesses that fuel innovation and growth. Whereas Chandler’s and Williamson’s theories involve the visible hand of managers, ours involves an invisible hand of managers. We construct an interacting agent model of the theory, which yields three propositions relating multibusiness structure to firm growth. We test those propositions in the banking industry and obtain results consistent with the model’s predictions. In particular, knowledge growth increases in the number of units and heterogeneity in their knowledge, and increases then decreases in their geographic distance. Interestingly, once we account for these structural elements, scale and hierarchy both suppress innovation. Thus, neither Williamson’s nor Chandler’s theories hold in our setting (consistent with the argument motivating the need for an additional theory). Collapse
