Abstract: When we were first invited to write an essay on the use of PLS for CAIS, we wanted to focus on recent developments to help applied IS researchers, and the CAIS community of authors, reviewers, and editors make use of the latest research on and methodological advances in PLS. Recognizing that Information Systems is arguably the discipline in which the use of PLS as an alternative to CB-SEM originated and is most widely used, we realized that, pragmatically, our essay must focus on how to use PLS, not whether to use PLS.We received six interesting responses from researchers active in the PLS community. Their thoughts on our presentation of recent developments in PLS show very different perspectives with many points of difference amongst points of agreement in all the responses. In this rejoinder, we briefly respond to the received comments, clarify our position and ideas, and identify points of agreement (and disagreement). We emphasize that none of the responses give us cause to revise or eliminate our recommendations in recent developments.Overall, we believe this discussion on PLS to be valuable in advancing the use of PLS in Information Systems, which is, as we show in this rejoinder, an urgent issue. Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool for complex decision-making. However, little is known about how AI-based systems should be integrated into clinical practice to improve patient and provider outcomes. We argue that AI-based systems are no longer passive tools and can assume certain responsibilities for tasks. A novel aspect of our study is the exploration of the power relationship between AI and physicians, which can significantly impact medical care. Therefore, we aim to shed light on how configurations of power in AI interactions influence technostress and work outcomes. We outline a lab-in-the-field experiment on diagnosis and reporting by physicians using AI. Our study aims to uncover (1) the differential effects of power configurations in AI on physicians' positive and negative technostress levels, and (2) their psychological and behavioral outcomes. We aim to contribute to information systems research and practice by highlighting the power implications of AI. Collapse

Abstract: Avatar-mediated communication (AMC), commonly used in online environments such as games and the emerging metaverse, is different from traditional computer-mediated communication in that it is a human-object-object-human relationship mediated by the individual's avatar and the avatar of the person with whom they are communicating. We conceptualize AMC by using three key concepts: user-avatar identification (i.e., how a user perceives their avatar as themselves), avatar-avatar identification (i.e., how a user perceives their avatar as part of a community of avatars), and social presence (i.e., how a user perceives the other avatar as a representation of the other person). We tested this model using 778 individuals who responded to three waves of data collection. The results show that the three factors of AMC influence users' social identification with their community and strengthen its impact on loyalty. From a theoretical perspective, our research adds two novel constructs—user–avatar identification and avatar–avatar identification—that play key roles in AMC in addition to the well-known effects of social presence. From a practical perspective, our research helps developers better design online games and virtual worlds such as the metaverse. Collapse

Abstract: Entitlement has been identified as a potentially valuable employee characteristic in the prediction of computer abuse but has not been studied systematically in the IS domain. We introduce the construct of technological entitlement as the persistent sense of being more deserving of technological resources, uses, and privileges compared to other employees. Adapting a model of general entitlement to the work technology context, we theorize that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse and that this relationship is amplified by perceptions of technology restriction. After developing and validating a scale to measure technological entitlement, we conduct three studies with working adult samples to test our hypotheses. In Study 1 (n = 187), using a behavioral design, we find that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse behavior (beyond general entitlement) and that this relationship is stronger when employees perceive organizational restrictions on technology usage. We replicate these findings in Study 2 (n = 339) with an experiment. In Study 3 (n = 156), we manipulate the context of restrictiveness within our experimental vignette to establish the generalizability of our moderator. We discuss how technological entitlement helps explain existing inconsistencies in the effectiveness of deterrence measures as well as other theoretical and practical implications of our work. Abstract: Protecting organizational information assets is an essential objective for most organizations. More than ever, information security relies on insiders with access to information in their work. This research integrates regulatory focus theory with rational choice theory to help shed light on these insiders’ motivations to protect organizational information. The result of these exploratory analyses indicates that promotion and prevention foci each distinctly relate to perceived costs and benefits of protecting organizational information assets. Additionally, the findings show that the overall benefit of protecting mediates an expanded set of costs and benefits. Ultimately, the model explains 57.1% of the variance in insiders’ intentions to protect organizational information assets. Collapse

