Abstract: There is a wide gender gap in developing countries due to a range of cultural, economic and political barriers. This is even more accentuated in post conflict economies in times of crisis. Smartphones and mobile applications can help to narrow this gap. The economic and non-economic challenges facing women entrepreneurs and the role of smartphone innovation in overcoming these challenges and developing strong marketing strategies were investigated. We drew on the 5 M model to investigate how mobile applications can support women entrepreneurs. We conducted thirty interviews with women entrepreneurs in Iraq. The findings show that mobile applications provided these entrepreneurs with innovative ways to overcome many of the challenges they face in relation to running a business. The research provides theoretical contributions by developing an integrated, multilevel analytical model on women in entrepreneurship based on extending the 5 M model with new technology-related elements. Practical, policy and managerial implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: As of late, the use of “digital” as a qualifier to established research concepts is increasing. However, we have yet to clearly establish what makes a “digital x” concept distinct from an “IT x” concept when “x” stands for well-established concepts such as strategy, infrastructure, innovation, or transformation, among others. In this paper, we review the need for, and merit of, labeling focal concepts in our field as “digital x” in contrast to using the dominant, incumbent label of “IT x.” We position the shift as a call to attend to new salient features that characterize contemporary settings of information technology use and its effects. Recognizing this need, we develop guidelines for future research by arguing what novel phenomena the label of “digital x” foregrounds and how insights gained through such foregrounding contribute to scholarship in ways that the term “IT x” does not. By doing so, this paper promotes clarity for the use of the digital x concepts and introduces explicit guidelines to delineate between the nascent stream of digital x research and established modes of IT x research. Abstract: This paper provides a typology of digital work – a popular term still lacking a clear meaning. We show how previous attempts to capture the essence of digital work struggle to provide a meaningful yet comprehensive understanding of what differentiates traditional from digital work. We draw on prior literature to argue that digital work requires three rationales to be fulfilled: process (How?), outcome (What?), and objective (Why?). Based on this, we highlight three variations – digital enabled work, digital engaged work, and digital embedded work. This typology allows us to define digital work more clearly and enables future research to adequately study and theorize digital work. Furthermore, this typology permits considering alternate classifications for activities and actors in work that traditional work conceptualizations fail to include. Collapse

Abstract: This special issue addresses a largely neglected area of Information Systems (IS) research – the regulation of and through Information Technology (IT). As with other human technologies, IT artefacts present risks and can harm individuals, groups, organisations, economies, and society: However, this remains a largely unexplored topic in IS research. Nevertheless, regulators, social commentators, the media, and the public have voiced their concerns about such risks, particularly those related to artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, privacy, digital assets (e.g. cryptocurrencies), and the market dominance of digital platforms. Accordingly, regulations have been instituted or proposed to regulate IT artefacts in and across several business sectors. Additionally, in response to the informational challenges posed by a complex web of laws and regulations, regulators and business organisations have implemented IT artefacts to transform regulatory and supervisory processes or to enhance organisational risk management and compliance reporting capabilities. This special issue addresses the research challenges related to emergent issues surrounding the regulation of and through IT. In this editorial, we take stock of where the field currently stands. We advance a conceptual ontology of IT regulation to guide future research by specifying several taken-for-granted core concepts. By rendering the concepts, categories, and their relationships explicit, the model and its related research questions provide a firm foundation to generate a cumulative body of research on the regulation of and through IT. Abstract: The decision on which hotel to book is a high-cost process for individuals and even more for groups due to the information explosion on online travel agent platforms. To assist group selecting the optimal hotel that meets the majority affective expectations, this study proposes a group hotel selection frame for booking with Kansei text mining and consensus coordinating. Firstly, to quantify the tourists’ affective needs for hotels, a Kansei-related dictionary towards hotel domain is constructed by Kansei text mining. Secondly, the bilattice-based Kansei score of hotels is defined and measured to represent hotel affective information scientifically. Then, a group consensus model with minimum adjustment cost is introduced to coordinate consistency of individual preferences in a tourist group. Moreover, a group hotel ranking based on group affective preference is interactively generated to meet the group personalized demands. Finally, a case study on Trip.com is conducted to demonstrate the proposed method. Collapse

