Abstract: We build on deontic justice and moral foundations theories to shed light on responses to sexual misconduct at work by proposing a model that explains why some third parties punish accusing victims and support alleged perpetrators. We theorize that when third parties are given conflicting he-said, she-said information, they intuitively evaluate organizational injustice based on moral values. We further theorize that binding moral foundations (loyalty, authority, purity) give rise to sympathy toward men accused of sexual misconduct and anger toward female accusers. Across five studies (total n = 5,413) utilizing archival, field, and vignette designs, we examined third-party responses to sexual misconduct accusations ranging in severity across several industries. Third-party endorsement of binding moral foundations was linked to increased perpetrator-directed sympathy and victim-directed anger (Studies 1–4). These emotions jointly mediated the relationship between binding values and credibility perceptions of the accusing victim and the alleged perpetrator (Studies 2 and 3). Moreover, victim credibility was negatively associated with social sanctions and punishment severity levied toward the accusing victim, and perpetrator credibility was negatively associated with the same punishment outcomes for the alleged perpetrator (Studies 3 and 4). In Study 5, we found that managers framing the accusing victim as disloyal exacerbated negative judgments and emotions toward the victim and positive judgments and emotions toward the perpetrator for individuals who highly ascribe to binding moral foundations. We discuss the theoretical contributions and practical implications of moral concerns on third parties’ emotions, judgments, and motivations to punish actors involved in sexual misconduct allegations. Abstract: Data breach recovery is often likened to service failure recovery. Like service failure recovery, compensation is a major factor toward data breach recovery. However, compensation involves different types, which may have varying effects on data breach recovery. This study investigates the effect of compensation types on customer's repatronage intentions to organizations that have suffered a data breach. Three compensation types were identified in this study: monetary, service, and psychological compensation. The findings of this study indicate that only service and psychological compensation have a significant effect on customers' perceptions of being treated fairly by the organization following a data breach. Furthermore, service compensation impacts the trust a customer regains in the company. Monetary compensation did not play a statistically significant role in the data breach recovery process. In turn, both perceived fairness and regained trust influences customer repatronage intentions. This study contributes to the information privacy field by identifying the types of compensation that are impactful to re-engage individuals who suffered PII related data breach. Collapse

Abstract: There is limited systematic research on managerial response strategies to online customer complaints and negative reviews. In this paper, we synthesize justice theory and service recovery literature to develop a model that explores the mechanisms through which appropriate managerial responses to customer complaints influence aggregate future review valence and complaints. We test our model using data from TripAdvisor.com, a leading travel review platform. Using text analysis (e.g., natural language processing and deep learning), we extract and code the variables in our model from the reviews and the managerial responses to these reviews. Key findings indicate that responding to customer reviews—in particular, negative reviews—will have a positive influence on future review valence. Moreover, responses with more rational cues than emotional cues to customer complaints about procedural unfairness will have a positive influence on future review valence. However, responses with more rational cues than emotional cues to customer complaints about interactional unfairness will have a negative influence on future review valence. Moreover, we find that when reviews have both distributive and interactional unfairness, responses with more rational cues matter. In addition, we find that both rational cues and emotional cues in responses to distributive unfairness and rational cues in responses to procedural unfairness are effective to decrease the future occurrence of similar complaints. Abstract: Thousands of people die while waiting for organ transplants due to a significant gap between demand and supply. This gap often leads to illegal activities and ethical issues such as illicit organ trade and auctions. Therefore, to increase the organ supply and procure more organs, organizations must understand the causes of families who refuse to consent to donate their loved one's organs. Furthermore, such organizations must better identify those families most likely to consent to organ donation. We propose a responsible AI framework that integrates network science and artificial intelligence to identify consent outcomes for organ donation. The proposed framework includes three phases: (1) collecting and pre-processing data, (2) creating new features and identifying root causes of family refusal, and (3) training and testing models to predict the probability of families granting consent for organ donation. The designed artifact included collaborative decisions and network measures, increasing explainability through network science. It integrated human reviews and assessment of risks which increases correct and interpretable predictions. Results can help encourage organ donations and reduce the illegal organ trade. The experimental results show that the designed artifact outperformed previous studies identifying factors affecting consent outcomes. This framework integrates network science and artificial intelligence to reduce maleficence, solve the lack of transparency (i.e., increase trustworthiness) and improve accountability of the model that aims to predict consent outcomes. Abstract: The use of Information Systems (ISs) utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) has expanded over the last decades, which has sparked discussion around AI's impacts on societal structures, such as democracy. Yet, in the light of existing research, our understanding of the relationship between AI and democracy is limited. Hence, this paper suggests approaching this relationship from the perspective of AI ethics. A framework dubbed AIDEM is suggested to a) gain deeper understanding of the relationship and b) enable justified critique and further suggestions for ethical AI to avoid uncontrolled erosion of democracy. The framework is tested by analysing ethical implications of the Spanish AI strategy in relation to Rawls's theory of justice and their potential impacts on deliberative democracy in the Spanish context. The analysis shows the AIDEM framework has potential to achieve its dual objective, although an inclusion of various other perspectives is still needed to complement the present analysis. Collapse

