Abstract: Theory is an essential part of design research and helps us to explain what we see or guide what we design. In the paper, we shed light on how kernel theories are used in developing design principles in Design Science Research (DSR). We do this by reporting on a systematic literature review, from which we have extracted a set of six mechanisms to operationalize kernel theory. Each mechanism consists of an activity (e.g., "transform to" or "derive from") and an application point (e.g., meta-requirements or design principles) representing wherein the chain of concepts the kernel theory was used. The paper reflects on what we have learned about the use of kernel theories and translates this into recommendations and issues for further research. We provide researchers with guidance to use kernel theories more efficiently and give a big picture of the possibilities of kernel theory operationalization. Collapse

Abstract: Recently Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled conversational agents or chatbots (ICA hereafter) have been widely introduced in online customer service, and are expected to transform the frontline workforce. However, most studies from employees' perspectives have been qualitative in nature. Moreover, extant empirical studies perceive ICA as a tool rather than considering ICA as an AI-enabled digital workforce. Besides, rare papers moved further to explore the rooted psychological drivers (such as identity) underlying the employees' actions. To address these gaps, our paper integrates the identity theory and cooperation perspectives to examine the impact of ICA's human-like capability on employees' job identity through the enhancement in work experience. Our study is expected to provide an innovative perspective viewing ICA as a human-like agent rather than a tool in behavior studies. This study also enriches the identity theory and cooperation-competition theory and promotes their applications in IS literature. Collapse

Abstract: App work disrupted our traditional understanding of work as it introduced new technologies, such as algorithmic control. Based on the job characteristics theory, we put forward an important drawback of algorithmic control and a practice that might mitigate it. We test whether algorithmic control obstructs experiences of meaningful work through a lack of motivating job characteristics and the buffering role of bottom-up work design (i.e. job crafting). We conduct a daily diary study among 51 Belgian food app workers and test within-person relationships. Results show that on days that app workers experience high algorithmic control, they perceive their work as less meaningful than on days with little algorithmic control. Although daily motivating job characteristics could not explain this negative relationship, we found job crafting to enable app workers in attaining motivating job characteristics and meaningful work. Thereby we emphasize the importance of both top-down and bottom-up work design in a strive for meaningful work. Collapse

Abstract: Will AI shorten or increase amount of jobs? This question took one of the central places in the service literature debates. On the one hand side, the developers of the AI accentuate potential of the application to completely imitate human behaviour and overtake all human responsibilities. On the other hand, service workers and researchers emphasize the importance and uniqueness of a “human touch” in service work. In order to see how AI can affect the jobs of the service workers, we conducted a case study of a public service entity that introduced an intelligent chatbot in its customer centre. Particularly, we looked into how the implementation affects job characteristics (skills variety, task significance, task identity, autonomy, and feedback) of the frontline service workers. Collapse

Abstract: Agile information systems development (ISD) strives for a high amount of interaction between the agile team and stakeholders to ensure that high quality software within commonly defined project goals is produced. The literature has acknowledged that agile ISD significantly changes the work of team members. How do agile practices affect the work of stakeholders? Unfortunately, little theory exists to answer this question. This paper addresses this gap by investigating the effect of agile practices on stakeholders’ job satisfaction. Adopting a mixedmethods approach, we use a review of the literature with an exploratory case study to develop the theoretical model, which was evaluated with a survey among stakeholders in agile ISD projects. We contribute to agile ISD literature by providing empirical evidence on stakeholders’ job satisfaction and highlight the relevance of interaction and collaboration between team members and stakeholders in agile ISD projects. Abstract: This study seeks to broaden our understanding of the popular, yet under-researched, concept of micromanagement in the IT workforce by exploring IT professionals' trust in the competence of their supervisor as an antecedent to their perceptions of being micromanaged. The study also explores whether felt responsibility is the mechanism via which micromanagement negatively affects IT professionals' job satisfaction and organizational commitment, both proximal factors of turnover. These relationships are explored under the aegis of the Management Control Systems models, leader-member exchange theory, and the job characteristics model. Results indicate that trust in supervisor competence is a significant antecedent to IT professionals' perceptions of being micromanaged and that felt responsibility fully mediates the relationship between micromanagement and organizational commitment. The findings underscore the importance of building IT professionals' trust in their supervisor's competence and suggest that organizations proactively provide early intervention to negate the potential adverse impact on organizational outcomes. Abstract: Companies show a growing demand in corporate agility. The effects of so-called doing and being agile are the key for positive outcomes in agile work. Scrum is used by companies to make them more agile. The present study examines the interaction of doing agile (leadership, work design) and being agile (individual characteristics, empowerment) in relation to satisfaction and commitment based on an online survey of 129 Scrum development team members. The results show that work design and leadership impact empowerment and that the latter leads to both job satisfaction and commitment. Team orientation has no effect. Openness for new actions moderates the relationship between work design and the outcome variables. The results can be used in practice to increase the satisfaction and commitment within Scrum. They provide an insight into the impact structure within Scrum and are thus also the basis for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Agile can be seen as an accelerator to develop software, yet it suffers from bottlenecks between development and operations. DevOps can overcome bottlenecks between agile development teams and operations, notably by providing continuous integration, delivery and deployment, thus improving end-to-end processes between development and operations functions. However, literature on DevOps effects is scant. Using job design characteristics theory and Herzberg’s job satisfaction theory, this paper investigates perceptions of job (dis)satisfaction, risks and work conditions among 59 employees working within 12 agile and DevOps teams in the same firm. Findings show that DevOps provides greater job satisfaction than agile alone. However, this case study also unveiled an effect of risk amplification with DevOps, and the greater need to orchestrate automation and sharing, contingent on work conditions. We theorise that orchestration of interactions between automation and sharing and related risks must be managed to improve job satisfaction when agile teams transition to DevOps. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper we present a literature review on automation and robotic process automation (RPA). The review is developed into a conceptual framework that is grounded in a job characteristics model. The framework is used for analyzing empirical data from eleven semi-structured interviews in organizations that has adopted RPA. The research question explored is: How do employees perceive changes that Robotic Process Automation (RPA) has on their job characteristics? From the empirical data some conclusions can be drawn; the main conclusion being that the use of RPA has generated effects for the job characteristic "skill variety". In line with the literature, this conclusion suggests that RPA results in an upskilling, and that employees perceive an increased level of job enlargement, as well as job satisfaction, due to these changes. Abstract: This study examines crowdsourcing task characteristics (skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, feedback, and task clarity) and the online work situation factor; that is, the trust in evaluations on work effort in the crowdsourcing intermediary market. An e-questionnaire was released as a crowdsourcing task on the Time Fortune website in China; data from 231 valid questionnaires were analyzed using SmartPLS 3 software. Results show that under the conditions of this study, crowdsourcing workers’ internal motivation has a significant positive relationship with their effort. Task autonomy and feedback have significant and positive relationship with internal motivation. Skill variety, task significance, task clarity, and task identity have no significant correlation with internal motivation. However, task clarity has a significant and positive relationship with work effort. The study also finds that the effect of workers’ trust in the task requester on work effort is mediated by internal motivation. Collapse