Abstract: The success and growth of online peer groups has evoked interest in their potential to provide support for their members who share similar challenges. While there is a growing body of knowledge in this field, there is still a lack of understanding social support in online peer groups for career counseling, a prevention for youth unemployment. The unique dataset underlying our explorative study contains messages written by pupils in online peer groups for career counseling at the German Federal Employment Agency. Applying content analysis and logistic regression analysis we analyze which types of social support arise in the online peer groups depending on peers’ characteristics. We show that the online peer groups provide types of social support traditional one-on-one counseling cannot offer. Our analysis indicates that depending on peers’ gender and average school grade, the prevalence of the different types of social support changes. To a smaller extent this is also the case for differences in migration background. Our results contribute to a better understanding of social support in online peer groups for career counseling to address youth unemployment. Collapse

Abstract: Trust plays an essential role in the sharing economy (SE), which has dramatically changed many industries, including tourism, hospitality, and transportation. As interpersonal trust is difficult to develop in the SE, this study focuses on a specific type of institutional trust at the platform level, namely trust in the platform and its role in shaping clients’ continuous use. Drawing on institutional theory, this study examines two constructs, i.e., the perceived effectiveness of the platform-based institutional structure (PEPIS), the perceived effectiveness of the SE institutional mechanisms (PESEIM), and their roles in trust in the platform and continuous use intention. A model is proposed to depict how trust in the platform is formed and operates under the boundary condition of PESEIM. Our findings suggest that PEPIS has a positive impact on trust in the platform, which leads to continuous use intention, and PESEIM negatively moderates the relationship between PEPIS and trust in the platform and the relationship between trust in the platform and continuous use intention. Abstract: Over the last years, crypto-assets have gained significant interest from private investors, academia, and industry. While the user population and their motivations, perceptions, and behaviors have been studied, non-adopters and factors influencing their decision have been left unexplored. This work fills this knowledge gap and sheds light on the effects of trust, perceived self-efficacy, and risk, which have been shown to be the key antecedents to technology acceptance, on the adoption intention of non-users. We propose and empirically test a theoretical model that explains the adoption intention of crypto-assets among those, who decided against using them. The validity of the model is assessed in a structural equation model analysis of 204 non-users. Results revealed that trust is a critical factor affecting adoption intention, with perceived self-efficacy having a mediating effect. Building on the results, practical recommendations are offered that could lower the entry barriers and facilitate the adoption of crypto-assets. Collapse

Abstract: Maintaining professional competency in an environment with rapid technological innovation may seem to be an insurmountable task since new technologies often become obsolete before technology professionals can master them. Although research has established that challenging work assignments affect professional motivation, research has also established that overly challenging work assignments can demotivate people. In particular, research has called for work that examines the relationship between the technical updating climate (TUC) and learning motivation in the professional development activity context. To fill this gap, we collected data from 174 IT professionals who exemplify professionals working in such environments. We found evidence that showed locus of control, self-efficacy, and technical updating climate could predict 43 percent of the variation in the IT professional's motivation to participate in professional development. The research model that we propose demonstrates a strong ability to explain motivation to engage in professional development in technologically intensive work contexts. Furthermore, we successfully operationalized and validated the technical updating climate as both an instance of positive climate and as an organizational climate. P. Schambach is a Professor Emeritus at Illinois State University. His primary teaching areas were database, systems analysis, systems quality assurance, and management information systems. Before entering academic life he worked as a business analyst, consultant, and project manager for Unisys. His research focuses on Information Technology Workforce issues such as professional development, skill needs, professional motivation, student internship outcomes, and the quality/productivity challenges accompanying multi-tasking. He has served as research chair and president for the International Academy for Information Management (IAIM). He has presented and published papers at regional, national and international information systems conferences. Abstract: Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) is an estimator that has found widespread application for causal information systems (IS) research. Recently, the method has been subject to many improvements, such as consistent PLS (PLSc) for latent variable models, a bootstrap-based test for overall model fit, and the heterotrait-to-monotrait ratio of correlations for assessing discriminant validity. Scholars who would like to rigorously apply PLS-PM need updated guidelines for its use.
