Abstract: The introduction of machine learning (ML), as the engine of many artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled systems in organizations, comes with the claim that ML models provide automated decisions or help domain experts improve their decision-making. Such a claim gives rise to the need to keep domain experts in the loop. Hence, data scientists, as those who develop ML models and infuse them with human intelligence during ML devel­ opment, interact with various ML stakeholders and reflect their views within ML models. This interaction comes with (often conflicting) demands from various ML stakeholders and potential tensions. Building on the theories of effective use and wise reasoning, this mixed method study proposes a model to better understand how data scientists can use wisdom for managing these tensions when they develop ML models. In Study 1, through interviewing 41 analytics and ML experts, we investigate the dimensions of wise reasoning in the context of ML development. In Study 2, we test the overall model using a sample of 249 data scientists. Our results confirm that to develop effective ML models, data scientists need to not only use ML systems effectively, but also practice wise reasoning in their interactions with domain experts. Abstract: Classroom teaching has been undergoing a digital transformation in the last decade and is now being amplified by Educational Key Opinion Leaders (Edu-KOLs). This research aims to investigate the relationship between learners' perceived outcomes, motivation, and the selection preferences of Edu-KOLs. This paper presents insights gained from a two-phase study. We conducted research in the first phase through an online questionnaire completed by 186 parents in China whose children are studying or have recently studied online. In the second phase, we interviewed parents to deep dive into their thinking process behind their choices of Edu-KOLs. By utilizing the PLS-SEM method, this research has proposed and verified six hypotheses asserting that e-learning platforms, student engagement scores, and perceived outcomes strongly correlate with the perception of Edu-KOLs. However, parents' educational level or occupation has less impact on the choices of Edu-KOLs. There are also positive relationships among Edu-KOLs, customer advocacy, and future purchase intention. Abstract: Wearable devices are receiving significant attention in the wearable technology domain. Despite considerable attention and an initial healthy uptake by users, retention (or continued use) remain elusive. A gap exists with respect to the understanding of design features influencing continued and sustained use. Accordingly, this study focuses on continuance intention with a particular emphasis on design features. The underlying model builds on the Expectation-Confirmation Model (ECM) to explore features such as trust, readability, dialogue support, personalization, device battery, appeal, and social support that may explain the continuance intention of wearables. Partial least squares (PLS) was used to estimate the model. The results support the hypotheses in ECM and show that design features such as dialogue support, device battery, and appeal are significant in explaining confirmation. Readability and personalization were not supported. The findings complement prior research studying continuous use intention with a focus on pertinent device characteristics. Collapse

Abstract: The information technology (IT) field faces a skills shortage. Only 17% of a projected 3.5 million computing job openings are expected to be filled by 2026 (National Association for Women & Information Technology, 2018). Yet the number of women pursuing IT careers continues to decreaseonly 19% of IT bachelor's degrees in 2016 were awarded to women compared to 57% of bachelor's degrees overall. We compared three theories that could explain this gender gap in the pursuit of IT careers: expectancy-value theory, role congruity theory, and field-specific ability beliefs theory. We find that women and men are similar in their levels of important factors related to career interest, but that two of these factors-technical learning self-efficacy and agentic goals-have increased salience for women. This suggests that some of the gender gap in the IT field could be addressed by placing more focus on developing technical learning self-efficacy in both men and women. While this could help both women and men, it would likely have an outsized effect on the IT career pursuit of women. Collapse

Abstract: To capitalize on valuable consumer and transactional data on mobile apps, companies should employ ethical decisions and strategies that can reduce privacy concerns, because such concerns present critical challenges for corporate social responsibility. In this study, we tested the effect of intervention strategies, Fair Information Practices, and the data collection method on privacy-related decisions. The results show that both intervention strategies have a significant effect on perceived data control and perceived risks and in turn on behavioral intention. Our findings have novel theoretical and managerial implications to those who want to promote ethical business practices in the mobile apps industry. Collapse

