Abstract: Knowledge management (KM) has emerged as an operational and strategic organisational tool. However, the influence of recent cyber regulations (CR) and security policies (SP) on the usefulness of KM, are absent from the literature. This study focuses on the intersection of knowledge management and knowledge fortification. The study employs survey data from a sample of firms and utilises partial least squares (PLS) with extensive post hoc analyses, to examine the influence of CR and SP on KM core processes (acquisition, sharing, and utilisation) and subsequently on the operational effectiveness and strategic performance of firms. Contrary to prior research, we found that external knowledge sharing negatively affected performance. These findings support our assertion that KM processes are tied to contingencies that change the relationship between KM outcomes. Collapse

Abstract: Servitization describes the transformation of a manufacturer to a customer-centric service and solution provider. Providing customer solutions requires the integration of knowledge from different domains, e.g., engineering, software, and service, and usually also entails that more knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) become part of the manufacturer's overall business model. Against this background, this article investigates how manufacturing and software firms leverage knowledge in KIBS and corresponding business models. We developed a taxonomy that systematizes KIBS along the three metadimensions of value proposition, value creation, and value capture. The application of our taxonomy to exemplary cases from both industries shows different strategies of knowledge usage across these industries. Our findings can support the development of KIBS and help practitioners to understand different ways of utilizing knowledge as a strategic resource. Implications for research point to the need for better understanding the collaboration of multiple actors from a knowledge-based perspective. Collapse

Abstract: In a global digital market, startups must have the capability to handle apprehension of knowledge and utilization of knowledge ef ciently to quickly adapt to new realities as these emerge, given their limited resources—this regardless of whether it is customer needs or other events that affect the market. However, we do not know how startups quickly change course and adapt to stay competitive in the market. Therefore, we conducted a qualitative study based on 23 interviews with nine globally active automotive startups to understand startups' fast adaptability and how it impacts their digital innovation capability. The results show that startups with an organizational agility capability ef ciently handle the transition between all four stages of innovative thinking. We conclude that dealing simultaneously with a problem from several different perspectives accelerates the apprehension of knowledge through concrete experience and abstract thinking; experimenting with new solutions develops new insights and knowledge. Abstract: The paper presents an initial version of a framework that illustrates the high-level similarities across several common forms of design or action-oriented IS research, such as design science research (DSR) focused on developing meta-artefacts or artefact instances, action design research (ADR), or canonical action research (CAR). The paper further illustrates how these forms of design or action-oriented IS research emphasise different forms of knowledge utilisation and contribution potentials, the design of different solution entities, and pursue different paths towards achieving real-world impact. Researchers can utilise the framework to guide their choice of a research approach at the start of the project or become aware of yet untapped knowledge contribution potentials in their chosen one. Further research can expand the scope of the frameworks beyond DSR, ADR and CAR, or draw on the framework to investigate the potential of leveraging good research practices or research outcomes developed for/by one form of research for the other forms. Abstract: The question of how knowledge assets are utilized in the context of online communities is the primary impetus of this research. Using a multilevel approach, this paper investigates factors that influence the use of knowledge in an online question and answer platform (OQA). It focuses on three levels including informational, individual, and community, and reviews interactions across each level. The study tests the multilevel model with data from StackOverflow.com, a renowned online community for programmers to exchange knowledge assets, especially questions and answers about coding issues. Traditional hierarchical regression analysis proved insufficient to explicate the complexity associated with human decision-making processes with respect to asset utilization. However, a machine learning technique with a Chi-square automatic interaction detection algorithm provided a richer understanding of the relative importance of factors and their thresholds for influencing knowledge asset use. Abstract: We distinguish several design knowledge types in IS research and examine different modes of utilizing and contributing design knowledge that can take place during design science research (DSR) projects. DSR projects produce project design knowledge, which is project-specific, possibly untested, conjectural, and temporary; thus, distinct from the more stable contributions to the propositional and prescriptive human knowledge bases. We also identify solution design knowledge as distinct from solution design entities in the prescriptive knowledge base. Each of the six modes of utilizing or contributing knowledge (i.e. design theorizing modes) we examine draws on different knowledge types in a different way to inform the production of project design knowledge (including artifact design) in a DSR project or to grow the human knowledge bases in return. Design science researchers can draw on our design theorizing modes and design knowledge perspectives to utilize the different extant knowledge types more consciously and explicitly to inform their build and evaluation activities, and to better identify and explicate their research’s contribution potential to the human knowledge bases. Abstract: Large volumes of product reviews generated by online users have important strategic value for product development. Prior studies often focus on the influence of reviews on customers' purchasing decisions through the wordof-mouth effect. However, little is known about how product developers respond to these reviews. This study adopts a big data analytical approach to investigate the impact of online customer reviews on customer agility and subsequently product performance. We develop a singular value decomposition- based semantic keyword similarity method to quantify customer agility using large-scale customer review texts and product release notes. Using a mobile app data set with over 3 million online reviews, our empirical study finds that review volume has a curvilinear relationship with customer agility. Furthermore, customer agility has a curvilinear relationship with product performance. Our study contributes to innovation literature by demonstrating the influence of firms' capability of utilizing online customer reviews and its impact on product performance. Abstract: Virtual interorganizational communities of practice (IOCoPs) enable professionals belonging to different organizations to exchange and share knowledge via computer-mediated interactions. Since knowledge sharing is socially embedded, contextual factors likely play an important role in encouraging individuals’ community participation. Specifically, professionals in IOCoPs are embedded in two different social environments: the virtual community where they interact with online peers and organizations where they utilize their knowledge. Therefore it is important to simultaneously study motivating factors generated from these two different contexts, including peer effects within and organizational influences outside the virtual community. In this research, we apply a novel econometric identification method to analyze a unique data set collected from a virtual IOCoP in the financial trading sector. We find that, after controlling for individual-level characteristics, contextual motivating factors from peers and organizations are influential both quantitatively and qualitatively in determining community participation. Differentiating multiple-level motivating factors across different contexts enables us to shed light on various mechanisms that IOCoPs can apply to engage collective learning and knowledge management across organizations.The online appendix is available at https://doi-org.tudelft.idm.oclc.org/10.1287/isre.2017.0752. Abstract: A rising topic in information systems (IS) research and practice is the role of business analytics (BA) in firms and its impact. While prior works have primarily focused on the technical and methodological aspects of analytics (e.g., applying analytics techniques to predict outcomes of interest), this study focuses on developing the notion of analytical capability enabled by various BA techniques and applications, and its impact on firm performance. We define analytical capability as the extent to which a firm is able to develop and leverage BA techniques and applications for decision support and firm success. Although prior studies assessed the role of BA in certain domains such as customer service and supply chain, a holistic view of analytical capability in firms is still largely unknown. In particular, there is a need to conceptualize and operationalize analytical capability as a multidimensional concept and examine how it can lead to operational and strategic outcomes. Abstract: Considerable research has established the superior performance of teams on which team members utilize specialized knowledge and also develop transactive processes that promote coordination. Less is known, however, about the consequences for team performance when team members only possess one of the two productivity factors. We develop and test a framework highlighting the distinct challenges these teams will face. In particular, our results show that each productivity factor contributed significantly more to team performance when the other factor was present. And our findings also illustrate a potential failure mode for knowledge utilization. If team members could not coordinate their collective efforts, utilizing knowledge undermined team performance. Our framework outlines a similar risk for too much coordination, if team members cannot utilize their specialized knowledge and are asked to perform a task with a “rugged” performance landscape. We discuss the implications of our framework and results for theory and practice. Collapse
