Abstract: With the increased focus on responding to climate change by accelerating a transition to a low carbon energy system, differing views remain on the combination of energy technologies that will best achieve this goal. Identifying technological pathways is complicated by wide uncertainties in economic and technological factors. Analyses that neglect these uncertainties can produce pathways for a low carbon energy future that are highly granular and specific, but which are based on a particular assumption about future conditions and imply a need to make specific technology commitments over a long period of time. We frame the energy transition problem as the identification of one near-term investment strategy that is flexible across a wide range of possible future costs, followed by many alternative subsequent investment plans, each of which responds to realized future costs to achieve an aggressive emissions reduction target. Using an example of planning a low carbon power system under uncertainty, we demonstrate the option value of not ruling out some energy technologies in the near-term. Collapse

Abstract: Start-ups have revolutionised many economic ecosystems, becoming innovation pioneers around the world. Most are based on data-driven business models, particularly relying on machine learning technologies. However, not all start-ups that use machine learning technologies manage to create and capture value. The existing literature on the use value enabled by information technologies does not take into account the unique capabilities of machine learning. The theory of data network effects offers a promising explanation of how to create value using machine learning. However, it does not explicitly describe how to capture value using machine learning. In contrast, business model theory explains how companies use technologies to create and capture value, but not specifically through the use of machine learning technology. Therefore, this study aims to improve the theo­ retical understanding of the key drivers of value creation and capture in start-ups with business models driven by this kind of technology. Statistical techniques are used in a sample of 122 start-ups to explore the theoretical relationships between these two theories. The analysis reveals the link between specific value creation and capture factors of the two theories, such as efficiency, novelty, and performance expectancy. The study also provides evidence of the need to adopt a co-evolutionary perspective of value creation and capture through the use of machine learning. Collapse

Abstract: Flow, the holistic sensation people experience when they act with total involvement, is a known driver for desired work outcomes like task performance. However, the increasing ubiquity of IT at work can disrupt employees' flow. Thus, the impact of IT-mediated interruptions on flow warrants more attention in research and practice. We conducted a NeuroIS laboratory experiment focusing on a typical office work task-an invoice matching task (i.e., matching customer payments to invoices). We manipulated interruption frequency (low, high) and content relevance (irrelevant, relevant) to study the impact of interruptions on self-reported flow, its dimensions, and high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV; calculated from electrocardiography recordings) as a proxy for parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activation. We found that content relevance moderated the relationship between interruption frequency and self-reported flow and that these results vary along flow dimensions. Content relevance also moderated the relationship between interruption frequency and PNS activation. Abstract: Needmining is the process of extracting customer needs from user-generated content by classifying it as either informative or uninformative regarding need content. Contemporary studies achieve this by utilizing machine learning. However, models found in the literature cannot be compared to each other because they use private data for training and testing. This study benchmarks all previously suggested needmining models including CNN, SVM, RNN, and RoBERTa. To ensure an unbiased comparison, this study samples and annotates a dataset of customer reviews for products from 4 different categories from amazon. Henceforth, the dataset is publicly available and serves as a gold-set for future needmining benchmarks. RoBERTa outperformed other classifiers and seems to be best suited for needmining. The relevance of this study is reinforced by the fact that this benchmark creates a different hierarchy between models than otherwise suggested by comparing the results of previous studies. Collapse

Abstract: Software-as-a-service applications are experiencing immense growth as their comparatively low cost makes them an important alternative to traditional software. Following the initial adoption phase, vendors are now concerned with the continued usage of their software. To analyze the influence of different measures to improve continued usage over time, a longitudinal study approach using data from a SaaS vendor was implemented. Employing a linear mixed model, the study finds several measures to have a positive effect on a software’s usage penetration. In addition to these activation measures performed by the SaaS vendor, software as well as client characteristics were also examined, but did not display significant estimates. The findings emphasize the need for proactive activation initiatives to raise usage penetration. More generally, the study contributes novel insights into the scarcely researched field of influencing factors on SaaS usage continuance. Collapse

Abstract: We focus on the equity problem of the IT-enabled public bike share systems and posit that shared bicycles become a heavily reliant mode of transportation in low-income neighborhoods during abrupt suspensions of subway systems caused by disasters. Although bike share is known to provide many social benefits, it has been often criticized for having low usage and lazy expansion among low-income neighborhoods. We leverage a natural experiment setting to estimate the effect of flood damage to subway lines on the demand for public bike share service. Through a quasi-experiment analysis, we find that the effect of flood significantly increases bike share usage in low-income neighborhoods while not profoundly affecting usage in high-income neighborhoods. From the results, we shed light on the previously undiscovered role of bike share in the disaster management context and its role in mitigating the transportation disturbance of low-income commuters. Abstract: Software lab courses are in a paradoxical situation: teaching and experiencing software engineering processes requires large and complex projects as well as various tools but target students with extremely diverse prior knowledge, thus regularly overwhelming the more inexperienced ones. In this paper, we present a software lab course design: we expose teams of students to the full complexity of software development projects while simultaneously employing various systems that identify issues in teamwork or project progress and allow lecturers to provide on-demand support throughout all stages. Abstract: Sleep disorders associated with shift work impair alertness and increase risk of chronic physical and mental health disease. Though studying sleep aids in atrisk populations such as shift workers is critical to improving wellness, implementing robust studies to evaluate wellness interventions in live populations can be particularly challenging. We performed a prospective, single-subject design study in which we assessed the effect of noise-masking earbuds on sleep quality, sleepiness, and stress level in health care shift workers. Despite being gifted the technology at the end of the study, we faced poor participant accrual and study retention. Additionally, robust analysis of our intervention’s impact on post-shift alertness was underpowered due to variable participant scheduling. In order to make meaningful advances in improving wellness among such groups, studies emphasizing objective outcome measures while minimizing participant obligation to study protocols are ideal. Here, we discuss our experience studying a digital sleep intervention in a real-time setting and propose solutions for improving subject accrual, retention and methods for objective data collection in studies performed in a live shift worker population. Abstract: Various strands of work have explored how spatial proximity helps (metaphorically) bridge barriers to resource mobilization and foster knowledge transfer. However, much of that work takes spatial connectedness as a given. We argue that spatial connectedness is a distinct construct that affects the extent to which spaces are not just proximate but are actually able to link people, ideas, resources, and knowledge together. We explore one such source of connectedness—physical (not metaphorical) bridges. We find that the opening of newly built bridges enhances startup founding in the local geographic community. Beyond their impact on startup founding, newly built bridges also influence the organizing process for such ventures. This includes a positive impact on the entry of prospective founders into entrepreneurship and an increase in the number of early-stage investors. The subsequently founded ventures are also more likely to engage in recombination and to cross industry boundaries. We explore scope conditions around industry and connective heterogeneity. We also test for robustness to various modeling approaches. The discussion highlights contributions of these findings to the study of entrepreneurship, as well as of organizations and the institutional fields in which they operate. Collapse
