Abstract: While digital firms are playing an increasingly important role in the world economy, their international expansion remains an emergent topic for international business researchers. We still lack a clear understanding of the characteristics and patterns of internationalisation by digital firms. This study aims to address this research gap by examining the path of digital firms’ international expansion. Applying the research methods of tabulation analysis and mini case study, our study reveals that digital firms expand into foreign markets in a way that significantly differs from conventional brick-and-mortar firms, thus questioning explanations provided by extant internationalisation theories. Three patterns of digital firms’ internationalization are identified. Based on analysis of archival data, this study contributes to theoretical development of internationalisation theory and provides guidance to managers of digital firms creating and implementing international expansion strategies. Abstract: The question of how social enterprises (SEs)—organizations that work to solve social issues through innovative ideas and strategies—utilize the web to internationalize has received little attention in electronic business literature. We address this issue by examining whether SEs pursue a web globalization strategy that is standardized across national markets or localized and culturally customized to individual locales. Accepted knowledge about e-commerce corporations predicts that these firms would be better off with web localization. However, an investigation using content analysis and two case studies complemented with face-to-face and digital interviews reveals that SEs differ inherently from for-profit businesses in web globalization. Specifically, this paper shows that SEs adopt a web strategy high on standardization to mobilize, educate, advocate, and recruit would-be donors, influencers, and volunteers. Such a strategy allows SEs to build legitimacy and reinforce their global brand. Our empirical findings show the uniqueness of SEs’ digital context from profit-oriented e-commerce corporations and the need for a suitable theoretical framework. Collapse

Abstract: Exportation is an important growth strategy for family small and medium enterprises (family SMEs). However, exporting across multiple countries is challenging and requires substantial investment to tackle foreign market entry barriers. This barrier can be resolved by building network relationships with foreign markets; however, family firms are rarely strategic in forming international network relationships due to the fear of losing their socio-emotional wealth. Our study aims to address "How to select a business relationship that can stimulate the internationalization process while preserving the socioemotional wealth in family SMEs?". Among available business relationships, digital platformswith the capabilities to provide instantaneous access to global marketshas emerged as the most potential virtual partner for family SMEs. We draw on the Uppsala network-based internationalization model, supplemented by socio-emotional wealth (SEW) theory, to explain the role of digital platforms in family firms' internationalization. We show that SEW preservation in family firms negatively affects the formation of international network relationships, but this negative effect is mitigated under the collaboration with trusted digital platform partners. Thus, we contribute to international business and family business studies, providing a clear direction for future research through the incorporation of digital platforms into existing family firms' internationalization theories. Abstract: The internationalization of software firms has been widely researched topic over the last two decades. However, the most of the studies have treated software firms as a homogeneous group, ignoring the fact that software firms actually differ greatly in terms of having either a product or a service orientation. Based on earlier literature, we hypothesized that software product firms would show a tendency to internationalize earlier and at a smaller size than software service firms, and that product firms would show a greater tendency to target countries that are both geographically and culturally distant. In fact, we found no support for most of our hypotheses, with relatively strong and statistically significant results emerging in the opposite direction. We offer several explanations for these counterintuitive findings. Collapse

Abstract: Alliance research has traditionally focused on structural and relational aspects of the networks in which firms are situated, paying less attention to the inherent characteristics of their partners. This study introduces the notion of alliance portfolio internationalization (API), which refers to the degree of foreignness of partners in a firm's collection of immediate alliance relationships. We develop a framework to explain how API impacts firm performance. We suggest that as a firm's API increases, financial performance is expected to initially decline, then improve, and finally decline again. This sigmoid relationship between API and financial performance is ascribed to evolving learning effects that shape the net benefits of API. When the firm's alliance portfolio, on average, consists of proximate foreign partners, the firm may fail to recognize latent national differences, but at moderate levels of API, its absorptive capacity and specialized collaborative routines support the exchange of valuable network resources. Nevertheless, high levels of API undermine firm performance because of the failure of collaborative routines and mounting liabilities of cross-national differences. We test the framework using data on the alliance portfolios of U.S.-based software firms from 1990 to 2001. The results provide support for the sigmoid relationship as well as for our predictions that firms, which have gained experience with foreign partners and maintained wholly owned subsidiaries in their partners' countries of origin, can overcome some of the liabilities of API and better leverage its benefits.