Abstract: Human and material agency have been investigated in the IS literature to understand how technology and humans influence each other. Some framings of agency treat humans and technology symmetrically, some privilege the agency of humans over technology, and others do not attribute agency to either humans or non-humans. We argue that with the new generation of technologies, such as AI, the notion of agency needs to differentiate between the actions of AI from that of traditional information systems and humans. We introduce the dimensions of agency to differentiate agencies while not privileging any actor. We illustrate the application of dimensions by using it as a lens to study the case of a technician using an AI solution for screening patients for early-stage breast cancer. Through the use of the dimensions of agency we illustrate how the influence of AI over human practice, such as screening for early-stage breast cancer, is higher than the influence of traditional technology. We discuss our contribution to the theory of agency and conclude with a discussion on potential practical applications of the framework. Collapse

Abstract: Content analysis traditionally involves human coders manually combing through text documents to search for relevant concepts and categories. However, this approach is time-intensive and not scalable, particularly for secondary data like social media content, news articles, or corporate reports. To address this problem, the paper presents an automated framework called Automated Deductive Content Analysis of Text (ADCAT) that uses deep learning-based semantic techniques, an ontology of validated construct measures, a large language model, human-in-the-loop disambiguation, and a novel augmentation-based weighted contrastive learning approach for improved language representations, to build a scalable approach for deductive content analysis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach to identify firm innovation strategies from their 10-K reports to obtain inferences reasonably close to human coding. Collapse

Abstract: The goals of design science research (DSR) projects are to generate novel and useful artifacts and to produce rigorous and generalizable design knowledge. Often, DSR projects are conducted in collaborative, interdisciplinary project teams. Different disciplinary approaches to codifying design knowledge result in challenging project interactions. To study this situation, we analyze design knowledge codification in interdisciplinary teams over time. We gain insights from a survey of recent DSR papers that have been published in the AIS Senior Scholars’ Basket. We then present a detailed case study of a longitudinal project that brought to light issues of sharing design knowledge across disciplinary borders. Drawing from the survey and case study, we provide actionable guidance on how to effectively codify and share design knowledge to support researchers and practitioners to build useful artifacts and to make interdisciplinary design knowledge contributions reusable and applicable. Abstract: With the rise of socio-political movements seeking to improve women's circumstances in society, research on gender has been continuously growing in Information Systems (IS) research. Despite this growth, critical-ethical perspectives on gender power dynamics are lacking. Therefore, we critically investigate the perceptions of male and female IS developers on gender inequalities using feminist ethics of power. We find that interviewees coincide in the belief that inequalities are improving and that gender is not a limiting factor of competencies. However, men and women deviate regarding perceptions of respect and validation, equality, and the drivers that (re-)produce disparities. Additionally, women exhibit fragmented conceptualizations of inclusion. Through a critical analysis of these findings, we expose ethical dilemmas that arise from these contradictory perceptions of gender inequalities and propose pathways for transforming the prevailing order. Our study contributes by advancing a broader perspective on inequalities through the lens of feminist ethics of power. Collapse

Abstract: Digital" is a popular adjective for concepts related to electronic, computerized or networked processes in current research and practice. From an ontological-theoretical perspective, the prevalence of digital things triggers the question, how Digitality itself could be conceptualized. This article studies the ontology of Digitality and consequently discusses Digital Innovation (DI) from a new perspective. First, literature on Digitality is analyzed. Based on the findings, an ontological conceptual framework of Digitality (OCFD) is proposed. It describes four layers of Digitality: physical foundations, virtuality, digital culture and world, and digital metaphysics. From a human perspective, requirements to grasp and embody Digitality are highlighted, as well as the expansion of reality. Finally, Digitality is discussed as a paradigm of DI and exemplary digital phenomena are projected onto the OCFD. This paper contributes to DI research and practice through theory-building towards a better understanding of ontological characteristics and practical implications of Digitality in DI. Collapse
