Abstract: Design science research addresses important, complex real-world problems. Although well-accepted as part of research in information systems, initiating or progressing a design science research project still requires effort to describe how knowledge creation emerges and its underlying dynamics. Given the existing body of knowledge on design science research, it should be possible to learn from that knowledge to progress future work. This paper analyzes design science research projects to identify and make explicit their knowledge contributions while recognizing the plurality of a project's knowledge contributions with respect to a project's knowledge scope and knowledge goals. The construct of a path of knowledge types is introduced that represents how knowledge con­ tributions are dynamically created throughout a project. These paths form the basis for the derivation of seven design science research strategies, which lead to guidelines for initiating or progressing a project. This effort is compared to other research that analyzes the growing body of work in design science with respect to knowledge contributions and project classifications. Collapse

Abstract: Organisations are increasingly creating inter-organisational ecosystem partnerships to innovate openly. Despite effective knowledge management significantly supporting ecosystem infrastructures, empirical insights into the importance of and interdependencies between conditions for successful knowledge exchange across ecosystem contexts remain unexplored within existing literature. This study implements a mixed-method approach to ascertain which conditions are responsible for knowledge transfer success across innovation ecosystems. Interpretive Structural Modelling was employed to analyse questionnaires with key ecosystem stakeholders, in order to impose a hierarchical structure upon the conditions. The configurational nature of these conditions, and their combinations into solutions for success was ascertained through analysing semi-structured interviews using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. Results reveal multiple, mutually exclusive pathways to knowledge transfer success, grouped into three solution types, increasing understanding of the interrelated nature of the knowledge transfer conditions. Abstract: An extensive literature studies the benefits for a firm to be the first to invest in innovative technologies such as information technologies (ITs). However, IT investment often faces the risk of implementation failure. How would such risk affect an early adopter’s incentive to invest? Do late adopters benefit from information about the early adopter’s investment? In this paper, we investigate these questions in a context in which two firms, a leader and a follower, invest in a cost-reducing IT sequentially. This paper differs from prior literature in two aspects: First, IT adoption is nonexclusive and available to all client firms. Second, IT implementation can fail. In this case, the follower may have information about the leader’s IT investment level or implementation outcome before making an investment decision. We use a Hotelling model of duopoly competition to examine how IT implementation failure risks and the follower’s knowledge about the leader’s IT investment may affect the firms’ incentive to sequentially invest in IT. Our results show that the risk of IT implementation failure impacts the firms’ investment incentives and profits through three distinct effects: the first mover advantage mitigation; competition mitigation; and uncertainty-driven, cost-based differentiation effects, and these three effects may drive the firms’ investment and profits in opposite directions. The follower’s knowledge about the leader’s IT investment level before making an IT investment decision gives the leader a first mover advantage and the follower a disadvantage. In contrast, the follower’s knowledge about the leader’s IT implementation outcome can benefit both the leader and the follower. Finally, we find that a spaced-out sequential IT investment schedule, in which the follower makes the investment decision after the leader’s IT investment level and implementation outcome are both known, leads to the highest industry-wide IT investment and social surplus. Abstract: Organizations are increasingly concerned with the continuous reassessment and redesign of their products, processes, and business models to remain competitive in uncertain environments. Thereby, mental models, routines, and behaviors of individuals and entire organizations need to be updated to fit changing demands and environmental factors. 'Unlearning' is a promising approach to achieve this because it allows knowledge to be refined and adapted to novel situations. Unlearning established ways of thinking and doing effectively poses, however, several challenges that could be mitigated by an appropriate tool support. By following a qualitative systematic review of literature from Information Systems and adjacent disciplines, we identified and synthesized existing tools and guidance to assist individuals, teams, and organizations in unlearning. With our study, we contribute to an integrated overview of practical support for unlearning based on a sample of 41 papers as well as useful guidance for practitioners, designers, and researchers. Abstract: Before the COVID-19 pandemic, studying at German universities was traditionally dominated by inclass activities. During the pandemic, technical and organizational foundations were laid not only for teaching but also for exams. With the resumption of in-class events, the question is to what extent online exams will also be used in the future. Here, examiners and educational institutions can learn from the experience during the pandemic to increase the students' intention to participate in online exams in the future. To identify the problems encountered and derive lessons from them, a mixed-method approach was followed. For this purpose, 478 examinees were surveyed over 3 semesters using a quantitative questionnaire, followed by in-depth semi-structured follow-up interviews with 11 students. As a result, 5 recommendations for action could be derived, covering the topics of exam routine and familiarity, problem-solving, cheating, and teaching-examination arrangements. Collapse

Abstract: As an emerging technological means to influence user, digital nudging is being used by more and more custom manufacturers. This research explores the influence of digital nudging design in online customization system on user satisfaction. I propose that for novices, the adoption of digital nudging can reduce the design effort and increase their satisfaction; for experts, the adoption of digital nudging will reduce users' feeling of accomplishment and reduce satisfaction. In addition, the influence of overt digital nudging (ODN) is stronger than that of covert digital nudging (CDN). We designed 3 experiments to investigate them. This research can extend the understanding of the study on user customization satisfaction and the effect of digital nudging and provide guidance for manufacturers to optimize the design of customization systems. Abstract: There are many uncertainties and ambiguities in the design of future-oriented artifacts. Societal and environmental developments are unclear; technologies not ready; target users not accessible. Nevertheless, designing future-oriented artifacts provides opportunities to either create radical innovations that present a competitive advantage, or to engage with relevant stakeholders in a speculative way. This paper provides a framework for developing, discussing, and evaluating future-oriented artifacts, which was developed based on literature and conceptual theorizing. It consists of a process model and a morphological box, outlining eight categories of relevance along with several options to choose from. Subsequently, we applied the framework to an existing future design project to illustrate its applicability. The framework spans the space of possible design and evaluation approaches and, hence, provides a guiding schema for researchers and practitioners to discuss the potentials and implications of design concepts for future-oriented artifacts. Abstract: Data labels are an integral input to develop machine learning (ML) models. In complex domains, labels represent the externalized product of complex knowledge. While prior research discussed labels typically as input of ML models, we explore their role in organizational learning (OL). Based on a case study of a German car manufacturer, we contextualize a framework of OL to the use of labels in organizations informing about organizational members who work with labels, requirements of labelbased tools, label-related tasks, and impediments of label-related task performance. From our findings, we derive propositions about the role of labels in OL and outline future research opportunities. Our results inform theory about the role of labels in OL and can guide practitioners leveraging labels to create and transfer knowledge within organizations. Collapse

Abstract: Understanding how to enhance online leadership in online Q&A communities is important because an online leader plays a role model or knowledge coordinator who can strengthen member commitment in the community. Considering the essential role of communication in establishing leadership, this study aims to understand how the linguistic complexity of two types of knowledge contribution, i.e., knowledge adding (KA) versus knowledge shaping (KS) that are targeted at two types of audience, may influence leadership in online Q&A communities. By analyzing the posting history of members from StackExchange, a massive network of online Q&A communities, our findings suggest that among the three linguistic complexity dimensions, readability and lexical diversity of KA have more positive impacts on online leadership than those of KS. However, the sentiment of KS has a more positive impact than the sentiment of KA. This study contributes to the online leadership research by highlighting the importance of adjusting linguistic styles based on types of communication behaviors (i.e., KA and KS) to earn leadership.
