Abstract: Many software companies are adapting their traditional development processes to incorporate agile practices. In this context, it is necessary to count on expert knowledge to evaluate different agile practices and configure them according to project needs. However, this expert knowledge is scarce, difficult to validate, and time-consuming, since it is applied manually. As a solution, the paper presents a model-driven approach, called SIAM, which automatically generates guidelines for the adoption of agile practices through the combination of different development methods. SIAM is supported by a meta-model architecture to implement a knowledge repository that characterizes method configuration decisions, which can be reused in different development projects. SIAM has been implemented in a tool suite that facilitates the specification of models and the identification of issues during the definition of the development processes. The approach has been successfully applied to reconfigure an industrial development process with agile methods, showing that the effort required for tailoring agile practices according to organizational standards is considerably reduced. Abstract: Knowledge commons play a pivotal role in knowledge creation and sharing in the digital economy. The motivation for this research was the opportunity to develop a knowledge commons for IT service management (ITSM) practitioners. To obtain guidance to design the knowledge commons, we critically reviewed commons design principles (DPs) that were based on a well-established economics theory. We observed that the commons DPs had significant gaps when applied to IS practice. Hence, we developed an alternate set of DPs that we refer to as platform-enabled knowledge commons (PEKC) DPs that are relevant to IS practice. This paper discusses the development of PEKC DPs and applies them in instantiating an IS artifact, Service-Symphony. Service-Symphony is a purpose-built, public-facing knowledge repository developed for the benefit of ITSM practitioners and students. Our research followed the design science research (DSR) paradigm and contributes to the body of knowledge by establishing a multigrounded design theory comprising meta-requirements and DPs. To bridge theory and practice, we assessed the reusability of PEKC DPs through focus group interviews with IS architects. Our case study illustrates the complete life cycle of DPs covering conceptualization, initial formulation, iterative refinement, application to an important real-world instantiation, and evaluation by a group of independent IS practitioners. Abstract: Work is increasingly being organised via online platforms outside guiding organisational structures. Instead of having colleagues at work, crowd workers connect in online communities. We investigate how crowd workers build professional holding environments in online communities to compensate for the lack of organisational structures and we consider how they craft their crowd work activities to enhance their work experience and reduce its long-term precarity. Following a qualitative research design, this paper uses 675 forum interactions collected across six online communities. Based on our findings, we propose the concept of professional holding environments and provide a model for building such holding environments and job crafting in online communities. We thereby expand previous research on holding environments comprised of family members and friends by revealing the impact of professional online communities and their role in professionalisation and crafting supportive social structures in online crowd work. Abstract: Organizational learning is a fundamental process that defines organizational behavior and thereby strongly influences organizational performance. As organizations increasingly adopt machine learning (ML) systems in their routines, the need to illuminate the impact of learning machines on organizational learning processes becomes increasingly urgent. In particular, due to their highly interdisciplinary and collaborative nature, ML developments-as organizations' activities aimed at creating productively usable ML systems-may hereby represent an important but not yet well understood mechanism for fostering organizational learning. To explore how ML developments affect organizational learning processes, we interviewed 42 experts who are frequently involved in ML developments. Our findings suggest that ML developments can enhance organizational learning by stimulating a variety of organizational learning processes that generate a wealth of explicit and tacit knowledge in organizations. Abstract: Despite the dynamic nature of knowledge-related activities and the availability of a variety of communication technologies, many global teams habitually use technology in the same way across activities. However, as teams move through cycles of accumulating, integrating, and implementing knowledge, the purposes for communication technologies change. Current theorizing and empirical work on team knowledge management has yet to develop a dynamic theory that incorporates these changes. By conducting a multiwave, mixed method analysis of 48 global teams, we develop a theory of how global teams sustain effectiveness through technology affordance processes. We found that effective teams are those that recognize cues indicating change is necessary and coevolve a symbiosis between new activities, new purposes for interaction, and new uses of communication technologies. This coevolution of purpose with technology use forms new affordances, which enable the team to move on to new knowledge management activities and sustain effectiveness. Our theory more realistically models the dynamics of staying connected while sharing, combining, and implementing knowledge across the globe. Collapse