Abstract: Data breaches pose severe risks to companies. In fact, those incidents generate adverse effects on the customer relationship and companies’ financial performance. To this end, prior research has demonstrated that a dedicated response strategy to a data breach can mitigate these consequences. Nevertheless, contemporary research focuses on one-way response communication with the affected customer. Customers receive notification of the incident and are offered a pre-determined solution but are not actively integrated into the data breach response process. In turn, informed through service failure literature, we argue that a value co-creation perspective of data breach response strategies holds merit. We identify six distinct research avenues for future data breach research through a hermeneutic literature review of salient co-recovery literature. Our research represents a novelty to the field of data breach response strategies. We synthesize the service failure, data breach, and co-creation streams of literature and highlight research shortcomings and opportunities. Collapse

Abstract: As data breaches continue to rise, customers exhibit heterogeneous expectations regarding the company's response. Universal responses can show backfire effects since they fail to meet the expectations. Thus, the challenge arises that customer expectations must be known to mitigate the consequences while time is limited to publish the data breach announcement. By drawing on service failure, data breach, and justice research, we theorize that customer involvement provides a viable approach to this challenge. We argue that active customer involvement allows customers to formulate their expectations. Thus, enabling companies to leverage these expectations to provide tailored data breach responses. We test our hypotheses in a digital experiment (n=304). Our results provide a first indication that active customer involvement in a data breach drives positive group value and negative self-interest effects. We contribute to the data breach literature by revealing that customer involvement constitutes a suitable mechanism for identifying customer expectations. Collapse

Abstract: Data breaches are a major threat to organizations from both financial and customer relations perspectives. We developed a nomological network linking post-breach compensation strategies to key outcomes, namely continued shopping intentions, positive word-of-mouth, and online complaining, with the effects being mediated by customers’ justice perceptions. We conducted a longitudinal field study investigating Target’s data breach in 2013 that affected more than 110 million customers. We examined customers’ expectations toward compensation immediately after the breach was confirmed (survey 1) and their experiences after reparations were made (survey 2). Evidence from polynomial regression and response surface analyses of data collected from 388 affected customers showed that customers’ justice perceptions were influenced by the actual compensation provided as well as the type and extent of compensation an organization could and should have provided (i.e., customers’ compensation expectations). Interestingly, both positive and negative expectation disconfirmation led to less favorable justice perceptions compared to when expectations were met. Justice perceptions were, in turn, associated with key outcomes. We discuss implications for research on data security, information systems, and justice theory. Collapse

Abstract: As firms are moving towards data-driven decision making, they are facing an emerging problem, namely, algorithmic bias. Accordingly, algorithmic systems can yield socially-biased outcomes, thereby compounding inequalities in the workplace and in society. This paper reviews, summarises, and synthesises the current literature related to algorithmic bias and makes recommendations for future information systems research. Our literature analysis shows that most studies have conceptually discussed the ethical, legal, and design implications of algorithmic bias, whereas only a limited number have empirically examined them. Moreover, the mechanisms through which technology-driven biases translate into decisions and behaviours have been largely overlooked. Based on the reviewed papers and drawing on theories such as the stimulus-organism-response theory and organisational justice theory, we identify and explicate eight important theoretical concepts and develop a research model depicting the relations between those concepts. The model proposes that algorithmic bias can affect fairness perceptions and technology-related behaviours such as machine-generated recommendation acceptance, algorithm appreciation, and system adoption. The model also proposes that contextual dimensions (i.e., individual, task, technology, organisational, and environmental) can influence the perceptual and behavioural manifestations of algorithmic bias. These propositions highlight the significant gap in the literature and provide a roadmap for future studies. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the generally positive consequences associated with justice, recent research suggests that supervisors cannot always enact justice, and responses to justice may not be universally positive. Thus, justice is likely to vary in both how much it is received and the employee reactions it engenders. In order to understand the range of justice responses, we develop a dynamic theory of justice by using person-environment fit to take both the value that an individual places in justice and the justice they received into account. Using this framework, we clarify the consequences of congruence versus incongruence in daily justice received and valued, which have implications for treatment discrepancies and subsequent work behavior. We also identify the differences between excess and deficient justice on cognitive and affective responses to justice. Our findings reveal that employees’ experience of justice is more complicated than simply whether the justice they received was high or low on a particular day. Using experience sampling and polynomial regression methods, we observe that not all instances in which employees receive high levels of justice are equivalent. In fact, we find that, depending on justice valued, receiving high levels of justice can be just as detrimental as receiving low levels. Additionally, we find that although both forms of justice misfit (excess and deficiency) cause-negative work outcomes, they affect these outcomes through differential responses to justice — with excess causing increased rumination and deficiency causing decreased positive affect. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings for extant justice theory and for supervisor-employee work interactions. Collapse