However, it is unclear how these theoretical constructs can be utilized to understand the antecedents of data completeness as a dimension of data quality. Following that stream of research, the current paper examines the factors influencing data completeness in electronic medical records (EMR). The scope of this study is by only surveying medical professionals at healthcare settings in northern Nevada. Abstract: Data completeness is an important dimension of data quality in electronic medical records (EMR). There are many constructs that influence data completeness in EMR. In this paper, we investigate three of these constructs: Clinical staff participation, EMR integration, and EMR alignment to care processes. We use these constructs from related studies as theoretical support to propose a conceptual model of factors influencing data completeness in EMR. The conceptual model is empirically validated using a survey with clinical staff participants. The results reveal that a high level of clinical staff’s participation influences the data completeness in EMR. Furthermore, the alignment of EMR to the care processes has an impact on the data completeness in EMR. Collapse

Abstract: The age of big data analytics is now here, with companies increasingly investing in big data initiatives to foster innovation and outperform competition. Nevertheless, while researchers and practitioners started to examine the shifts that these technologies entail and their overall business value, it is still unclear whether and under what conditions they drive innovation. To address this gap, this study draws on the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm and information governance theory to explore the interplay between a firm’s big data analytics capabilities (BDACs) and their information governance practices in shaping innovation capabilities. We argue that a firm’s BDAC helps enhance two distinct types of innovative capabilities, incremental and radical capabilities, and that information governance positively moderates this relationship. To examine our research model, we analyzed survey data collected from 175 IT and business managers. Results from partial least squares structural equation modelling analysis reveal that BDACs have a positive and significant effect on both incremental and radical innovative capabilities. Our analysis also highlights the important role of information governance, as it posi­ tively moderates the relationship between BDAC’s and a firm’s radical innovative capability, while there is a nonsignificant moderating effect for incremental innovation capabilities. Finally, we examine the effect of en­ vironmental uncertainty conditions in our model and find that information governance and BDACs have am­ plified effects under conditions of high environmental dynamism. Abstract: This research develops and tests a theoretical model on the impact of antecedents on technology adoption developing valuable insight into influencing levels of attitudes and expectations prior to deployment of a mandated to use system. Two stages during the pre-deployment phase of a mission-critical, mandated system are studied. Results are reported from a two cross-sections field study of 263 and 185 users (physicians, nurses and nurse affiliates) at Critical Care departments of two hospitals implementing a Patient Data Management System. The results indicate that prior to deployment, trust is the most important predictor of attitudes and expectations. The proposed model explains a relatively large amount of the variance, (64% and 69%) in attitude and (57% and 47%) in expectations before and after training in system use, respectively. Collapse

Abstract: Fitness technologies are a prominent example of the societal trend towards personal informatics. These technologies pair devices that have various embedded sensors with one or more apps to allow for the collection, analysis, socialization, and management of individuals' health and wellness data. We have limited insight into what drives the use of fitness technologies or how they may contribute to wellness outcomes. To address this gap, our study examines how exercise goals are related to fitness technology feature set use and how the use is associated with a measure of the exercisers' psychological well-being (ie, subjective vitality). We find that intrinsic exercise goals (eg, enjoyment or competence) are associated with the use of features that allow users to collect, analyse, and inform their exercise progress. Body-focused extrinsic exercise goals (eg, appearance) are also associated with the use of such features but are negatively associated with features that socialize exercise. The social extrinsic exercise goal is associated with the use of more controlling features that can provide external pressure from the technology or other people. The social features of fitness technologies are associated with higher levels of subjective vitality. Our findings indicate that exercisers who have goals where measuring progress may be desired (eg, losing weight and training for a marathon) are more likely to be drawn to the data management aspects of fitness technologies, whereas using fitness technologies to socialize exercise may add an element of enjoyment that is attractive to some users and may lead to increased well-being.