Abstract: The development of business models is a challenging task that can be supported with software tools. Here, existing approaches and tools do not focus on the company’s situation in which the development takes place (e.g., financial resources, product type). To tackle this challenge, we used design science research to develop a situation-specific business model development approach that contains three stages: First, existing knowledge in terms of tasks to do (e.g., analyze competitive advantage), and decisions to be made (e.g., social media marketing) are stored in repositories. Second, the knowledge is used to compose a development method based on the company’s situation. Third, the development method is enacted to develop a business model. This demonstration paper presents a tool-support called Situational Business Model Developer that supports all stages of our approach. We release the tool under open-source and evaluate it with a case study on developing business models for mobile apps. Collapse

Abstract: Using a longitudinal multisite case study research design, this study demonstrates how cloud computing helps to build knowledge ambidexterity (K-AMB) capabilities in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). A crosstheory approach is used to highlight the connections between ambidexterity and knowledge management the­ ories as a basis to explore the benefits of K-AMB capabilities for SMEs. The study investigates how the focus on knowledge exploitation by SMEs limits innovation which can be reconciled using cloud computing by creating multiple ambidextrous knowledge opportunities. In relation to cloud computing and knowledge ambidexterity, the study is the first to measure the effects of a temporal lag in the K-AMB processes resulting in enhanced employee-driven innovation. The results showed that over a 12-month period, employee-driven innovation was significantly amplified from the application of cloud computing that supported more sophisticated ambidextrous processes of knowledge management. The results significantly shift mindsets about the revelatory value of cloud computing to promote K-AMB in SMEs. We draw novel insights to the theory of ambidexterity by proposing that digital technologies and employee innovation contexts lie side-by-side and play an important role in building KAMB capabilities in SMEs. Abstract: Learning-by-connecting, the formation of connections between lessons, is a fairly common phenomenon, but how does it evolve? We argue that learning-by-connecting unfolds as the relevance of lessons to other lessons is gradually discovered over time. The process of “relevance discovery” unfolds through a dynamic interplay between lessons and their context that provides opportunities to discover the relevance of lessons to other lessons. We develop a theoretical model in which the availability of these opportunities and their sorting in time drive the formation of connections. We explore and test our model in the context of organizational rules that we conceptualize, following rule-based learning theories, as repositories of lessons learned. Our empirical context is the formation of citation ties between clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), a type of organizational rules in healthcare, in a Canadian regional healthcare organization. We find that citation tie formation intensifies when opportunities to discover relevance become available. We also find that learning-by-connecting creates rule networks in which the formation of new ties slows down due to the sorting of opportunities in time. Our findings support our assumption that learning-by-connecting is shaped by relevance discovery. Our study extends models of rule-based learning and contributes to discussions on the formation of connections in contexts of dispersed learning and knowledge. Collapse

Abstract: Do people care equally about reputational gains and losses? We study this question by analyzing users’ contri­ bution to online knowledge repositories, with data from StackOverflow.com, a website for user-curated technical questions and answers. Based on an analysis of about 1.2 million data points (22% of all relevant activity during a six-month period on this website) focusing on consistent, regular contributors, we find that users post fewer answers after receiving upvotes as well as downvotes. This is surprising and not consistent with rational behavior, because it is in the best interest of a user to post more answers after a downvote. Interestingly, users who receive downvotes post significantly fewer answers compared to users who receive upvotes. This suggests that reputational losses (downvotes) elicit a stronger reaction in users than reputational gains (upvotes), sug­ gesting the presence of reputational loss aversion, after controlling for alternative explanations. Overall, users’ reaction is about twice as strong for reputational losses as for gains. Loss aversion as indicated by relative re­ action to downvotes compared to upvotes is convex in reputation – it is stronger among users in the higher reputation segments compared to the lower and middle ranges. Our paper is novel in extending the study of loss aversion to reputational settings, and studying ex post loss aversion, as compared to ex ante loss aversion in prior literature. Collapse
