Abstract: Today’s companies rely heavily on in-company information technology standards (ICITS) to reduce costs, ensure flexibility, and facilitate the planning, implementation, and operation of IT systems. Steering and managing ICITS has proven to be challenging, revealing the need for efficient governance mechanisms. But even though prior research demonstrates the challenges of ICITS, viable advice on how to implement ICITS is scarce. In this paper, we develop an organizational design theory for the management of ICITS based on the framework of organizational control theory. We conducted a critical case study to identify basic goals, constitutive elements, and fundamental mechanisms of a working ICITS management. The resulting design goals and principles were then evaluated and further refined in the light of additional expert interviews. With our work, we wish to extend the body of theoretical knowledge on the management of ICITS and help practitioners master the various challenges occurring in this domain. Collapse

Abstract: The rise in distraction-related traffic accidents necessitates in-car infotainment systems that prioritize safety, as current systems often prioritize entertainment and convenience, contributing to the high number of distracted driving fatalities. Therefore, this paper applied a design science research approach to develop a design theory for Augmented Automotive Spaces that holistically consider safety, interface, interaction, and attention requirements. The main artifact is a design theory intended to help researchers and practitioners understand the design requirements and principles of intuitive, immersive, and attentiongrabbing infotainment user interfaces that enhance safety and overall mobility experience. The design theory was further implemented in a prototypical reference scenario and positively evaluated for developmental usefulness, conciseness, explanatory power, and extendibility. Overall, the authors' work contributes to the research areas of user interface design, infotainment, automotive information systems, and safety measures as well as providing a comprehensive guideline for the development of immersive and safe automotive infotainment systems. Abstract: This work addresses the problem of “user disambiguation”—estimating the likelihood of each member of a small group using a shared account or device. The main focus is on television set-top box (STB) viewership data in multiperson households, in which it is impossible to tell with certainty which household members watch what. The first main contribution is formulating user disambiguation as a predictive problem. The second contribution is a solution for estimating the likelihood that each individual in a multiperson household watches each TV segment. Kernel theories from the marketing, economics, and sociology literature inform the design of our method. This method learns priors for viewership in single-person households and then adapts them to the specifics of each multiperson household’s viewership history. Finally, we formalize two ad hoc heuristics that are currently used in industry (and research) for estimating audience composition of STB data and conduct a comparative analysis using simulated data, real large-scale viewership data, and a fully labeled panel-based data source. We find that our method has superior performance and practical value. The proposed solution has implications for advertisers, researchers who seek better understanding of TV viewership, and anyone using data generated by shared devices or accounts. A major TV provider has deployed this new method for use in its TV ad-targeting system. No personally identifiable information was gathered or used in conducting this study. Abstract: Machine Learning (ML) systems have an enormous potential to improve medical care, but skepticism about their use persists. Their inscrutability is a major concern which can lead to negative attitudes reducing end users trust and resulting in rejection. Consequently, many ML systems in healthcare suffer from a lack of user-centricity. To overcome these challenges, we designed a user-centered, trustworthy ML system by applying design science research. The design includes meta-requirements and design principles instantiated by mockups. The design is grounded on our kernel theory, the Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence principles. In three design cycles, we refined the design through focus group discussions (N1=8), evaluation of existing applications, and an online survey (N2=40). Finally, an effectiveness test was conducted with end users (N3=80) to assess the perceived trustworthiness of our design. The results demonstrated that the end users did indeed perceive our design as more trustworthy. Collapse

Abstract: Inventory management systems support firms in planning for an uncertain future by using demand forecasts and optimization models to make restocking decisions. Recent work on the "data-driven" newsvendor found that incorporating machine learning (ML) can improve the success of inventory management by accounting for demand-driving information. However, ML methods are infamously hard to interpret, which may hinder their acceptance. To ameliorate this, we show how to apply an interpretable attention-based architecture, the Temporal Fusion Transformer (TFT), to the data-driven newsvendor problem. Our approach replicates and extends the original TFT time series forecasting method to the inventory management domain. We evaluate our method on two real-world retail datasets, each covering 260 perishable food items, and provide domain-specific benchmarks. The computational study illustrates TFT's interpretable predictions and their comparatively high accuracy. Our work aims to lay the groundwork for further design science research on transparency in human-AI collaboration in this domain. Collapse

Abstract: Digital transformation helps organisations become more efficient while increasing their outreach and targeting new markets. However, it also makes the organisational design more malleable and can blur or even disrupt a firm’s boundaries. For sustainable entrepreneurs who develop business models for sustainability (BMfS), this is a Faustian bargain, as they trade independence for more potential. In this in-depth case based on action and design science research, we accompanied and evaluated the design of a BMfS with digital technologies. To evaluate for rising tensions, we looked at the relevant dynamics within the entrepreneurial firm and the digital business ecosystem. Besides a proposed solution model and its evaluation, we present design principles of contingency, re-configuration, and alliancing. This nascent design knowledge explains dynamics that occur when developing business models with digital technologies. Collapse

Abstract: With the proliferation of Business Intelligence and Analytics, data storytelling has gained increasing importance to improve communicating analytical insights to business users and support decision-making. While conceptual research on data storytelling suggests that these techniques can help improve decisionmaking, there is a lack of prescriptive knowledge on how to design data stories in Business Intelligence and Analytics. Moreover, it is not understood how data stories can facilitate effective use and support decision-making of business users. To address this challenge, we conduct a Design Science Research (DSR) project. Drawing on the theory of effective use and data storytelling techniques, we propose three design principles that we instantiate in a prototype. The results of two focus groups indicate that enhancing dashboards with data storytelling techniques increases transparent interaction and representational fidelity. Our DSR project contributes novel design knowledge for data stories that facilitate effective use. Collapse

Abstract: Gamification provides a prominent technique that can be used to provide Immersive Learning Environments (ILEs) for domains, where it is dangerous or expensive to learn in real environments. Especially industrial organizations (e.g., manufacturing, mining, construction) are a promising domain for implementing ILEs that combine gamification concepts with a pedagogical design to facilitate safety training under secure circumstances. Although there are design research studies that exemplify the utility of gamification of learning activities, or how to improve organizational safety training through gamification, there is a need to address how sustainable safe spaces can be designed for enhanced safety training in ILEs. Safe spaces are key elements of a successful safety training experience in ILEs as they provide safe and secure training environments, which in the physical world are typically considered too dangerous with high risk of injuring the training participants. This study reports findings from an ongoing DSR project that stresses the design of ILEs for sustainable safety training. Within the project, an artifact for immersive fire safety training in virtual reality has been designed, developed, and evaluated together with employees of a train operator company. The research responds to the need of producing design knowledge that moves beyond the highly contextualized designs principles that are particular for IVR applications. We use gamification concepts as a kernel theory for developing a mid-range theory of designing immersive virtual safety training environments. Collapse

Abstract: While Augmented Reality (AR) glasses are now instrumental in industries for delivering work-related information, the current one-size-fits-all information provision of AR glasses fails to cater to diverse workers' needs and environmental conditions. We propose a framework for harnessing Internet of thing (IoT) and wearable technology to improve the adaptability and customization of information provision by AR. As a preliminary exploration, this short paper develops a multi-modal data processing system for work performance classification in the aviation industry. Using machine learning algorithms for multi-modal feature extraction and classifier construction, this framework provides a more objective and consistent evaluation of work performance compared to singlemodal approaches. The proposed analytics architecture can provide valuable insights for other industries struggling to implement IoT and mixed reality. Collapse
