Abstract: The basic premise of iterative and evolutionary project management is that a project is divided into early, frequent, and short duration delivery steps. Each step attempts to deliver some real value to stakeholders. The increment size and iteration length usually depend on profitability, finance, deadline, and so on, rather than the functionality of a developing system. It is difficult to guarantee the correctness in every iteration step. In this article, we propose a method of ensuring the correctness of iterative design in terms of deadlock-freedom of the behavior of software. The method first obtains the correct (deadlock-free) atomic subsystems of a system using a decomposition approach. In the iterative development process, the method then requires that one atomic subsystem or the composition of multiple atomic subsystems should be regarded as one increment. Every increment is naturally correct and can be completely independently developed, independently deployed, and independently maintained. The currently released system in each iteration step is naturally guaranteed to be correct. It is not necessary for developers to consider the composition of the increment and the previously released system may cause flaws and errors. We also discuss the approach for ensuring correctness when design modifications are made in an iteration step. Finally, we explore the automatic decomposition of a system into multiple atomic subsystems and present the corresponding algorithm. A case demonstrates these results. Collapse

Abstract: Organizing knowledge workers for specific tasks in a software development process is critical for the success of software projects. Assigning workforce in software projects represents a dynamic and complex problem that concerns the utilization of cross-trained knowledge workers who possess different productivities and error tendencies in coding and defect correction. This complexity is further compounded when the development process follows a software release life cycle and involves major releases of alpha, beta, and final versions in the context of iterative software development. We study this knowledge workforce problem from three essential project management perspectives: (1) timeliness — obtaining shortest development time; (2) effectiveness — satisfying budget constraint; and (3) efficiency — achieving high workforce utilization. We explore ideal workforce composites with two strategic focuses on productivity and quality and with different scenarios of workload ratios. An analytical model is formulated and a meta-heuristic approach based on particle swarm optimization is used to derive solutions in a simulation experiment. Our findings suggest that forming an ideal workforce composite is a non-trivial task and task assignments with divergent focuses for software projects under different workload scenarios require different planning strategies. Practical implications are drawn from our findings to provide insight on effectively planning workforce for software projects with specific goals and considerations. Collapse

Abstract: Legislative mandates require the sharing of immunization information among multiple stakeholders. This in turn requires the implementation of interoperable systems across various information systems. A key challenge to system interoperability is the need to integrate healthcare information and processes across different settings. This paper reports work in progress on the development of a student immunization Health Information Exchange (HIE). The system builds on a commercially available platform, appropriately modified on both front and backend, to meet the needs of school health professionals and other stakeholders involved in the production and maintenance of immunization information. We describe the situated change perspective as well as the iterative and incremental development process adopted for the project, and examine some of the lessons learned throughout. Collapse

Abstract: The current demand for flexible software development makes software development organizations consider iterative and incremental development approaches as alternatives to the classical waterfall software development model. This, however, may jeopardize process visibility and manageability as well as product quality. Therefore, modern software development organizations need to find ways to install flexible development processes without sacrificing project overview and control. This paper reports experiences from a real life project that used timeboxing as the basic organizing principle in an incremental and iterative design and construction process. The project’s experiences show that such a process is indeed both flexible and manageable but that it requires periodic planning and replanning, explicit concern for coordination and synchronization activities, high process discipline and organizational readiness to accept fluctuating requirements.
